Every experience is different, but there can be some discomfort, soreness and minimal pain from what I understand from medical literature and donor accounts.
I think the big myth that people are trying to break is that one should anticipate excruciating pain that you cannot handle. This myth is preventing people from registering for donation.
Absolute painlessness? No. But minimal pain (some people only feel soreness & discomfort) that can be dealt with in a short period of time? Yes.
I was diagnosed with AML October 2007. My brother was my donor. They say it's not painful, but my brother was in pain. Getting the shots to overproduce his cells made his bones hurt.
sorry about your disease and your brother's discomfort. i've signed up as a potential donor too, but i believe that with any medical procedure, there's a risk of being uncomfortable. even needles aren't "comfortable." i wouldn't care though, if i'm saving a life. good luck and i wish you both well.
And I'm glad that you are going to be a donor. I hope you do get the opportunity to donate, because there are a lot of people that won't get that chance because there aren't enough donors. I was lucky. I would donate if I could. I wish you (and whomever you donate too) the best.
