I have never heard of the "Kirov"-class, but I am willing to bet that the Ticonderoga-class may hold the fort against it, even if it stands amidst a disadvantage overall. I wonder though how an aircraft carrier such as the Nimitz-class would fare against the Kirov? Anyone know the answer to that?

The Soviets couldn't build a fleet of aircraft carriers like we could, so they relied on advanced missile technology to counter the range of fighters and bombers. Our navy doesn't have missiles with as much range or usability, but the carriers are capable of projecting force like no other ship.

The range of P-700 is bigger then the F-18's.I agree that an aricraft carrier is a powerfull ship, but its to risky for Russia to build such groups. A carrier group equipped with an Aegis system, however, has a much greater degree of defensibility than at first glance and in general have a greater versatility and utility. Nuclear weapons aren't nearly as effective against a surface fleet as you might think, and at any rate if that were done then the US would retaliate in kind and the whole point would be moot anyways.

As a former contractor for the Navy you forget that before ship to ship action the subs would get a piece of the Kirov Battlecruiser. Also, the Iowa Class Battleships that we have are set to clash with these have 5 times more armor, 7 times more missiles, and 3 times more defensive armaments. It also can use it's famed 16in cannons which are computer controlled and run by the best Navy Gun crews as a backup to sink the Kirov. The Iowa's can take more than the Kirov can give.

Shipwreck missile is much better then harpoon. More range, faster, bigger warhead, and kirov carries 20.
While the tico's SM2's could potentially destroy all of the shipwrecks, there is no way the tico would be able to destroy the kirov with its harpoons which are easily blown up by s400.
Quite fun scenario but a little unrealistic in that there seemed no close in weapon fire from the Ticonderoga (Phalanx). Also dependant on where the harpoon hits the Kirov class depeneds on the damage sustained meaning that it could have been made in-operable by the one hit. Just my thoughts

I speak from over 30 years experience (1978 - 2009) with the US Navy. Kirov - 830' LOA, 94' Beam & 24,000 ton displacement. Iowa - 890' LOA, 108' beam & 45,000 ton displacement. Kirov is shorter, lighter, shorter ranged weapons, and little armor for protection. Sorry, but the Battleship would win - HANDS DOWN!

Are you saying an Iowa has a greater offensive range than Kirov? Or is shorter ranged? You do know that Kirov is nuclear powered correct? The Iowa is what, coal? Oil? The only way an Iowa would kill a Kirov is if the Kirov ran out of its inventory of over 400 missiles and had to get within 130mm range, where it would be decimated by 406mm (or however big they are) shells from the Iowa

Kirov carried many missiles so that if one system failed, there were backups. Russian officers performed maintenance and repair in addition to their regular duties. In the US Navy, enlisted carry out maintenance & repair, thus freeing up the officers to operate the ship more effectively.

That's another thing. The ArcLight will have almost unlimited range on Earth, allowing the USN to strike anywhere. With hypersonic speeds as well, the missiles used to intercept the Harpoons won't work nearly as well.

Sorry Fludblud, the heaviest armored ship ever built was the IJN Yamato class battleships. Turret faces were 25" thick and side armor was 15.7" thick. Kirov only has 3" armor and that is around the reactor compartment. Check your facts!

I served onboard USS Yorktown (CG-48). This 'combat' example is total BS. The Kirov would normally be escorted by at least one or two smaller ships. The Aegis cruiser shown is a Flight 2 configuration and would not have launched only a single Harpoon. It would have been at least 2 sets of 2 missiles each and would have hit from all four points of the compass together.
Defending against the Soviet attack, the Aegis would have manuevered to unmask for & aft 5" guns, CIWS, and countermeasures.

the Sea Sparrow does not have a chance in shooting down the Sandbox missiles, the CIWS could have but i highly doubt that it would have been able to shoot down all of them, i wish the game engineers had put CIWS system in the game but they did not.
they use the SS-N-19 hipwreck which flis fast than mach 2.5 CIWS has less than 8 seconds to respond not nough time to take out one of these missiles. the helos are pretty uselss against the kirovs ive been onboard the kirov it has atleast 4 SAM systems on it that i have seen reality is the kirov would have done exactly what an aegis ship wouldhave done fired in bulk something the game doesn simulate.
compair the ships tico is a 11,000 tonne cruiser kirovs are 28,00 tonne SM2's have small warhead only designed to take down planes and missiles not cruisers, and harpoons are very slow and easy to counter once found. Kirov's are also made to take harpoons and exocets its what they were built for.

This scenario is purely hypothetical... It doesn't actually MATTER which one would win in a 1-on-1 match because it would never happen. The Russians don't have but a few of these ships in service and the US has 22 Ticos (2x61 cell VLS) and 59 Arleigh Burke class DDGs (1x 96 cell VLS) One CVBG has as much firepower than the entire Russian surface navy. As a former contractor for the Navy you forget that before ship to ship action the subs would get a piece of the Kirov Battlecruiser. Also, the Iowa Class Battleships that we have are set to clash with these have 5 times more armor, 7 times more missiles, and 3 times more defensive armaments. It also can use it's famed 16in cannons which are computer controlled and run by the best Navy Gun crews as a backup to sink the Kirov. The Iowa's can take more than the Kirov can give.

Shipwreck missile is much better then harpoon. More range, faster, bigger warhead, and kirov carries 20.
While the tico's SM2's could potentially destroy all of the shipwrecks, there is no way the tico would be able to destroy the kirov with its harpoons which are easily blown up by s400.

Quite fun scenario but a little unrealistic in that there seemed no close in weapon fire from the Ticonderoga (Phalanx). Also dependant on where the harpoon hits the Kirov class depeneds on the damage sustained meaning that it could have been made in-operable by the one hit. Just my thoughts

acually no it cant that is where stealth comes in handy aand plus the u.s has radar that can see farther and shoot befor the kirrov even knows we are there and it only takes one harpoon and if you got hit by 2 sm-2 the kirrov would take alot more than a little damage for the reason that the sm-2 would hit the bridge and knock out the radar and communications to the engine room so the kirrov would just be a sitting duck after the sm or the harpoon hit it

Also, what is a subsonic harpoon going to do to a ship that carriers 300+ anti-air missiles? not to mention the 24 Shipwreck missiles in its deck?
Harpoon is a great weapon for killing tankers and artificial reefs

Once again Nekoizmase4 - CHECK YOUR FACTS! Kirov and her sister ships were built in 1973, 1980, 1984, & 1986 respectively. They WERE state of the art at that time. I speak from over 30 years experience (1978 - 2009) with the US Navy. Kirov - 830' LOA, 94' Beam & 24,000 ton displacement. Iowa - 890' LOA, 108' beam & 45,000 ton displacement. Kirov is shorter, lighter, shorter ranged weapons, and little armor for protection. Sorry, but the Battleship would win - HANDS DOWN!

Are you saying an Iowa has a greater offensive range than Kirov? Or is shorter ranged? You do know that Kirov is nuclear powered correct? The Iowa is what, coal? Oil? The only way an Iowa would kill a Kirov is if the Kirov ran out of its inventory of over 400 missiles and had to get within 130mm range, where it would be decimated by 406mm (or however big they are) shells from the Iowa

Nekoizmase4 - you need to check your facts as well. While an impressive ship, Kirov class were a bit larger than WW I battlecruisers with missiles instead of guns. Kirov carried many missiles so that if one system failed, there were backups. Russian officers performed maintenance and repair in addition to their regular duties. In the US Navy, enlisted carry out maintenance & repair, thus freeing up the officers to operate the ship more effectively.

The Kirov is based around the idea that bigger is better. A piece of logic that is undoubtably flawless. The ticonderoga wasnt built to combat ships like the kirov class. I love the kirov class, and i love that Russia still upholds the tradition of battleships. Something that i highly respect.

@XkriskrossX Bad thing is, anti-ship missiles launched from aircraft of the USN have more range than ship-launched weapons (and possibly SAMs, but IDK). Needless to say, the JSF could probably sneak up on the Kirov and launch ArcLights at it.
That's another thing. The ArcLight will have almost unlimited range on Earth, allowing the USN to strike anywhere. With hypersonic speeds as well, the missiles used to intercept the Harpoons won't work nearly as well.

Battleships would still be used today instead of missile cruisers and many other things would be different. Sorry Fludblud, the heaviest armored ship ever built was the IJN Yamato class battleships. Turret faces were 25" thick and side armor was 15.7" thick. Kirov only has 3" armor and that is around the reactor compartment. Check your facts!

I served onboard USS Yorktown (CG-48). This 'combat' example is total BS. The Kirov would normally be escorted by at least one or two smaller ships. The Aegis cruiser shown is a Flight 2 configuration and would not have launched only a single Harpoon. It would have been at least 2 sets of 2 missiles each and would have hit from all four points of the compass together.
Defending against the Soviet attack, the Aegis would have manuevered to unmask for & aft 5" guns, CIWS, and countermeasures.

For example: Ticonderoga (US missile cruiser) has only 122 rockets. Kirov class has hundreds rockets.
Ticonderoga use anti-ship rockets RGM-84 Harpoon:

As for the Sea sparrow vs. a sandbox missile then why did the Navy rid the CIWS then? but there is one other counter measure not ever thought of I see, and it does exist the ECM thats faster than anything we excersised it in 2004 as well Thanks to Iran :P

My question is where is the SSDF of the US Navy ship i.e. CIWS Sea Sparrow?? they are made for these kinds of encounters however in a real scenario as well I would be assisting in the Launching of Aircraft to just kill fast and call it a day. -ABE2 (AW) USN

the Sea Sparrow does not have a chance in shooting down the Sandbox missiles, the CIWS could have but i highly doubt that it would have been able to shoot down all of them, i wish the game engineers had put CIWS system in the game but they did not.

they use the SS-N-19 hipwreck which flis fast than mach 2.5 CIWS has less than 8 seconds to respond not nough time to take out one of these missiles. the helos are pretty uselss against the kirovs ive been onboard the kirov it has atleast 4 SAM systems on it that i have seen reality is the kirov would have done exactly what an aegis ship wouldhave done fired in bulk something the game doesn simulate.

compair the ships tico is a 11,000 tonne cruiser kirovs are 28,00 tonne SM2's have small warhead only designed to take down planes and missiles not cruisers, and harpoons are very slow and easy to counter once found. Kirov's are also made to take harpoons and exocets its what they were built for.

Ow one other thing, didn't the Georgian Navy was able to do some damage to Peter The Great last year? Game does not always reflect real word scenarios. Ciao

the georgian fleet was sunk in its port without firing a shot by russian ground forces when they took poti. peter the great was part of the blockade but took no part in any fighting.
there were rumours that the reactor had malfunctions but those turned out to be untrue.

thata because the kirovs are HUGE, they are the largest non carrier warships built since the iowas in ww2 and have armour several feet thick.
they are essentially battleships with tonnes of missiles instead of guns. it will take more than a few SM2s to take it down.

tico can fires Tomahawks which could be armed with nuke warheads,but they do not have those in service any more after the START treaty, and the SS-N-19 were armed with nukes,but i am pretty sure they are conventional 1000kg warheads now
