I posted the haka because my football kids were invited to watch the UH guyz practice and they were stoaked they did the haka for my team, then all these negative comments come flowing in....how sad is that.

our boys are supposed to debut a new war chant against UNLV on sat. sept 15. but doesnt "kapa o pango" translate to team in black. they took out "aotearoa" in the UH version and some of the motions are different. what does stand out is the line refering to the silver fern. we got silver kapa designs but not ferns. anywho, it is a powerful haka and the guys did not mean any disrespect. peace.

I agree with writing their own haka but I just talked to a maori healer and his wife two nights ago and they said that many maori believe that they originated in Hawai`i so in a way, it justifies using the maori haka which is by origin, tied to Hawai`i in many ways..so I'm not hung up on them doing their own until someone teaches them all the concepts of writing their own haka.

Being that the haka was taught to them by the cousins of a maori player, I don't see anything wrong with them using this particular haka for now... but yes, eventually they should write their own using Hawaiian metaphors and words. There are some beautiful Hawaiian haka written by the people who run the makali`i. Maybe they can help the warriors....

Why doesnt the UH football team do Ai'Ha'a because that is the Hawaiian war chants. King Kamehameha's forces use to do it before every battle. What i dont get is were in Hawai'i not New Zeland so we should do our own chants not someone elses

I don't think they care if Hawaii do the haka. Their just pissed off because the haka that these boys are doing is very similar, if not identical, to Kapa A Pongo - the haka that is performed by the NZ All Blacks. If UH created and performed their own unique Hawaiian war dance then I'm sure you wouldn't get any smack over it.

Understand our position, if you don't do the haka properly you are belittling those to whom it belongs, the All Blacks own this particular haka. Maori don't mind others doing the haka as long as it is done properly. Hawaiians and Maori are closely related so you have every right to do the haka so long as you know the situation regarding the haka.
