Isn't this going to be the song they use in the new Macaulay Culkin movie? I think the movie is called "Incorruptible." I'm almost positive this is the song -- as a matter, I am positive because the producers wanted it to be sung my a contemporary singer but the director insisted that The Critters' version was the one they would use. They haven't even started filming so maybe it's different now.
@ColumbiaPerna Looked up Culkin on IMDB. It says his new movie is in pre-production under the title "Service Man". Where did you read that this song will be used in it? I used to be in a band which did shows with the Critters and I would be real interested if this song (which is, incidentally, great!) is used in a movie. BTW, Don Ciccone (no relation to the other famous Ciccone) who wrote and sings lead on this song is today in a band called The Hitmen, together with Jimmy Ryan, another Critter.
I heard this today on "the True Oldies Channel" and ran right to YouTube - THANK YOU!!! I have the 45 someplace, but no turntable anymore!! What a wonderful, romantic song - I feel 15 again!! Younger Girl is my other favorite of their's
It's interesting I never paid much attention to this song when it came out, but when I saw this posted I listened and found myself crying after lost youth... It is now my most favorite of that time period..something about the harmonies is very haunting ....
Donny Bisogni was a member of this group. He sadly died (no pun intended!) on Sunday in New Jersey. He was also a member of the group The Excellents. They sang Coney Island Baby. Another popular song of his was The Younger Girl.
WOW, I havn't herd this song in years. This one is a particular favorite of mine since I associate it with my first summer romance at the tender age of 15. Man that was some girl, tender song for a tender girl, what memories you just evoked in me, thanks a bunch for posting it.
I ran across a gem of a song from the mid 60's. I had forgotten all about it until I played it, but now recall it as one of my all time favorites.
The chord transistions and harmony are haunting and mesmerizing, and the bass line is simple but captivating. Just go to you tube and search the song title "Mr. Dyingly Sad" by a group called the Critters.
You have no idea how talented these guys were. They were not some make-believe artists created by a studio. They were excellent muscians who were masters at their instruments and who could sing and write great songs. I saw them several times when they used to play at or around Villanova (I think Bob, Jimmy and Don were students there). They would just knock you out with their talent. If it wasn't for the Vietnam War (Don was drafted) the Critters would be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
lahaina 1965-69, hanging out at SunsetFreeze, across from the Banyan Tree. the teens from Lahainaluna High School with the radios playing these beautiful love songs...awesome memeories, the Critters love song harmonies oh yeah
@60otaku3 I remember I had the 45 of the Critters and you jogged my memory. It was younger girl I was thinking about. On my 45 Mr. Diengly side was side B. That song Younger Girl always confused me because the Critters singer sounded exactly like John Sebastin. I always wondered if he didn't do the vocals as the Critters 45 sounded so much like the John Sebastin. I was about 10 at the time and I remember going to the Corondelet(remember this store?) and buying this 45. LP's $3.49, lol.
Yet another awesome ultra-obscure golden oldie from Summer '66, ignored by golden oldies format radio consultants but posted on YouTube! God bless uTube!
I've been listening to pop music for over 50 years, and this song released right before my junior year in high school is about the most beautiful I've ever heard --- I just can't stop listening to it. Everything about this song -- lead, lyrics, melody, bass line, background vocals, etc., are just *stunning*.
This one is on my Favorites 60otaku3 -- you have very good taste in music (since it seems to be MY taste also!). I got an iPod for Christmas, can I download this to it? Someone from work is going to help me as I'm ignorant on how to do it, but I plan on putting the one-hits from my albums on it, too. Might be too challenging for this Boomer babe, but I'm going to try!
@azjans this is quite easy to get it to your ipod simply DL this with free youtube mp3 converter and once downloaded to your HD as mp3, itunes will convert it automatically for your ipod and just synch it.
My Dad loved this, he loved songs that harmonized. I miss you Dad, I wish you could hear this. This is for you, I love you and miss you. I am sad...I know I will see you again.
This song is freakinly fantastic. And so is "Younger Girl" (written by John Sebastian (of the Lovin' Spoonful) Take note all ya "younger generation" of what is not missing in this song and is missing in most songs of the last 15 years .. well everything; I don't have the time to tell.
I think this is one of the most underrated and beautiful love songs. If it hadn't been pretty much a one-hit wonder, it would have been a classic, right up there with anything by the Carpenters or Elvis or the Beatles, which is where this song belongs.
No debate, could be wrong, believe at least one of the Critters was from Long Island or elsewhere. Check other posts of this tune and other hits to verify my "Critters" dance/concert attendance credentials back in the "Children And Flowers" , "Younger Girl" and "Don't Let The Rain Fall Down On Me" days...may well have all been from NJ...not sure... don't you just love Mr. Don's bass styling?...ref: "Come Back When You Grow Up Girl" (Bobby Vee)...Critters forever!...real Jersey Shore!Tunesmith
@lasinlo I do...because those who rate songs, as my late Mom used to say, have their heads "where the monkey put the chestnuts"...this and the Critters' version of "Younger Girl" are number one forever...Tunesmith
@2528doo I agree. To hear this and other 'lost oldies' on the airwaves nowadays, one probably has to subscribe to a satellite music service such as Sirius since mainstream FM oldies stations hardly ever touch 'lost oldies' such as this gem...Thank you YouTubers for uploading this and other 'lost oldies/classics'!
Their music was my time.. a pleasure to listen to any time of the day..would make you stop, sing with the song or simply sit back, relax savor the melody and lyrics.. well being young that time only meant simple pleasures that meant a lot already.
@emerybayblues Lou Christie did record a cover of Mr. Dieingly Sad on his 1999 cd, "Pledging My Love". The tune was written by Critters member Don Ciccone while a university student at Villanova. Later on, he became a member of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons.
I say, that this song was used for a shampoo commercial way back then..it may have been "prell" ..and the girl used for the shampoo may have been one of Charlie Angels gals..can someone tell me if I am right!
Love this Love this .....SO LOOOOOVE THIS ! takes me back to 1966 when The Beatles were still touring, -did ANY of us ever THINK they'd stop?-Beach Boys were having Fun, Fun, Fun and Chicago was 7 or 8 months away from meeting in Walt's apt. and w/a handshake, creating a second dynasty in American Music. @lnefouse Vietnam ruined our generation. Those greedy old bastards in power raided the colleges, farms and factories and sent our best, brightest, bravest and strongest to be destroyed and haunted.
@lnefouse God, Vietnam was terrible wasn't it, I think that the wars are like black holes arround us. I am Mexican I don't know how is a war, but I think it's so sad.
Musician's pop music?? One can trace the structures and chord patterns along with the track. And when did a pop song last feature a key change?? The style only flourished for a brief period. Probably can't ever come back - like trad jazz etc.
@martinjp1958 I often wonder such things. Or a guitar accompanying a vocal like Rainy Night In Georgia. PS: Has anyone else felt the lead singer sounds SO much like Johnny Mathis. Quick vibrato and all?

@lnefouse Vietnam ruined our generation. Those greedy old bastards in power raided the colleges, farms and factories and sent our best, brightest, bravest and strongest to be destroyed and haunted.

@lnefouse Amen, brother. tell me, did the Critters get drafted or did they enlist?
Maybe it made no difference back then. I was seven, anyway...

@lnefouse I didn't know that, but it's not quite clear: did they not come home? God bless you for your Vietnam service.
