if they had faced, when rachel was a 3 year old, there would have been no WAY in HELL zenyatta could have beaten rachel, especially with rachel pulling out victories so easily in the oaks and mother goose! and being the 1st to win the woodward, which not even shuvee or ladys secret could win when they tried!
ruffian is the queen of the track! she would beat zenyattas little ass i love rachel but she would of won if raceing her to i think the horse she would have a difficult time with would be the king of the track secretariat! that would be a real race. all these races are pussy races compared to what ruffian and secretariat would do.

Ruffian set new track records in her entire 2 yr old champainge AND set new stakes records in all of her 8 stakes races, she was only ever whipped once, and she always won by over 5 lengths if vasquez wasnt holding her back, or if she was injured

Zenyatta was beaten by a nose... and Blame was not a nobody, he one 5 out of 6 starts this year, and beat a horse that had broken track records! (Quality Road) Blame is a very good horse, he was the second favorite, and if Zenyatta had not been in the race, he was my pick to win. I love both RA and Z, but saying Zenyatta isn't good because of one loss, by a nose, to a great horse? Yeah, no.
@Lauratherider - Zenyatta came to almost a dead stop when the dirt hit her in the face any other horse would never have overcome this and would have finished way back. As for Rachel she is the best 3yo filly I have ever seen at 1 1/8 miles. I don't understand why people who like one don't like them both. They were both great horses that I loved watching.
This RA vs Z debate should have never happened. How could it be called a rivalry if they never met? Shirreffs was correct. We should have celebrated BOTH horses. We had a filly dominating in the East and a big mare undefeated from the West. Instead, we pitted them one vs one. Destroyed the enjoyment out of them both where everybody became a party pooper and we were forced to choose sides. Became one big pissing contest. Our heart was not big enough for both.
After watching her races on youtube it's apparent to me that Zenyatta has an amazing power which she unleashes towards the end of every race and it is absolutely breathtaking! There's no way she could calculate how much time is remaining or know exactly how much energy she has left or when to start her run in order to win. The only answer is that she is so extraordinarily powerful that none of this matters at all. She just pours on so much juice that time literally stands still!!! Sorry RA!

But why a match race? Sure, it would be so exciting if Zenyatta would use all her speed in the last few meters and defeated Rachel..but these races are still very hard. :/ Why not let them race until they meet on the track and after the career breeding a foal? :D Zenyatta II x3

This is a really hard question to answer becuz Rachel Alexandra has been a powerful competitor winning races other fillies can't.....
Zenyatta Is a great horse too she is unbeaten and the jockey mike smith knows how to control Zenyatta.......this horse Zenyatta also has one the Breeder's Cup Classic which was the first filly to win it...
And Rachel Alexandra Also has won many races where fillies have never won it...........good question.......
Both have had 17 races. Rachel has won 12 , #2 four times, #6 once. Zenyatta has won ALL 17. I think a child could understand that Zenyatta is the better horse by just using simple math.
I feel when it come down to it experience should win. Even though horses might be less experience if they can run next to the horse that is more experience it should give them the enough confidence to win
RA and Zenyatta would be a tough race. Zenyatta is the most powerful horse I've ever seen run, ever. She runs with heart, and enough stamia to beat all of the boys, obviously. But RA runs with heart and speed. She can take on the boys too. It's hard to say who would come out on top. It would probably come down to the post position and who had better work outs the past few months. But RA is a year older, meaning she may not have what Zenyatta has anymore.
i think no, simply because match races are too dangerous, theres a reason they stopped holding them. A match race would be too likely to end up like the one that took Ruffian's life.

i'd say rachel alexandra has great acceleration therefore she would be able to hold an early lead but zenyatta is big and powerful and has lots of stamina so if it came down to a battle on the final strech probably zenyatta would win but if zenyatta had to come back from behind than rachel alexandra could accelerate because shes small but very fast and handles corners well and if she was to race in europe against zenyatta than she'd definately win
personally, i like Zenyatta better cause she's like an underdog who manages to keep her pace and beat everyone else. Rachel Alexandra is just a beast and...it's kinda intimidating! both are pretty cool tho
Z is/was a closer-usually closers finish like that by 3 lenghts or even down to a nose. Oh and that was only ONE race she finished by a nose and that was a jockey error. Last, look at Z 17.2 hands!! I have never seen a mare that big in my life.
Tell me why you consider it easier to win by 1 or 2 deep in the stretch than by 20? In numerous races Rachel's races were over by the top of the stretch. Zenyatta's races always had a twinge of doubt. Only until the final strides did she actually put a nose up in front. Rachel was eased at the 16th pole in several races. If Zen is physically more mature does that mean Rachel comes back even better this year? If so Zenyatta will be a fading memory.
If Rachel comes back and has a season where she beats the top males in the country on a regular basis, Wins the classic, and maybe wins a race overseas (Dubai, China, etc.) then She will go down in history as greater than Zenyatta. Right now? It's not even close. Zenyatta is legend, Rachel could become legend.
They're seriously both great in their own ways. Zen's undefeated but only ran the boys once. She dominated the synthetics several times and toys with the other fillies. Rach's by far had the most "historical" counts winning against the boys 3 times and beating one of Ruffian's records. Yea it'll be really hard to choose.
Remember Ruffian? Remember her greatness? Her match race? Do you really want things like that to happen again? A filly loosing its life just for a little entertainment...
@syren345 no it wouldnt have! she hit her shoulder on the gate putting all of her weight on that side! the veternarian that treated her watched the video and said the injury happened when she hit the gate! she never hit her shoulder in any other race!!! she broke clean and with half a stride was in the lead! it was the pressure from the mathc race that confused her!
You are right GBeret83, the only way Zenyatta would lose is if she runs out of distance from starting too late. One she starts lengthening that stride she is going to get you. Rachel could only hope that the finish line is close enough. In a long enough race there is no doubt that Zenyatta would win.
Until Zenyatta won the Breeders Cup Classic, Rachel fan's were always talking about how she would run off from Zenyatta. But after seeing the behemoth mare overcome such a poor start to run down the best male's out there, U.S. and Europe, suddenly that talk has stopped. That's because anyone who know's racing, know's that Zenyatta, on either surface, would run down and go by Rachel just the same as she did in the Classic. Rachel thought holding off Macho Again was tough. Zenyatta is far tougher.
If zenyatta does her customery 26 and change 1st qtr Rachel is ahead by 15. A similar 2nd qtr puts her 20 or more off. There wouldn't be tiring horses going 6F at 1:11 but a horse just gearing up at 1:09. Look at the Mother Goose and The Haskell. How could Zen possibly make up all that ground in a qtr mile? You're just dreaming.

I think Zenyatta would win in a race this year but she is in her prime...Rachel might be better if she's still racing in the next 2 years. I think this year HOTY should go to Zenyatta cause of the field she beat coming from last play, but they can't go wrong either way.
Well...Zenyatta won older female horse of the year last year. Rachel Won nothing. rachel competed in 8 different races at 8 diff tracks against males her age and older. she embarressed the kentucky oaks feild and the mother goose feild. i love zenyatta too and i am happy for her record (14-0) (RA 8-0), but i think rachel has worked the hardest this year to get HOTY. what do you think?
Its so hard to choose. Rachel has accomplished more, but Zenyatta is undefeated. Rachel has showed she can crush any feild, but we will never know how fast Zenyatta can actually go. Rachel is older, so its hard to compare directly. ITS SO DIFFICULT!! Im just happy that this year, two fillies sit on top of the colts =] Their both amazing horses that each deserve to be honored. I would like to see Zenyatta in some bigger male races though, and hopefully if she races next year to face off agains RA

I don't see why not. it's last chance ever because Zenyatta is retiring. this opportunity will not come again and people will keep wondering. next year Zenyatta will be too old to make it a fair race. they're both great. only way to decide fairly is to have a race. RA people are actually afraid because they think their horse already deserve the crown.
Rachel would beat Zenny in a match race at a mile and an eighth and a mile and a quarter on a track that she likes such as Oaklawn, Chruchill Downs, Monmouth, or Belmont. Rachel doesn't race other horses over those surfaces, she races the clock. She would also beat Zenny at a mile and eighth on some of the synthetic surfaces. But because synthetic surfaces and Saratoga favor closers, Zenny would beat Rachel at a mile and a quarter on those. Rachel doesn't like those surfaces.
Will it ever happen? You couldn't blame Zenyatta's connections for retiring her, after the way she stomped the best males the year could had to offer in the Breeder's Cup Classic. After all, she's the most successful filly thats come along in several years, and at age 5, she's got nothing left to prove. The smart thing, is to retire her to stud, and not look back.
A match race between the two would be kind of stupid. I don't know much about horse racing admittedly but RA is a pace runner Zen is a closer. Put them in regular race. It is truly too bad RA won't be at the Breeders Cup.

I have been checking Times and watching film and both these great horses are breathtaking to watch. Who would win, well Zen is older, bigger and more mature, also more rested, so for all intensive purposes she should beat RA, would she --- who knows.

Although Rachel is unstoppable we are hopping for Zenyatta and Mike's win this time! Mike has a lot of charisma and a burning winning desire, so we think this will be the deciding factor.
According to the NTRA news letter the NYRA is trying to set up a race between them in the Beldame at Belmont on Oct. 3rd. They have a sponsor who is sweetening the pot to a million. Both connections are reportedly considering it with excitement. I LOVE both of these great horses but ZENYATTA will beat Rachael!
btw, Even though RA is my favorite, I think Zenyatta is AWESOME! I wish her owners would have campaigned her differently, ran her on a more variety of tracks and against the boys. That would bring her more in the public eye and give her more of a chance winning the Horse of the Year.

Right now when you read about the odds for Horse of the Year, RA is far ahead of Z in the polls. It would hurt Z's chances a lot more not to run with RA. Z could go another undefeated year without getting Horse of the Year because of this, unless the Mosses do something soon. The breeder's cup would propel her to Horse of the Year, ONLY if she ran against the boys, because of the way things are going.
Great vid Laura. This controversy is great for horse racing and If RA and Z never meet it will be argued who was better by racing fans for decades. Of course it's a little early in the year for a 3yo to be trying older horses. Even the mighty Secretariat didn't face older horses until August and then he got beat. Later this year Z will be pointing for the Breeders Cup and RA won't go there. Maybe after the BC RA and Z will meet. Let's hope so as it would be a great race.

We had a filly dominating in the East and a big mare undefeated from the West. Instead, we pitted them one vs one. Destroyed the enjoyment out of them both where everybody became a party pooper and we were forced to choose sides. Became one big pissing contest. Our heart was not big enough for both.

After watching her races on youtube it's apparent to me that Zenyatta has an amazing power which she unleashes towards the end of every race and it is absolutely breathtaking! There's no way she could calculate how much time is remaining or know exactly how much energy she has left or when to start her run in order to win. The only answer is that she is so extraordinarily powerful that none of this matters at all. She just pours on so much juice that time literally stands still!!! Sorry RA!

Zenyatta Is a great horse too she is unbeaten and the jockey mike smith knows how to control Zenyatta.......this horse Zenyatta also has one the Breeder's Cup Classic which was the first filly to win it...

Both have had 17 races. Rachel has won 12 , #2 four times, #6 once. Zenyatta has won ALL 17. I think a child could understand that Zenyatta is the better horse by just using simple math.

RA and Zenyatta would be a tough race. Zenyatta is the most powerful horse I've ever seen run, ever. She runs with heart, and enough stamia to beat all of the boys, obviously. But RA runs with heart and speed. She can take on the boys too. It's hard to say who would come out on top. It would probably come down to the post position and who had better work outs the past few months. But RA is a year older, meaning she may not have what Zenyatta has anymore.

i'd say rachel alexandra has great acceleration therefore she would be able to hold an early lead but zenyatta is big and powerful and has lots of stamina so if it came down to a battle on the final strech probably zenyatta would win but if zenyatta had to come back from behind than rachel alexandra could accelerate because shes small but very fast and handles corners well and if she was to race in europe against zenyatta than she'd definately win

Z is/was a closer-usually closers finish like that by 3 lenghts or even down to a nose. Oh and that was only ONE race she finished by a nose and that was a jockey error. Last, look at Z 17.2 hands!! I have never seen a mare that big in my life.

Tell me why you consider it easier to win by 1 or 2 deep in the stretch than by 20? In numerous races Rachel's races were over by the top of the stretch. Zenyatta's races always had a twinge of doubt. Only until the final strides did she actually put a nose up in front. Rachel was eased at the 16th pole in several races. If Zen is physically more mature does that mean Rachel comes back even better this year? If so Zenyatta will be a fading memory.

If Rachel comes back and has a season where she beats the top males in the country on a regular basis, Wins the classic, and maybe wins a race overseas (Dubai, China, etc.) then She will go down in history as greater than Zenyatta. They're seriously both great in their own ways. Zen's undefeated but only ran the boys once. She dominated the synthetics several times and toys with the other fillies. Rach's by far had the most "historical" counts winning against the boys 3 times and beating one of Ruffian's records. Yea it'll be really hard to choose.

You are right GBeret83, the only way Zenyatta would lose is if she runs out of distance from starting too late. One she starts lengthening that stride she is going to get you. Rachel could only hope that the finish line is close enough. In a long enough race there is no doubt that Zenyatta would win.

Until Zenyatta won the Breeders Cup Classic, Rachel fan's were always talking about how she would run off from Zenyatta. But after seeing the behemoth mare overcome such a poor start to run down the best male's out there, U.S. and Europe, suddenly that talk has stopped. That's because anyone who know's racing, know's that Zenyatta, on either surface, would run down and go by Rachel just the same as she did in the Classic. Rachel thought holding off Macho Again was tough. Zenyatta is far tougher.

If zenyatta does her customery 26 and change 1st qtr Rachel is ahead by 15. A similar 2nd qtr puts her 20 or more off. There wouldn't be tiring horses going 6F at 1:11 but a horse just gearing up at 1:09. Look at the Mother Goose and The Haskell. How could Zen possibly make up all that ground in a qtr mile? You're just dreaming.

Well...Zenyatta won older female horse of the year last year. Rachel Won nothing. rachel competed in 8 different races at 8 diff tracks against males her age and older. she embarressed the kentucky oaks feild and the mother goose feild. i love zenyatta too and i am happy for her record (14-0) (RA 8-0), but i think rachel has worked the hardest this year to get HOTY. what do you think?

Its so hard to choose. Rachel has accomplished more, but Zenyatta is undefeated. Rachel has showed she can crush any feild, but we will never know how fast Zenyatta can actually go. Rachel is older, so its hard to compare directly. ITS SO DIFFICULT!! Im just happy that this year, two fillies sit on top of the colts =] Their both amazing horses that each deserve to be honored. I would like to see Zenyatta in some bigger male races though, and hopefully if she races next year to face off agains RA

Rachel would beat Zenny in a match race at a mile and an eighth and a mile and a quarter on a track that she likes such as Oaklawn, Chruchill Downs, Monmouth, or Belmont. Rachel doesn't race other horses over those surfaces, she races the clock. She would also beat Zenny at a mile and eighth on some of the synthetic surfaces. But because synthetic surfaces and Saratoga favor closers, Zenny would beat Rachel at a mile and a quarter on those. Rachel doesn't like those surfaces.

Will it ever happen? You couldn't blame Zenyatta's connections for retiring her, after the way she stomped the best males the year could had to offer in the Breeder's Cup Classic. After all, she's the most successful filly thats come along in several years, and at age 5, she's got nothing left to prove. The smart thing, is to retire her to stud, and not look back.

According to the NTRA news letter the NYRA is trying to set up a race between them in the Beldame at Belmont on Oct. 3rd. They have a sponsor who is sweetening the pot to a million. Both connections are reportedly considering it with excitement. I LOVE both of these great horses but ZENYATTA will beat Rachael!

Right now when you read about the odds for Horse of the Year, RA is far ahead of Z in the polls. It would hurt Z's chances a lot more not to run with RA. Z could go another undefeated year without getting Horse of the Year because of this, unless the Mosses do something soon. Great vid Laura. This controversy is great for horse racing and If RA and Z never meet it will be argued who was better by racing fans for decades. Of course it's a little early in the year for a 3yo to be trying older horses. Even the mighty Secretariat didn't face older horses until August and then he got beat. Later this year Z will be pointing for the Breeders Cup and RA won't go there. Maybe after the BC RA and Z will meet. Let's hope so as it would be a great race.
