Can you explain the points at 0:57 and 1:38? In the first one, it looks as if Lopez has the attack because Pozdniakov took a retreat before his attack yet he was given priority. Same thing for the second one except it looked as if Pozdniakov had the attack (this one was difficult because the camera angle cut in mid point).
@kevinthemathgeek these days that is how it would be called, however at that time directors we very harsh with the "attack no" call in the first zone. both of those attacks were called attack misses, counterattack is good
@hello123459546 one question I take fencing but I am a newbie and I only know the names of the swords in spanish which is: el florete el sable y la espada. But I don't know which is which in english I was wondering if you could clear that up for me or someone else could.
so...who won?? i stumbled upon this video and i know a wee bit on fencing, but i wasnt so sure if they were even hitting each other or what was going on.
personally i gotta say i can see where hotelroomsmoker is coming from because in full speed its almost too fast for anyone who doesn't know what they're looking at to realize how complex fencing is. @hotelroomsmoker once you slow it down, like in the slowmo here, you'll notice how deliberate EVERY SINGLE action is
sorry im not buying it. i watched the old olympic fencing videos circa 1940. Talk about talent skill...not cheap shots. PS I am NOT a fencing expert, but I am an amateur fencer and I personally would enjoy to see the "best" fencers in the world show off some swordplay and not just go for the quick point. It's like fencing sabre and getting all your points on "hand hits". Laaaammmmmmeeeeee
@avidOlympicsWatcher I honestly don't care about popular opinion. I watch a guy run and jump just looking to barely tag his opponent for a point and I call it dishonorable and childish. KThxBai
@hotelroomsmoker a lot of people say that because they cant see that there is actually a lot of strategy involved. its obviously not traditional sword fighting so you have to think of it as a completely different sport altogether and respect that these athletes have extremely complex and interesting games that they play when they fence
@hotelroomsmoker well you sir are for one...ignorant in not seeing the complexity of this sport and the tradition of it....and two you are most likely american which explains the ignorance
Dude, I am a fencer and I am sure you couldn't do half of what they are doing on that strip. I mean seriously which do you think is harder, to pull back the Saber and smack your opponent like a brute or flick them with the end of the tip at the perfect distance to score a point?
@mc44996 they are both equally difficult. try attacking someone good across the whole strip in sabre. it is one of the hardest things i have ever had to do
@hotelroomsmoker it's dishonorable and childish for you to say that. you probably don't even fence. you just watch the olympics. what would you know about this sport. As a fencer, i know that it takes a lot of skill to get a wrist touch, and it's way harder then just slashing someone. grow up dude
I fence WAY better than any fencer out there. I have NEVER EVER been beaten in fencing. I use a REAL TWO HANDED sword and I can use it a feather weight rapier. I fence so good halfly because I'm a Mughal. if the Mughal empire was still around I woud be a prince. My best sports are archery, javelin, and fencing. FENCING 4EVA
@carpediem081 have you people not watched fencing before? compared to many other fencers on the tour lopez is actually very quiet. and this is the olympics where everyone is supposed to be fired up
This is really cool, but does anyone know where to find summer fencing classes in St. Louis? I'd like to leaarn but I'm having trouble finding classes.
Dear God I hate the Olympic coverage of fencing. It's the worst for sabre; the damn rings are slowly flying across the screen obscuring entire touches. Save the slow-mo for the 1 minute break, challenges, and the recap.
Podzniakov won around four or five olympic. He has many more international medals. No one has achieved as much success as he has that's currently fencing right now.
that is not slow reflexes: lopez set up the counterattack brilliantly. he got pozdniakov to hold an incredible amount. that is not slow reflexes, it is a sign of an incredible counterattack
it appeared that way with all the yelling and unecessary celebration after each point ... but after watching more fencing videos it is apparently normal to overreact to a point.
Yeah, Lopez did a wonderful job of denying Poz his famous attacks. Over and over you saw him catch Poz in prep or simply time him out with wrist cuts. It seems clear that either his game is an anti-poz game or he prepared for him. I am leaning towards the former since Poz's attacking style has become so popular.

It's pretty normal. Go to pretty much any competition and you'll have people yelling a lot. You get used to it, though it still can be annoying.
