  • i live in the new york area as well and i was wondering if buying live rock at manhattan aquariums is better than ordering online

  • @thesupercoolbean1 I would order it online for sure. Try liveaquaria!

  • @newyorksteelo what kind should i get from liveaquaria. Standard Fiji? Premium?

  • @thesupercoolbean1 Premium is always best :)

  • Hey Steelo! Hey I hear people mention pH and Alkalinity! Isn't alkalinity the pH below 7 and a base when the pH is above 7. I hear people refer to these as two different things and this is confusing for me! To help answer the question isn't the alkalinity the 'low' pH? Please help me sort out this confusion? Thanks in advance!

  • @Sisco296 Please visit my video titled "Reef Aquarium Calcium & Alkalinity - How It Works" to find the answers you seek.

  • Did anyone see the alien looking face in the box he opened? Look at the brown paper/ or rock, which ever that was. There is a mouth, tongue, nostrils, and eyes.

  • @one234569and10 Yeah, I saw it and someone else pointed it out to me. It looks like a face from the planet of the apes or something lol.

  • Where did yo buy your rock?

  • @ICEMAN330824 Got it locally but you can research this rock online and I am sure you will find it :)

  • I agree with you about it being low to create current...David from Trigger Systems was saying it'd be fine if its 2-3" under the water, but I want it like urs...sorry 2 copy u, its just that u do things the best way lol...

  • @Springs24 :)

  • Do u remember how long u cut ur 1" pvc? Maybe 12"?

Did u leave 3" of space between bottom of sump and pvc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • @Springs24 I do not recall exactly but I wanted it to be low so as to keep that are clean and free of detritus and debris.

  • I got through Day 11 of your videos and one thing concerns me as a future hobbyist: how do you ensure that any type of flooding, due to mechanical breakdown or other, never occurs?

This is one thing which really concerns me. Is it 100% preventable?

  • @cuz71 A good question indeed. The one thing to keep in mind here though is that this has been thought of and fixed so as to not be a concern. Lets say there was a power loss to the hole system. The built in overflow box will retain the water in the tank and only allow a few gallons to drain before the water drops below the teeth gaps that drain. Now, considering some gallons will come down, I have a sump that is 16" tall, yet only contains a 10" water height. An overflow can never happen buddy.

  • @cuz71 Also, you may want to visit my detailed review on this tank and stand which cover exactly how they work. These videos are under the reviews play list, or you can browse the videos on the channel to find them. Hope this helps you understand this better. Good luck.

  • how much was the live rock

  • @WickedReviews707 I got it really cheap (wholesale) mostly because I got it locally from a person that owed me a huge favor. You can research the price online as their are quite a number of websites that carry this rock. I highly recommend liveaquaria for live rock. Good luck.

  • Im just getting in to reef keeping and your videos have been really helpful. I have a 90 gal tank as well. and i was wondering how essential the live sand is because I'm already in the hole with the start up of this tank. Would it be okay if i just use the fine grain playground sand I used in my freshwater tank. Of course along with the fiji live rock i got.

  • @boredouttahell Playground sand is ful of silicates and will result in a never ending battle with nuisance algae so i would recommend you stick to real live sand, or dry crushed coral made of aragonite.

  • @newyorksteelo ok thanks for the advice, ill probably just let the tank cycle on with just the live rock for and order some live sand later on. Do you have any recommendations for a good cost effective live sand?

  • @boredouttahell You will find the answers you seek if you scroll through my video lists and check the tittles.

  • Comment removed

  • @newyorksteelo lol...thats awesome...i went to a lfs on northern blvd today...are you familiar?

  • @brinks128 Fishtown USA? Yes, a cool shop indeed and the customer service is great :)

  • @newyorksteelo yeap...i was there for two hours....:)

  • do you have a valve between the skimmer and the mag 18?

  • @brinks128 NO.Nothing but the tubing in there.

  • @newyorksteelo okay i just recieved my aquac 240 today....

  • @brinks128 Nice :)

  • Where did the live rock come from? And also do you need alot of light in a refugium? Awesome video!

  • @Thehumancat1 I got it off a local retailer that owed me a favor and got it for wholesale, but quite a few places sell this rock online. As for the refugium and lighting, the more the light, the better your macro algae will grow :)

  • did you cure the rock or was it pre-cured?

  • @RyanXyz007 Watch my video called "How To Cycle A Reef Aquarium" to find the answers you seek. You are almost there as this video i believe is next and covers the information you are looking for.

  • @newyorksteelo Thanx

  • @RyanXyz007 Anytime!

  • and what kind did you get

  • did you get all your rock from liveaquaria.

  • @basstracker06 I got it locally from a lfs that ordered it for me for wholesale. First I had Fiji and Branch Rock for years, bit I have also had Caribbean, Tonga, Dry rock and so on. I like to mix it up which is why I have so much life in my tanks. Over the years, I sold off mostly all but always keep a few to seed my next systems. Liveaquaria sells good rock if you ask for the most colorful rocks. If they don't have it, they will order it for you and it's way cheaper than getting it locally.

  • Just subscribed to your channel. Awesome video! Can't wait to watch the rest of them.

  • @azflying Thanks :) Enjoy!

  • Hi newyorksteelo while the tank is cycling wont the worms and coral die before the process is over?

meaning that all the hitchhikers wont stay alive long enough to stay in your tank and be part of your aquarium?

  • @Domonic233 The majority of the critters survive the cycle process so there is no need to worry about this. I would run the filtration system since day to help the cycle go faster and prevent further die off. Good luck.

  • @newyorksteelo thanks alot

  • @Domonic233 Anytime.

  • @SaltFishKid Both are good but Manado live rock is more porous and lightweight, while Fiji can sometimes be more dense and boulder like. Check out my video on how to aquascape a reef aquarium for more info and to see this rock aquascaped.

  • Hi Matey,

Do you use normal tab water for filling the tank?

  • @amakram12 No way. Absolutely not. Tap water and marine aquariums are like oil and water, they just don't mix well together. I cover this on one of my RO/DI unit videos in detail. Good luck.

  • Whats up youtube, thanks steelo for the reply, I sent him a message hopefully he will give me some helpful info. I also bought a ex-120. lol I know I know, But I am returning it for the c-skim 1800. Once again thanks steelo, I was thinking about making some videos, just to show u guys what u have helped me with. I am trying to figure out to set up my skimmer and reactor(MR1 REACTOR) In my model 2 sump refugium. might break the cover to put it in the first chamber an not the last with the return.

  • @shadow10462 The EV120 with mag drive 7 is an absolute way better skimmer than the C-skim1800. Way better.

  • Just bought a c-skim 1800, cant wait lol.

  • @shadow10462 There is another YouTuber, one of my subscribers who had this skimmer and upgraded to a Deltec. Talk to him before before you buy this skimmer. His YouTube ID is dm002a8686.

  • I'm really happy that I found your channel, thanks for your in-depth information.

I hope that you have more to offer and I can learn from your experience.

    I am starting a 10g, building a stand for a 90g and erecting a 400g custom tank.

Perhaps you can be my new best friend :)

  • @TheJaxxxon Many more videos to come. Thanks for the comment and subscription :) Good luck with the new builds.

  • Awesome!! Video, I will continue to watch ever one of video and learn how to set one soon.. I was thinking of going fake but now I see, NO WAY I will do that. Again thank u.

  • @SupraPorsche1 Your welcome. I have a new video just released today. Thanks for supporting my channel.

  • Thanks for answering!

I been searching all over in YouTube about SW info, but only u provide me with all info I need.

    Very informative and interesting.

Please don't stop and do what u doing, show people ur experience.

Again thanks and keep going on this way!)

  • @almazeus88 I will continue to do so. Thanks for the support.

  • Im Sure You Answered This B4 But Im Not Sure Where I Read Or Heard It But Did You Get Cured Or Uncured Live Rock

  • @IMTHEMANWA3 Uncured live rock.

  • I really need to understand where the protien skimmer's input and output is. Where it collects the water (which chamber) and it discharges it.

    Thank you.

  • @300pzl Everything is done in the first stage. The pump for the skimmer is located beside the skimmer and the output is behind the skimmer facing the back of the sump. Its all done in the sand chamber.

  • You know what bro? I've been reeffing for 2 years now and your videos still envy me. Infact i'm really impress with the time and effort you put in to help out all of the reeffers all over the state. The reason i said this because i live in nebraska, you probably never heard of it and with the slow a** compt, i'm still watching your videos faithfully. Don't laugh but i let the video load while i go clean the tank or something then come back to watch it.

  • @73reddragon haaaa lol, awesome man. Glad to hear that you support my channel and watch my videos even with slow internet. Thank you for your efforts. Your comments make it that much pleasing for me to keep doing what I am doing :)

  • Hey ny did you wash the rock or.scrub It before you put it in the tank?

  • @cbr900rr No way. This is done when you cure live rock on a separate vessel and prepare it for an established system, where you do not want decaying matter on the rock to go into the system. In this case, I want there to be die off on the rock itself so that it can help cycle my tank via decomposition.

  • Very nice bro.....congrats on the two thousand subs....goes to show you that you are putting out great information that many of us appreciate....

  • @gmoney1961 Thanks man. I owe it all to you guys.

  • hay there will you be using eco system miracle mud again and if not y?

    cheers mate daz..

  • @killadaza Absolutely. A new video is available for you to watch where I cover this.

  • @newyorksteelo cheers mate look forward to it.

  • I just bought a rodi unit hooked it up and came to notice my water pressure is 30psi. I need a booster pump and that's an extra100 bucks. Lol. Do u know if all faucets in ur house have the same water pressure? This stinks. To say the least.

  • @javier91782 Welcome to the hobby lol. This hobby can be expensive for sure :) In my house, I get 55 psi on all faucets but I still got the booster pump so that I can boost it to 80 psi. Oh and the booster pump is a lot more expensive than $100 bucks. Good luck.

  • thanks man, you really do make this hobby easier for the people who watch your videos. I cant wait for the next up date!

  • @TheFishguy91 Your welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • dose a saltwater tank normaly get a lot of alge when it is cycling

  • @TheFishguy91 Yes. This is known as new tank syndrome. will be releasing a full detailed video on the cycle process and showing you guys how unsightly the tank looks during the cycle.

  • When is the next video going to be up? Im excited for the video lol

  • @90si Very soon. The next video is going to be on the cycle process, then 2 videos on live sand, then live rock vs dry rock, then how to set up a refugium, then adding more live rock from other parts of the world, then the clean up crew, then how to stock a marine aquarium, then updates, and the list goes on and on man. Many more videos to come.

  • @newyorksteelo

I am really looking forward to the video, I have been checking your channel for updates everyday haha :)

  • @90si Thanks for visiting my channel daily :)

  • I can't wait to see the aquascape. Those rocks are awesome and so huge!!!

  • @bmwyou They are also lightweight and very porous which is what you should look for in live rock. The more the rock is boulder like, the less effective it will be for your system. Surface area is everything when it comes to live rock. An up coming video review will be made on live rock vs dry rock, side by side comparison out of the tank and will be discussed in detail. Lots of differences unknown to many hobbyists out there between live and dry rock.

  • also meaning more electricity is waisted...

  • @pbmaniac2009 Yes, that is the downfall here. More electricity but to me, my system is worth more than a few bucks in electricity and these skimmers do pull in way more air than your standard needle wheel skimmers. I mean just study the design of it and you will see what I mean. This skimmer has an air valve for a reason, to be able to dial down the air intake. 90% of all skimmers do not have this feature. Skimmers utilize flow to pull in air, that is just the way it works MR.

  • I totally see the montipora it's so tiny but so rich in color. That is awesome that it came on the rock. That is going to turn into a beautiful showpiece.

  • @bmwyou Glad you can see it. I really wanted to show you guys that live rock has so much potential and for you to be able to see the monti is pleasing to hear. Thanks.

  • Dude 1080p is awesome!!!!! Nice rocks!!

  • @bmwyou Good to hear. i work hard and render the videos for hours just to give you guys 1080p. Thanks again.

  • im starting a new system. almost done witht the plumbing. getting to the sand and rock part. im going with a deep sand bed. im thinking of buying un-curred rock. i would love to see your up comming video on live rock. cant wait!

  • @Kawwwman Many more videos to come in the next few days :) Thanks for the comment.

  • Steelo Great couple of new videos. Finally a week without snow! Today I finished painting my 2nd stand. This piece is going to extend the base of my DT stand, to allow my custom 36" refugium to fit. Im in the processes of giving the whole unit a clean look, its alot of work but its very relaxing. I found my "Happy Place".

  • @bksdiesel76 Nice! Keep me updated.

  • even if your skimmer is running a mag pump, there is no way there is 1.8k gph through the skimmer, since the water is being forced downwards there is alot of head loss and the amount of tubing being used. also the aqua c skimmers dont have a efficient design. other skimmers can pull more air then your aqua c 180.

  • @pbmaniac2009 That is not true my friend. What is true is that you are right in that its not the total 1800 gph because all skimmers lose head pressure, but the fact of the matter is that it is an 1800 gph pump and the ingenious design of using that much pressure pulls in more air than any other skimmer. It is way more efficient and a newer technology than even needle wheel skimmers. The spray injection design is awesome buddy. But hey the proof is in the pudding on my review videos :)

  • @pbmaniac2009 Oh and after I put this skimer on blast with my reviews, there are so many of my subs that have got it and not one person has complained. all it has recieved is appraisal. I have fiddled with so many skimmers in my life time that even with this experience I still got the EV240 instead of a cone skimmer. This is also why I recommend people to run the EV180 with a mag drive 9.5 instead of a mag 7. Cause the more the power, the more the air, meaning you have to dial the air down a bit

  • Another great video! I had a bunch of questions but by time I read through all the comments everything was answered. LOL. Can't wait to see the aquascape.

  • @bilbobag111 Haaaa lol, thats a good thing for me cause you saved me all the answering :) Thanks man.

  • ha ha, jim carrey moment-ace ventura pet detective "hds comin through! I've got a package people!"

  • @mindciller Haaaaaaa.

  • hey do you know of an online website that sells live rock like the quality that live aquaria sells but in less quantities?

  • @360treflipskater360 None that I know of. Sorry.

  • @newyorksteelo blahh its okay i just wanted to get all different kinds of live rock and i dont need like 30 pounds of each type. ill check and see if theres a LFS around here that could order some different types for me. but thanks anyways. and the rest of my equipment arrived today but i cant make a video until i finish my history project :(

  • hey for a standard 90 gallon system how many pounds of sand would you need for a 2inch bed.

  • @maxx56dog Go to google and type deep sand bed calculator and you shall find the answers you seek.

  • 1103jester , hello steelo buddy this guy on YouTube as used bleach and killed must of his tank, I told him to get new sand and rock and clean tank out so you can't smell bleach any more. Can you take a look at his video and advice him please, think he is going to pack his tank up.

  • I fully agree. Cycle the tank without fish.

  • @sprinter144 :)

  • Are those filter socks 100 or 200 micron ? If they are 100, you should consider switching to 200. They don't clog nearly as fast. I love the socks on my tank becuz it keeps the water very clean and polished. Good move with the carpet in the stand...reminds me of something someone else did with towels!!! Just kidding man, keep up the good work homie!

  • @moneymarkj These are 200 micron. I have since added live rock to the first stage and removed the socks. Aldo added the deep sand bed to the refugium area and some chaeto. A new video should be up within the next few days :)

  • Wow, that is some beautiful rock there. Great vid. Yes, you are doing a good thing by sharing your experience with us. I am learning from you rather then 100 other peeps on here. I haven't started my marine tank yet but I will soon and I will not be cheap on anything. As a matter of fact I am working on ordering my tank from a builder in Miami, only a 45g but that is all I can cope with now in a NY flat. I like how you section off your vids so that the person that is viewing it can understand.

  • @manamal1 Great comment and I am glad that you are going to treat your system like if it were your son or daughter lol, and not going cheap with it. If you do as you say you will do, I guarantee you will not only be happy, but successful :) Glad to hear you like the way I section the videos as well. Thanks.

  • nice dude!, gitting really close for my 90 gallon set up

  • @CI321 Thank you :)

  • love it mann!! looking awesome!! u must be rich to have all that equipment!!....u said u were excited in the vid!! IM EXCITED TOO....i started my tank already im just saving up for a ro/di system!!

  • @shakez1 I am not rich. Far from it. I just made some money from selling the live rock and fish in the 90g system before the break down. With this money, i bought the new stand and sump. Plus I work for a living. man, it is safe to say that i am broke every time i buy some new equipment. I only wish i had the money to buy more equipment for more video reviews. Work hard and go to school to make something of yourself and you should be able to buy anything you want with some patience.

  • @newyorksteelo thanks man..im actually a BROKE nurse by the way. if u ever heard of a LVN OR LPN thats what i do.i feel u man we all work hard for our money! i did some research on ur equipment and man they cost money and i was blown away bcuz im planning to spend 2000 on my system but after doing research im going to be spending more to build a really good tank.i take ur advice when u said"you get what you pay for!" haha best line..if u dont u will regret later!!

  • @shakez1 Yeah, a LPN is a Licence Practical Nurse, I used to work in a nursing home years back so I know a little about the tittles. Yes, my set up is expensive but you can be sure of one thing here, if you take the time and dedicate yourself to your system, it will show. Not many 90g system look close to this one. This is a one of a kind system and when I am done with it, my hard work is definitely going to show in the system.

  • I'm looking for about 100 lbs. of live rock. Everywhere I look online it is ridiculously expensive. Anyone know where I could find 100 lbs of live rock for $250 or less including shipping?

  • @ObviouslyAwsome Nowhere, you might find it for about 4.00 + dollars a pound, including shipping in liveaquaria. Live rock is expensive my friend and it cost so much to have it collected from the ocean and delivered to you. At least you can find it that cheap online cause in local fish stores, it can be 8 to 10 dollars a pounds.

  • Another high quality video, very detailed! Again I wish I could have seen this vid before I got some deco live -rock it was full of everything 3 days and it is almost naked now. Got squirted in face with claim that has since expired found about 20 or thirty crabs and shrimp dead in bottom of container did 2 100 percent water changes now will do 80-60 percent! I will follow your lead from now on waiting for next video you upload! Thanks for all your hard work ,I for sure really appreciate it!

  • @supermidwestG Thanks for the words of encouragement and for watching my videos :)

  • Good looking rock man, can't wait to see some aquascaping! How much watts that Fuge light has? Great vid as always :)

  • @sputnik790 I mentioned the price of the fuge light in my "Reef Aquarium Setup Day 10" video. Its a 25 watt unit and I will buy another one for the fuge this week. Thanks :)

  • @newyorksteelo Thank's Steel, btw you never mentioned the price of the fuge light in your "Reef Aquarium Setup Day 10" video!

  • @sputnik790 Really, Oh it was in the video before this one. I showed both the box of the fan and the box for the light and mentioned I payed about 50 bucks for the light. Actually, it was more like 45 though.

  • good info, ive learned a few good things from you. i have 34 nano check it out on youtube.

  • @my1941willys I will check it out when I get a chance and leave a comment if need be.

  • I love your videos, You learn so much stuff, my local store didn't learn you out just wanted your money.

  • @dm002a8686 Good to hear. Thanks for the comment and support.

  • Nice!

  • @tyte90 :)

  • Nice to see update so quick from last one lol

Nice rock my friend, are you putting more in ,great update by the way , when the sand coming ???

  • @dm002a8686 Sometime this upcoming week. I will do a full review of the sand I use, why i use it, and another video on how to add live sand to marine aquariums. Stay tuned.

  • nice bro just finsh my 40gal build so go take a look

  • @mrfishguy25 I will take a peek when I get home tonight and leave a comment if need be.

  • my uncle has martial island live rock because hes had his tank for about 20 years

  • @vanhalenman60 Marshall Island is the best rock you can get in this hobby. Lucky him ;)

  • how mutch was the rock

  • @vanhalenman60 Seek and you shall find.

  • your welcome

  • @ReefAdvicer :)

  • great vid

  • @triplesped Thank you.

  • i will make a vid showing the diference

  • @31668999 I have been in this hobby to long to know where to get good quality live rock my friend. Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • how much a kg for your live rock? some retailers actually get normal half dead LR and grow corrraline algae on it and sell it as top dollar premium LR. i get my Premium stuff for 12 bucks a kg, be verry carefull, people can mislead you into buying the wrong stuff.. tanks looking good bro

  • @31668999 I have no idea in kg. The rock you are referring to is aquacultured live rock and not the same, or cured live rock which has been collected and cured for a long time in their tanks. All live rock when you get it into your system, most of the coraline dies off and then regrows again. I barely paid for this rock cause i got it through a retailer in Yonkers who owes me :)

  • @newyorksteelo u got that right brotha! All I could ever find was videos that said, "DIY sump" and all the whole video was them showing the sump..not explaining anything lol not even saying a word. and with that said I sure hope u keep u the great work because it is very appreciated.

  • @blaynor6 Will do for sure. thanks again for supporting my channel :)

  • Luckily someone else got me into this hobby, so I had a great base of knowledge when I started. But I would say now I know more then my buddy lol. I would say 90% of what I have learned was from this channel :) and limpitsreef. Been a Sub since just before the "stuff in the closet " give away lol

  • @blaynor6 Thanks. lf I had someone like me, making educational videos back when I fist got into the hobby, I would not have spend thousands in useless equipment, and not have made the mistakes I did when I first started out. This is why i began making educational videos. I was looking through YouTube last year and just did not find detailed explanations on this hobby. One thing lead to another and here we are today :) Honestly, i would consider the information found in these videos invaluable.

  • @newyorksteelo sorry i forgot, i have now lol :D

  • @FishFeedingFrenzy Cool, thanks :)

  • @vipete1985 haha for real that's to funny!

  • @blaynor6 It truly is funny lol. Rather be a reef junkie than a drug junkie lol.

  • Definitely agreee on that and I learned the hard way with the patience thing.... Hey you no we are all some reef junkies it's 5 am eastern time n we r on here talking live rock and reefing, glad to know I'm not the only one who goes to sleep thinking about my tank n wakes up ready to look at it n make sure everythings proper....some nights I spend at home with my tank while my friends r out hahaha...call it what u want but that what I rather do

  • @vipete1985 I am actually up and getting ready for work lol. I woke up today and had 125 messages. Geez. Anyways yeah, this hobby will force patience upon you. No doubt about it. I had to learn it to hard way too lol. Man, my first 45g tank, wow. You brought back memories here. I impulsively bought all the wrong equipment and wrong sand and stuff, only to spend double trying to get it right haaaa lol.

  • Oops forgot to ask my question, why only 40lbs? I thought the general rule was a pound per gallon? Overkill on Skimmer make the difference?

  • @blaynor6 Because I am patient and plan ahead, which is what I am trying to teach everyone on here. This is not the only rock type going on this system. Another 50 pounds will be added from different parts of the world to obtain a high bio diversity in marine micro and macro fauna. The only way to achieve this is by getting some fiji rock and maybe some Tonga rock or Caribbean rock next. Aside from this, there will be like 30 pounds of dry marco rock added to the first stage of the sump :)

  • I"ll say with confidence that manado live rock is the best Rock u can get right now....steelo u don't play around u really only buy the best stuff hahaaha... Can't wait to see what critters and goodies come outta there

  • @vipete1985 I want my tank to be up there with some of the best 90g tanks on here. I am constantly in and out of YouTube and have seen almost everyones systems. I absolutely want the very best and to achieve this, lots of research must be done before buying, and lots of patience. My best advice to all would be stay away from the local fish stores, buy online, and have lots of patience. Patience will lead you int he right direction and prevent impulsive buying and mistakes.

  • Looking good bro! Its fuuny to hear someone else excited about there live rock like I was, my wife and kids made jokes about me just sitting there looking at "just rock's" when I first set my tank. But after I showed them the life within it, they can't get enough lol

  • @blaynor6 ha ha lol, I know the feeling. Even my girl be like wowwwwww lol. This is the very thing the differentiates freshwater from saltwater. In freshwater rock or in nature, such biodiversity in critters in non existent. Marine aquariums rule for this very reason :)

  • I love your videos steelo! I agree on the video regarding marine aquarium cycling, would be very informative. I should have my 75g tank up and running soon! :)

  • @90si Thanks. That video should be up soon. I am going to wait till the tank looks horrible with diatoms to make this video so people can know what to expect and understand the cycle process.

  • How much did you spend on the Live rock?

  • @7051kevin Seek and you shall find :) I did not pay much for this rock cause I got it off a local retailer that ordered it for me, but prices vary depending on where you get it. More live rock will be added from different parts of the world. Thanks for watching :)
