What Christopher Plummer does here is a bit like Paul Henreid in "Casablanca" when he is starting to singing the Marseillaise against the damned nazis to show them that there are people who resist them.
this song makes me cry so much. we are currently performing the show at my school, and otnight was the first night i had a glance at the backstage screen of this scene. the song makes me so sad cuz of their situation and it also makes me think of how sad i am that this amazing experience of our show is ending soon. <3 Eidelweiss. Bless my homeland forever
I am always disappointed and indignant when people think that the Hitler was German and try to pin it on Germany. Hitler was from Austria!
Love this song though... I prefer it this time rather than the part at the beginning of the movie, because there is so much more feeling here. It is also kinda sad/cute when the Captain can't bear to sing anymore and everybody joins in.
@Deutchlandcl He may have been born in Austria, but he moved to Germany at the age of 3. So it would be pretty accurate to say he was from Germany, I think.
@onehmscer Maybe, but I'm just talking as a matter of pride in your country. The thing that ticks me off is when people talk about Germany they tend to think Germans are evil or something because they associate Germans/Germany with Hitler. A lot of the Germans DIDN'T want to be a part of the war, they only did it to protect their families.
sadly captain von trapp died of cancer less then four years after their arrival in the united states, and the US tried to kick them out at first thinking they were spies for hitler, so they didn,t have an easy time when they first arrived in the united states
The saddet part of this moment is he's looking at the crowd and realizes the finality of what he's getting ready to do. He'll never see his homeland again.
I'm from the USA and have never had the money to travel anywhere, but I hope to soon so I can see all the beautiful places amd meet people such as all throughout Europe; this song particularly makes me cry because my great-grandfather was from Austria.
being from a German background and my father stationed in Austria in the Korean War, it is such a heartful song, we ( as a family) tonite looked at his pictures touching
There were more casualties on omaha beach on d day. Why the americans had that particular beach as to one of the others i do not know however a surprise panzer unit was there training by fluke that day which obviously caused carnage. Numbers are give or take on that particular day nearly 400% higher there than any other beach. Point du hoc (between utah and omaha) were something like 90% losses, all american rangers but after seeing what they had to climb under fire it really is no surprise.
This song was written as a final defiance to the expanding Third Reich and everything the Nazis stood for. In my opinion, both the scene and the song capture this feeling very well. The Rodgers and Hammerstein duo were simply genial.
Oscar Hammerstein II remains the greatest lyricist in the English language, but he was out of his mind, when he decided to adapt this story for the stage. Only 13 years before, our boys had liberated the death camps, and the Austrians were even more enthusiastic Nazis than the Germans.
I'm watching the sound of music in language arts cuz were reading a book and in the book they preform the sound o music and not many people saw it so we watched it and 2 weeks later I'm still singing this song EVERYWHERE I go :-)

hello im afraid the british do not think like that. My grandfather always said without the americas backing we'd had never of won.
Hitler convinced the japanese emperor america needed to be took out. Remember what happened at pearl harbour ?? Indirect order of sir adolf hitler im afraid.
What happened at Pearl harbour did wake america up and they did realise they couldnt avoid the war in europe. Thats when we joined up to lead onto d day.
@neocant1 Are you serious? Who do u think was Hitler's next intended target after gobbling up England and the USSR? U ever wonder why the USA only fought a holding action in the Pacific for years while they focused on the invasion of Europe in order to get Hitler? It was because they recognised the direct threat the Third Reich posed to American interests and survival. It took Pearl Harbour to wake them up: meanwhile Europe had been totally devastated. Check casualty figures b4 u talk sacrifice
I got to sing this last night and the night before as Captain von Trapp in my high school musical. I honestly felt like crying when I realized it would be the last time I would ever sing it, which was great for getting into my character!
This has stayed as evocative as the first time I saw it, aged 7..I still cry over it just as I did then, so innocent in the mid 60's. Happy days...thankyou for posting.
Julie Andrews had such a great amazing gifted voice, then they had to do surgery and screw up. I cry every time on this song. I love this song, Julie Andrews, and The Sound of Music. It deffienitly is better than all this stupid witchcraft and vampire crud. <3
@Myblue741 They play this song in Kadena-cho, Okinawa, Japan at noon at least! I have heard it many of times and it always reminds me of the movie! :)
remember this song so much as a boy under the most terrible pressure people resisted fascism

Plus, this song contains the only clunky lyric I know of from him:
“Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow” (nine syllables for only eight beats),
“Bloom and grow, forever.”
He should have written something like,
“For all time, may you bloom and grow,”
“Bloom and grow, forever.”
