The Medal of Honor has been jaded. I am a former Jarhead, myself and due to some terrible nightmares I've looked into the problems we've had. Everyone who wears a uniform knows that the armed forces aren't given as much recognition as they should, what they don't know of it is the severeity. 3,450 Medal of Honor recipients since 1861 (21 twice) and only 10 in the past 40 years. only having the information in the video I can say I was not aware of that fact. however what happened in the video has nothing to do with the hypothetical situation regarding what a Taliban would do with an active grenade.

I don't know how causes people to jump on top of grenades (unless their strength is so depleted that they cannot physically do much else) but throwing it back seems like it would be the best chance of accomplishing two key objectives (surviving and eliminating the enemy)

As for picking up the ordinance and throwing it back. That would be ideal and if the grenade had a longer delay, it would have been possible to do just that. But they were fighting from an elevated position and the travel time ate up most of the delay. Peralta didn't hesitate and sacrificed himself so that his brothers would live.

He got it. Which is surprising because it was potencially politically charged. Part of what is left out of thisis the award took a very long time and the Pentagon sent out a panel of experts. The video leaves out that before SGT Peralta tucked the grenade under him he had been shot up in the face and upper torso and wa sin the line of fire. The Pentagon doughted that with his injuries he would have the motorskills and presence of mind to do what his battle buddies stated.

@wel999999999 The chain of command (US side) ignored all reports that he reached out and pulled the grenade to himself. The mortal wound was caused by a friendly. The Commanding General consulted neurologists who said the act was not likely a consious act. The kicker is, is that any award for heroism requires a concious act so the Navy Cross should not have been awarded using the same logic for not awarding the Medal of Honor. No living MOH recipient would have denied the award.

Sgt. Peralta embodied the fighting spirit of an immigrant in America, only he did it on the battle field defending the freedom of his new nation. He came to the US illegally, a day after receiving he's green card, he enlisted in the USMC. He became a citizen while in uniform and died wearing it, saving the lieves of his men. He truly deserves the Medal of Honor. As a Mexican-American serving my country... I am proud to be an American serving my country in the US NAVY. Honor-Courage-Commitment.
