@LeopardFixJeopardy Yea the game was shit, Elite was good on the ST and Dungeon Master was the best game ever! The Sentinel was pretty good, Archipelagos that was good. In fact there was loads of good games thinking about it. Stunt car racer, Guild of Thieves, Monkey Island, damn I need to buy an ST!
This literally made my week. I've searched unsuccessfully for this theme tune sporadically over the years and now that I've found it I'm totally making it my ring tone. Thanks so much for uploading this!
Oh wow yep, I remember first seeing this game on the saturday morning show Get Fresh with Gaz Top and Gilbert the snotty alien. I think it replaced Xenon as a quick shootemup competition for kids.
I loved how smooth the graphics ran. All other 3D games at the time were kind of stuck at 4 frames per second so this one soon became a fave to play.
In the eighties I remember my best mate coming up to me and saying "Hey "MrHeineken32"! I've got a new game on my Atari that goes "STAAAAAARGLIIIDER!!".
I remember seeing this game back in 1986 in a computer store in Ottawa. I went with my dad to pick the game up and the guy showed us the game on a demo computer he had. Both my dad and I thought the music was coming from a radio at first because sound like this was something new from a computer lol. Brings back some good memories.
This sort of music was beyond the times back then. Remember that not even technotronic existed and this song was very electronic, over elaborated and with human voices and a delay effect!
I had this on the Spectrum and it came with a music cassette containing 2 sides of a much longer rendition of this intro. I seem to remember it had a girl and a guy singing in it too. Sadly, you can't find the tapes anymore for love nor money - if anyone has it still, please mp3 it and get it on here! It sounded great!
I was about 15 or so when I got my hands on a spanking brand new 1040STf. These were probably the best times of my life, as far as computers are concerned. Good old days.
I hear ya. man...think I was 19 when I got my 1040ST, and just could not believe the graphics and sound after having an 800XL for so many years. Good times.
Yes indeed. Kids are so bloody blase these days about the next gen of consoles that come out, but the ST and Amiga were a whole new world, a quantum leap from the machines that had come before. Full WIMP environments, viable 3D processing, hundreds of colours, and thousands of enthusiasts building games and other applications for them as one- or two-man teams. Great days.
I actually can't remember if the game ever ended. I know you could destroy the starglider flagship, but I think the game just kept going after that. (?) Essentially you were trying to keep your fighter craft in the field, stealing energy from the energy lines, rearming at bases, fighting off the various enemies on the ground and in the air. It was actually pretty fun as a 3D vector combat game. A lot like the arcade Star Wars game, but with greater depth and variety.
That's interesting, I keep telling my dad he should put all the tunes he did up on iTunes but he wasn't sure if it was worth the effort of hunting all the DATS out of the loft or if anyone would be bothered to hear them let alone buy them.
Personally I think they would. Maybe we could start a petition to make him do it! Or maybe I'll make him make it into an album on CD or something. Hmmm...
email me: hollyjazzlowe at gmail if you think its a good idea!
Gosh my dad (Dave Lowe) did the music to this and it just brings back my childhood of hearing it blasting out of his little studio all day! Good times!!
At that time games were all original concepts, and you could be left wondering what on earth you were supposed to do, it didn't prevent you from experimenting and being fascinated.
My dad DAve Lowe did the music to this and a bunch of other games around that time. He worked under the name UNCLE ART. It was just him though, and sometimes he got my mum to speak... I think there's some point where they're saying "Starglider" over and over..! Takes me back to me childhood. xx
Talk about bringing back memories. Okay, that name does ring a bell. He did the music to IK+ and Afterburner as well. Damn. Almost up there with Rob Hubbard, Jochen Hippel, Chris Hulsbeck, and the like. These guys will not be forgotten!
great simple game but highly addictive! on my Amiga 1000 the sample tune only played once during loading. The title screen had some naff synth music instead....
Oh my god that is fantastic. The PC version had the same titlescreen, but horribly degraded for the 4-color CGA screen. It certainly didn't have the awesome 80s-tastic music, though.

The most epic intro for one very average and boring game! That music must have been 3/4 of the diskette.
