  • omfg. I can hear tosin's playing in this

  • the bass makes this so good

  • 12 people are deaf !!!

  • kurt is one of the modern classics! my personal all time favorite improviser would have to be holdsworth. i'm not being superior or anything, but the guy just has skills that people aren't supposed to have. both players are masters of their sub-genre.

  • tasteful song

  • that download link is down. can I get this any other way? Thx

  • @elherna262 Why don't you save up ,99 cents and purchase it from Amazon?

  • @mstott25 Because I'm not in the us and I don't have a credit card

  • @elherna262 Oh I had no idea how hard your situation was, by all means rip Rosenwinkel off

  • another tiresome pattern filled note fest--sorry but this type of playing, pattern then cliche is old and silly regardless of the players ability and education.

  • THumbs up if you got here from Tosin Abasi

  • @Metallica4Ever93 Clearly a comparison to be taken seriously from someone with a username such as yours.

  • @fodera6 probably one of the funniest comments ive read. but thats not to say that metallica is not good. they are musical geniuses in their own right.

  • this guy is great, but he plays to complex stuff for my taste. im sure zakk wylde can play this stuff even better than this guy

  • @Metallica4Ever93 Seriously, shut the fuck up

  • @Metallica4Ever93 haha thats cute.

  • @Metallica4Ever93 not sure if srs..

  • @Metallica4Ever93 i bet you're a comedian. that's hysterical!

  • @Metallica4Ever93 it doesn't matter what you can play, its what you can create. and zakk wylde is such a gimmicky player

  • @Metallica4Ever93 AUHEUAHEUAH

  • TOSIN ABASI sent me here. Were you?

  • @roseking900 Yes Sir !

  • i love math metal and most hardcore music but there is something about jazz and blues that im drawn to.. it's complex timings and free range of never really being sure what comes next is very refreshing. as a guitarist i feel like this is where things started in a way. unfortunately i never took the time to learn the classic music roots.... :(, but im not dead yet

  • @burtonkid0012 Sounds like your on an exciting journey. It's fun when the rubber hits the road.

  • I never liked this guy...and i am not too sure about his music too.I don't know it just seems to me his playing has no "Balls".The king is John Scofield for me and he is just such a great improviser that i cannot even express it with words.Don't lynch me i said i don't like him not that he sucks.

  • please check out my videos. Young jazz guitarist playing all or nothing at all off of east coast love affair.

  • does anybody know a good place to find a lead sheet for this with correct voicings--as in a chord diagram with the ones he plays?

  • Hey he's not wearing a cap here =D

  • I just saw Rosenwinkel last night at the BPC playing his songs with big band arrangement. It was wicked

  • what a group!

  • yes!!!! i always enjoy jeff ballard

  • Jeff Ballard is the best drummer Rosenwinkel has ever had on this piece..

  • He's not wearing his hat here.

  • Best time sense on the planet these three.

  • Excellent demonstration Simple and too the point..

  • If anyone out there would like the full head trnscription as played on the album (including all chord melody, not one from compositions book) let me know and ill email it through.

    Tim

  • @notout37

    i do! machinewebuilt @ yahoo. c om

  • sorry my comment was pretty stupid. but i do like sam rivers, eric dolphy and some of the more free jazz stuff, as well as the old school jazz like king oliver and johnny dodds, charlie parker, up through thelonius and miles and whatnot. then for other genres i like berio, xenakis, matmos, squarepusher, animals as leaders, behold the arctopus, and a bunch of other shit but yeah sorry about the dumb comment fellas. i usually dont leave comments like that.

  • octipi.. dude if you are boring here just go somewhere else . what are negative comments about..? peace brother.. open your heart.. this music is beautiful.. be honest. and go find some music you can enjoy if you dont like this.. kurt is doing his best, try the same..

  • Pentatonic scales aren't really monotonous. you can do almost anything with them, including outside stuff. You just have to use them with open ears

  • Hey koonseypoo, what the hell do you know about jazzers?

  • You sir are an idiot.

  • Awesome!

  • @octipi ROFL, stupid kids never fail to amuse me. Keep playing your monotonous pentatonic bullshit, kid.

  • Hi octipi, can you post some videos of your playing so we can all see how it's supposed to be done?

    Thanks!

  • @octipi dude, there are tons of guitar players at berkley, and 90% of them will be working in a local guitar shop. Also, how is this boring? its fine if you dont like it but dont call it generic. dont call it lame.

-you mock what you dont understand-

  • @octipi Lol there is something wrong with you... To be fair I cluldn't get into kurt for aaaages. I hope one day you get it. Cause when you do you'll be thankful for this amazing music!

  • but with that being said i do love kurts work with q-tip

  • i'm sure not everyone who reads your comments only want to disaprove.

you mentionned sam rivers but you dont seem to like his style. what do YOU listen to?

  • @Hoopermazing I transcribed a bunch of Kurt. he plays 90% diatonic. And the notes that he chooses out of that diatonic scale end up being pentatonic. Pentatonic scales are the ones to use. I used to think that people that used a lot of penta tonics are amateur. But as one of Kurts friends told me. Pentatonic scales is where its at. If your not p,laying pentatonic something is wrong with you. It always made me think of the shitty guitar players in guitar center. But then i transcribed.

  • you dont know NOTHING of music........

  • @octipi Yes! I agree! Don't let these youTube Jazz goons make you feel stupid (notice how they all come out of the woodwork as soon as you have an opinion that's less than worshipping their idol).... Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane...the list goes on of great improvisers who played at the highest of levels. Kurt is pretty good, but you're right, most of these guys music (especially Fly and groups like that) is boring and sounds like over-grown college kids

  • Great piece, great musicians

  • What I love about kurt is his ability to take stuff from all genres of music like Keith Jarret, Marbin and Q-Tip and blend it seamlessly into his own unique style.

    p.s

If you want to check out my music it's on myspace / carpimusic

  • 4:22-4:37 is the most awe-inspiring piece of music I have ever heard.

  • Not a fucking race! this music !IDIOTS!!! THIS ART!!!

  • Deep men!!!

  • esta banda suena sensacional!

  • 3:07-3:15 sick phrase!

  • he plays somewhat of the same phrase on the album,

  • these arguments are stupid bullshit!!! just listen to the music and shut the fuck up!!!

  • kurt wears really funny looking pants. check out 3:57

  • Comment removed

  • Of course he can't play guitar! Because he's a saxophone player!

    :))))

  • yes finally someone knows what im talking about:) he is my favorite sax player though

  • don't worry, there's a technique that will work for you, it's called CRI: cranial rectal inversion...

  • Nice Doctor Octagon

  • please....I know It could be difficult for some people but,I suggest you to try to listen "carefully" "some" other music before writing or sayings thins like that!

  • The most very beutiful song, kurt is a genius

  • is it ust em or is this really blurry

  • It's just you.

  • Awesome playing all around!

Anyone know what make guitar he's playing here?

    Thanks for posting this fodera6

  • You're welcome!

He's playing an Epiphone here. Not sure if it's a Sheraton or what but it's some kind of 335 style.

    He's playing a Sadowsky now.

  • @fodera6 Thats a Sheraton II Korean made, cause it has that brownish look (tobacco sunburst i think), i have Chinese one and its classic vintage sunburst, thats how i know

  • @fodera6 Saw him play D'angelico a few months ago. Also heard about him using Benedetto.

  • Comment removed

  • @fodera6 It's Sheraton II tobacco sunburst

  • @fodera6 It is indeed a sheraton

  • @bedacoals It looks and sounds likan Epiphone Sheraton II.. one of the better of the "late" generation of Epi..

  • hey! what happened to featuring mark turner?

by the way timjmoran, i think zorrologie is pulling our leg...

  • What do you mean? Mark Turner is right there.

  • He cut some of his fingers off.

  • He's fine, I'm seeing him next month.

  • well if you're seeing him next month he must be able to play again! hooray! :)

  • He's been playing again for a few months.

  • Did he have some kind of mechanical finger replacement?

  • No, they just put em back on.

  • yeah don't worry he doesn't have any mechanical finger replacement, I should know i've studied at the man's house and this guy kicked my butt; i'm talking about mark turner

  • mark turner busted shit on a saw, kinda sucks, cause don't know whether he'll ever be able to play again

  • he's fine now

  • Yeah, hes totally fine now. He was at my school today with jeff ballard and larry grenadier (fly trio) doing a clinic.

  • sickkk what school do you go to?

  • Lincoln High School in Portland OR. We don't have a really good jazz program or anything, we just have a really motivated, awesome teacher who does what ever possible to get some really hip players in the school.

  • who do you mean? ((:

  • OK...ZORRO..you are certainly welcome to yer opinion, but in this case, you are just plain WRONG.I just came back from hearing 2 KILLin' sets by him..and he is STUNNing, one of the best guitarists in Jazz right now..Metheny, Scofield, Martino, you name 'em,Kurt is on par with all of them.

Great chops, terrific compositions, AWEsome band, he has it ALL. You cannot POSSibly say

he is "not good" and expect to be taken seriously.. I mean come AWNN!!!

  • Seems really silly to debate whether one player is better than another- and don't get me wrong, Metheny IS great. I love the guy and his music; been following him for a Lonnng time... and he is a Brilliant composer- all I was trying to say was that

IMHO, Rosenwinkel is right up there as an Improviser- on a technical level, he is as good as anyone out there.

  • metheny is good but you need to calm down kurt is the shit

  • haha.

  • Hi,

he also commented on how much he dislikes Coltrane and digs Kenny G @ Coltrane Alabama video. He just doesn't like jazz. Just a troll/jerk... Just don't comment his opinion...

  • oh damn i was thinking i gueess its possble its in an alternate tuning, but that would be crazy. the intro is crazy, if you have the cd

  • It would've been nice to hear M.T.'s solo...

Kurt's Great... I can't believe there would be argument about that. I don't know how anyone would say that this tune is 'Static' in any way. To the contrary... this tune sounds like it would be a bitch to blow over.

    Just sayin...

  • is there a chance that some one could have the rest of the tune??????

  • Or this whole show perhaps?

  • Kurt Rosenwinkel is a german name. his roots must be in germany

  • Not his roots... maybe his grand grand whatever parents roots. He was born in Philadelphia.

  • Kurt is German

  • is the guitar tuned down a half step? I'm learning this song but I think he uses his Bb string often...

  • yeah i heard it is played in an alternate tuning

  • tenor player sounds like joshua redman

  • no its mark turner not joshua redman don't get it twisted mark turner is way different than josh

  • For Sure, I like Turner better though... Just My preference... The two remind me of Trane and Sonny. Turner being more like Trane to me at least. But Sounds nothing Like Joshua Redman though.

  • Not comparable with Redman. Turner is a beast and not a show man like Redman. This guys can swing like nobody! My favorite is Kenny Garrett though not Gorelick obviously:)

  • maestro tocas divino !!! quiero tocar como tu

  • yes it's like a post-metheny waltz for debby - good observation!

  • kurts one of the best out there who dares to go and insult him, its funny cause i know none of you could play as good as kurt hes like a lethal weapon

  • hey` why don`t you guys stop arguing and listen to my FART instead.. tell me if you love it.

  • Look kids, if you can't see the beauty in this tune, you have no business listening to it. Compositions don't have to be great in order to be enjoyed. Try telling the people who actually like this tune (listeners like myself) that it is not a great composition.

  • definitly the next generation of jazz in the best form, although to mytaste it got abit too complicated and hence too much "thinking" involved and less "soul" ...

  • I agree. Beautiful nonetheless.

  • not strong enough composition? lol which listeners are you speaking of??? yourself??? sorry that is ridiculous in MY opinion

  • Okay, I understand. But when did vapid and static jazz compositions become great? I guess along with music in all other styles. Yes?

  • have you heard the album version of this song ? i think its a masterpiece this version has skipped about 2 mins ahead , the intro is one of the best parts , it just bothered me that one would say anything negative about this tune

  • Since when do people get all up in arms when somebody offers an opinion about something? You might think of it as negativity, but part of a good conversation is contrasting view points. I'm not saying it's a poor composition and I'm not saying it's the best, but it is helpful to hear what people think of it. Be it "good" or "bad".

    P.S.

I think this is a good performance.

  • have you considered the rhythmic devices they are using in this tune? they're quite cool. tell me, do you think this song is in 3/4 or 4/4? the fact that they are implying two time signatures at the same time throughout makes this song great for me.. let alone the beautiful and original improvisation of Rosenwinkel's aswell.

  • 3/4

  • "Vapid and static" is a little strong, doncha think? I hear some changes. And by your logic, 'All Blues' and 'Impressions' are not great.

  • Yeah, boo to you and your comment. Boo I say.

  • Okay, Now I feel bad, and I'm sorry for all the pessimism. Yes, boo to me. I do think Kurt is an amazing player and I need to look at more of music. The improvisation here is world-class.

  • I'm sorry man, I shouldn't have replay the way I did. It just seems so ugly to me when people are too critical and cannot appreciate artists like Kurt. sorry again.

  • Idiot

  • Kurt Rosenwinkel...the man from another planet

  • Wow this is amazing this is the first time I've heard this song properly; he sounds so at home playing this song. what an absolute gift to all of us Kurt Rosenwinkel is. thanks for everything Kurt

  • What are you all talking about he doesnt sound like pat, he sounds like himself. Im a fan of them both and Pat is great, but Kurt is much more progressive with his solos and compositions. Of course he's influenced by metheny, everyone is but he sounds nothing like him. The lick after 5 mins is all kurt, it sounds nothing like a pat metheny lick. Their guitar tones sound nothing alike and their approach to music is not the same. And no, he doesnt use a goddamn blues scale the whole time!! Jesus!

  • That needed to be said! Agree 110%! This sounds not like Metheny at all. He clearly found his own voice that can be distinguished from other guitarists. Metheny sounds so much different to me... I wouldn't know how one could come up with comparing the two. Besides this: Never compare Jazz musicians and NEVER EVER tell a jazz musician he sounds like some other jazz musician, even if he does. Such a statement does hurt most jazz musicians badly... It is like saying: Your life has failed.

  • This is the first time I've ever heard this guy, so I can't speak objectively. But my first impression is that, yes, he is a great player. But this composition (if you're comparing KR to PM, forget the playing style) is not that interesting. I know that I need to listen to more of his work, and I wll. But I will never listen to this piece again - quite boring. I could listen to Pat Metheny all day, everyday, for the rest of my life. His composition are masterful.

    "Blues scale", that's funny.

  • I think Kurt's been on the scene long enough to say he sounds like Kurt Rosenwinkel. Metheny is his own animal, which I prefer. Metheny never fails to put me in a better mood, just don't get that from Kurt. Very interesting player though.

  • love so much more than metheny..

  • In a way her reminds of him, but he has a completely different style as well...

  • WOW!!!. He's amazing!!!

  • beautuful

  • Take a solo Mark!

  • haha nice one

  • Kurt is the greatest.

  • wow, these guys sure know how to groove.

  • o man i just got this cd, never heard anything like it except for metheny maybe, man...

  • Absolutly genious! Man this guy knows how _this_ time feels! What a great player!

  • kurt entiende todo veni a argentina

  • Comment removed

  • still so fresh!

  • god, just a god

  • Nem tudom, miért van oda mindenki ezért... annyira nem nagy szám a csávó. Jó, nem is rossz, de nem seggeltem le.

  • kurt is awesome, ilove his compositions

  • kurt rocks my socks!!

  • is it possible that here kurt is playing in standard tuning???? ...cause i found some chords just looking at his hands

  • i think it's drop D tuning.

  • I think its actually E flat tuning

  • really I wanna see him. but fuck i'm in japan

I really am jealous ppl in US or europe.you guys are super lucky men!
