Reality check: Max speed means nothing. I have seen max speed of 60 knots on my GPS due to random GPS fix error. Judging from the wake and other visual clues I estimate speed through water at around 13-15 knots sustained. Yes you will see jumps surfing down the swells, but that's also to be expected in any boat.
That's awesome!! It reminds me of my youth boardsailing solo off of Sauble Beach on Lake Huron in brisk 30 knot winds. Love it!! It makes you feel alive!!
It ll be interesting to see any multihul sail on high winds but closehauled to watch how design behaves. Especially on short chop. I am a Trimaran frmer owner (Brown 38 offsoundings old design low profile) anyway, I know liitle bit about multihulls and they great on broad reach, but on close hauled reach is the real test for any design which I d like to see....
This is an Outremer 45ft Catamaran sailing down wind. Quite common for a catamaran of this size to do these speeds and the apparent wind speed would only be around 10 - 15 knots. The reason he has spray coming off the port bow is not so much the pressure of sailing but because the bow is pushing into the swell in front. The bow sprit out the front is used to attache a screacher or over size genoa. Cheers

Hahahaha! You're right. Still though, 22mph is screaming for a big cruiser like this...and takes a fair amount of balls, or stupidity, to do, since these cats are quite flippable.
I would not expect it to be easy to flip, its obviously far more stable than a Hobie cat 16 (which I sail) and I've gone out in 32mph steady winds, and it wasn't heeling at all, it doesn't take stupidity or balls, just brains and fast reactions :)
Fast? 22.4? Ok I don't sail cause I hate slow motion any way. The wonder question is about no seat belts and the waves, so hard. I would be inside whispering some prays.
Look up Volvo 70 if you wanna see fast (look at the wake coming off those boats).
But anything over 15 kts under sail is pretty fast - once you've done it you'll agree. Just think what 30 mph on waterskis feels like. 30 mph sounds slow until you're on skis or a skateboard or a windurfer or a sailboat.
At the beginning the sails look over-trimmed in for the wind which is coming over the stern starboard quarter, unless they were trying to de-power the rig.
On my cat, when running a very broad reach, I regularly over trim my fore sail, be it the genoa, or jib. This helps to keep the lee hull from wanting to "submarine". Especially in larger swells.
I need to get me one of those "Outremers"!

looks fun. Im used to monohull design.

KanzlerM; Look again, specifically at 0:26 to 0:41. No central "V" wake, therefore no central hull, therefore not a "tri".

nice boat but your gps was in mph not knots. hyperbole.

Yes, it is.

Looks to me like it has three hulls...
which means it's a Trimaran.

That's multihull sailing!!!! I surfed down the Ca. coast in a Corsair F-31 it was a blast!!!

I show the handheld GPS because for taking the pic it was easier to show than the GPS on board, the speed exceed 23 kts indeed!

Handheld GPS maxspeed can't be trusted. I've once noticed 24kts but analysing series of positions in 5sec intervals proved rather 13kts to be a fact.
It was run offwind in force 5B and nice swell.

hands off sailing I would depower a bit too...nice shots, beautiful, serious swell! Nice boat too
