I know you don't like the whole guys telling you how to play, but as a suggestion, just use the laser rifle instead of the heavy rifle, and get the revolver with the frag rounds.

The crossbow is helpful too, but that is just up to you anyways. However the laser rifle and the revolver are beasts. And remember to hold x to activate the weapon upgrades, they go a long way to help you get rid of all the cannon fodder.
