Elena Mukhina was so much more graceful than Nadia Comaneci. A much better dancer. Nadia was terrific at 14 but in this competition she just looks awkward.
She talked about the sports system in the Soviet Union USSR and said that they don't care they just want u to do it, they don't think you're tried. to them it's just an excuse because you don't want to do it. watch sports: more than a game. You will be shocked.
I was in gymnastics back in the 70's/80's....the spring floor wasn't used in 76, I don't think they had them then- they started to catch on around 78- not sure if they used one at the chamionships that year- I think 79/Dallas was the first time- my club didn't get one until 1980- I loved them- added about 4 inches to every move- made getting them aroung/over easier- but landings were trickier- becasue you bounced....Elena's the greatest tragedy in the sport's history- amazing talent, such a loss
Yelena you were an angel and contributed so much to the sport. I wonder what happened to that coach, not her coach that pushed her into doing that skill, in spite of her feeling tired that made her hurt herself.
So beautiful....I love the middle part of this routine, the beautiful choreography. She was truly stellar...makes me feel so sad whenever I watch her:(
@ralucagymnast I also love the part to Dr Zhivago music, the epitome of Soviet artistry, I also agree that her story is one of the greatest tragedies in gymnastics history....
I never knew that???? still i'd like to see the gymnasts of today perform their double twisting doubles on this kind of floor.......the bounce here is nothing like today
I love the commentator at 0:25 goes ooohhh!!! LOL

It was unfair to do all this in only padded not spring floor .

Actually the floor was actually slightly springy just not as springy as it is today.
