The people who get the most tips surprisingly are the people who do it just to have fun and entertainment - most street performers that do it for money realize quickly that they won't get anywhere.
Here's a better list of things you'll need:
1. A day job
2. an ACTUAL talent
3. A permit so the city knows you won't suck.
4. A big guy to chase away bums and guard the cash
5. Patience

You're dead wrong on this one.
All the biggest money makers ask for the money.
Look at Butterflyman, tony Vera, OobaOoba, or any other guy that asks for the money, and then look at the open guitar case of someone who doesn't.
I know I earn twenty times as much AT LEAST since I started asking for the money.
