#5 Spur of the moment/Jess-Belle/Valley of the shawdow (3 way tie)
There are so many excellent episodes, its really hard to come with a list of the best ones, But my least favorite hands down is "5 charactersin search of an exit" No offense to anyone who likes it, but I just find it boring.
6,7,8,10 are not widely regarded as top 10 material - but I respect your picks. The others are not to be contested, although I can't imagine putting 'The Silence' in the #1 spot. A few others that I think demand to be in any top 10 list:
My favorites: "The Hitchhiker" (with beautiful Inger Stevens as the troubled Nan Adams), "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?," "Time Enough at Last," and "To Serve Man." Tied for fith place are the episodes where the Earth is moving closer to the sun, the New Orleans rich man makes his family wear masks, and the man promises residents of an Old West town that he can resurrect their loved ones.
"Nightmare at 20,000 feet and "The Invaders" These two episodes the the heck out of me when I was a young girl about 8 or 9 yrs. old. I lived then in Toronto, Canada and I still do. I am almost 60yrs. old and still love Mr. serling's "Twilight Zone". Thank-you Mr. Serling! xox
i saw a lot today and yesterday in marathon any one els .. iv already seen every episode though my fav is the one with the monster on the air plane wing that one classic also were 5 people are stuck in a trash can hobo belarina army man clown i think there more and they try to get out and at end they turn out to be dolls and nick of time that one is a good one to
My top 10 are: 10-Living Doll. 9-To Serve Man. 8-The Eye of the Beholder. 7-The Invaders. 6-Escape Clause. 5-The After Hours 4-One For the Angels 3-The Masks 2-Time Enough At Last 1-The Obsolete Man
My 10 are 1. Obsolete man 2 deathshead revisted 3 martians on maple st 4 nothing in the dark 5 walking distance 6 the hitchiker 7 the eye of the beholder 8 minature 9 its a good life 10 the purple testament
My 10 favorite episodes are: 1. Deaths Head Revisited 2. Where is Everybody 3.A Passage for Trumpet 4 The After Hours 5 Third from the sun 6 You Drive 7the 30 fathom grave 8 nightmare at 20000 feet 9 the obsolete man 10 the masks
whats that episode that the guy trades money for a couple of years off a kid. and a broken bone for a cold. and at the end the girl's dad kills him and says he traded his remourse to him last night???
10. The Grave( He'll reach up & grab ya) 9. The New Exhibit( How could you Jack) 8. Death's Head Revisited( Capt. Lutze) 7. The Shelter( Break down that door)
6. You Drive( What's the matter, Ollie?) 5. The Encounter( Taro/ Arthur?) 4. The Obsolete Man(UR an error) 3. It's a Good Life( Bad Man) 2. Eye of the Beholder(UR own kind) 1. The Masks(UR charicatures!)
is this show good sorry im trying to get in to natalgia shows is it a god show becuse im like only 13 and also this is my 4th top ten vid for this show and eye of the beholder is in iut whats so great about the ep plez respond
It is an awesome episode! I am also 13 and the twilight zone is one of my favorite shows. This episode is very popular because the ending is very unexpected (i wont ruin it for you) and there's a lot of meaning about how the world is today in the episode. I reccomend it =-D
My favorites are the ones that really mess with your head - Person or Persons Unknown, A World of Difference, Stopover in a Quiet Town, Five Characters In Search of an Exit, Mirror Image, Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, The After Hours, Perchance to Dream, and The Midnight Sun.
Hey, bro great list!!! man! here's mine. 10) Back There 9) Nick of Time 8) Printers Devil 7) To Serve Man 6) Its a good Life 5) Nightmare at 20,000 ft. 4) The Miniature 3) The New Exhibit 2) After Hours My #1 FAVORITE 'The living Doll' theres so many of em' I love but this the only ones I could think of from my head. My top ten! THANKz!
Twenty Two, The Odyssey Of Flight 33, The Grave, The Midnight Sun, Night Call, The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank, Walking Distance, Elegy, Dead Man's Shoes, The Passerby.
Midnight Sun # 11 , Ceasar and me ? , A game of pool ? , the four of us are dieing ? , the Lonely ? , lots more Kick ass episode's gotta do a top 20 !!!
the eye of the beholder is without a doubt the scariest twilight zone just because of how much creepy and plain weird it is. the ending is always incredibly shocking.
what is the episode about the small town where a man finds himself on accident and can't get out, and when he finally tries theres like...a barrier or something? it's bloody creepy.
I think my favorite is the monsters are due on maple street, but the one with the best twist is 5 characters in search of an exit, cause you will never see it coming.
i did not think that the after hours was that great. they could have came up with a better ending. mirror image creaped me out, so i guess that had to be my fave lol.
the ones ive enjoyed the most are- nightmare at 6,000 feet, and that one were the people put on the masks and the masks become their face. (sorry havent watched alot"
The Passerby (eerie Civil War story) The New Exhibit (modern gothic, unusual for Serling) The Arrival (weird where did everybody go variant) In His Image (bizarre who am I sci-fi) The Grave (is it or isn't it supernatural?) The Jungle (skepticism is a poor defense against the supernatural) Of Late I Think Of Cliffordville (time travel, the devil, nostalgia -this one has it all!) Come Wander With Me (another classic back-woods weird tale)
Thanks for providing me with the name of one of my favorite TZ episodes "Nick of Time". Does anyone know the name of the one with Lois Nettleton as the woman who is suffering from heat and cold?
while certain Alfred Hitchcock (Hour) shows were definitely in the Twilight Zone: "Consider Her Ways" (woman transported to a nightmare future) "The Magic Shop" (boy uses black arts to control + kill others) "Where The Woodbine Twineth" (girl believes her doll is actually real) "Sign of Satan" (Christopher Lee returns from the dead) "The Monkey's Paw - A Retelling" & none of the above used tricks to explain away the supernatural elements. Several 30-min. AH eps also qualify!
Can someone help me here, I believe the best ever twilight zone (Black and white) was one where it ended with a man yelling "Let me out of here! I want to go to the other place! Someone made a mistake! I don't belong here!" and the other gentleman (I guess he was the devil?) had a constant laugh saying "This is the other place...!!!!"
Was that in the top ten? What was the episode name?
I like Mr Denton on Doomsday, A world of Difference, Obsolete Man, Two, The Jeopardy Room, Where is Everybody?, Mind Over Matter, Stop at Wiloughby, The episode where the sun doesn't come up, and they are going to hang that guy, and the episode with George Takai. That would round up my ten best.
Great choices! narrowing it down to ten is hard! Heres mine: 10) The trouble with Templeton 9) Living Doll 8) The Hitchhiker 7) Will the real martian please stand up 6) A world of his own 5) A world of Difference 4) The after houes 3) Elegy 2) A stop at Willoughby 1) Five charactors in search of an exit
Oh, and as far as HUMOR value, seeing Total Broad Joan Blondell and (Uncle Charlie) William Demarest duke it out with fantastically dated slang and hurling breakables in "What's in the Box," ending with his PUNCHING her out a top-story window (shocking for 1964!) is wonderful. He sees the future on the their TV, all forewarnings of his murdering her, which she can't see. "Whaddaya SEE Joe? FAN dancers in YONKERS? FAN dancers? YONKERS YONKERS YONKERS!!" - oh she is a Mad Woman, I adore it.
Oh, the one I NEVER saw all the way through except bits and pieces of as a child, on other people's televisions or in the TV/appliance aisle at Sears, was "Stopover in a Quiet Town." Everything is FAKE, (no wonder I ended up in theater arts!) and there is a fabulous oxymoron I often hear when folks refer to "The Giant Little Girl." I was SO happy when, as an adult some 30 years later, someone FINALLY taped it for me on Beta! Fake bread, fake squirrels, fake TREES, fake cars, I LOVED it ALL!
You might like the episode of The Andy Griffith Show, where Andy tries to get a couple to stop fighting, and then realizes they are far happier when they are able to have their nightly bout, with flying dishes.
Oh, and "Stopover in a Quiet Town" is a great episode. It goes somewhere the first episode, "Where is Everybody" doesn't, and was written by Earl Hamner Junior, who created "The Waltons".
The Twilight Zone marathon is on right now, a tradition on New Year's Eve. The episode on at the moment is "The old man in the cave". This is another one of the post nuclear war genre. James Coburn and John Anderson are excellent. I read thru most of the comments on this message board, and it doesn't look like anyone has it it in their top 10. Just goes to show you how good TZ was, when an episode this good (better than anything I've seen on TV recently) doesn't even make the top 10.
Wow, there's a lot I haven't seen on there. I need to check them out. My two all-time favourites are Five Characters in Search of an Exit and The Howling Man. But they're all pretty awesome.
There are some really best episodes that r missing in your list 1. Stopover in a Quiet Town 2. Five Characters in Search of an Exit 3. The Hitch-Hiker 4. The midnight sun
Yes, KICK THE CAN-should be higher, though! And what about Nothing in the Dark and The Masks? Tell me the charcter of the dying old man in The Masks,Jason, isn't unforgettable!
IMHO the ones you should leave in your top ten list are: Mirror Image, Eye of the Beholder, To Serve Man, and The After Hours. You should include Twenty-Two, A Game of Pool, The Masks, THe Hitchhiker, The Invaders, and the top 2 episodes are a tie:
The Howling Man
The Dummy
I've been watching these episodes for a VERY long time and I think a lot of fans would agree with me. I know we all have different tastes, but I think these are the creepiest.
There is one that i don't remember the name, it's about a man that finds a well and he threw things into the well and he recived something and then he wants to see what's inside of the well and he never comes back again, that one would be my favorite one
the changing of the guard, the howling man, a stop at willoughby, walking distance, third from the sun, the midnight sun, the hitch-hiker, elegy, people are alike all over, back there, twenty-two, static, the obsolete man, five characters in search of an exit, the hunt, hocus-pocus and frisby, i sing the body electric, miniature, from agnes-with love. honestly. what episode isn't good? best show ever. i could keep listing. nice vid btw. :]
I've only seen ''It's a good Life'' and ''Nightmare at 40.000 feet''. wich episode's do you all recommend to see? and what is ''The eye of the beholder'' and ''The silence'' all about?
its about a loud mouth member of a club reluctantly accepting a bet made with a senior member of the club, that if the loud mouth can not utter one word in a contained area for an entire year, the senior member would give him $500,000 ( i think thats the amount). As the year approaches its end, the senior gets more and more desperate to call off the bet, and give the young man only $1000. When the year is finally over, the young man approaches the senior to accept his reward. i wont tell end
"The Silence" is similar to an old story with the same premise, by a famous author, whose name escapes me now. I think it was called simply, "The Bet". That story goes somewhere else entirely, and Serling said he was unaware of the earlier story, when he wrote "The Silence".
My recommendation would be to start with an episode, entitled "The Lonely". It was filmed in Death Valley. I am partial to all the episodes filmed in the desert, as they have inspired me to write a few books, which may never be published. An old country-and-western song, called "The Shifting, Whispering Sands" also inspired my books.
The Arrival, A Game of Pool, The Grave, It's a Good Life, Five Characters in Search of an Exit, The Last Rites or Jeff Myrtlebank, Person or Persons Unknown, Perchance to Dream, The Trade-Ins, On Thursday We Leave for Home, Living Doll, The Old Man in the Cave, Uncle Simon, Number 12 Looks Just Like You, Night Call, Spur of the Moment, The Masks, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Stopover in a Quiet Town, and Mr. Garrity and the Graves. These are probably the episodes worth seeing.
Okay, you all really need to see them all, at least twice. The After Hours, Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?, The Howling Man, Eye of the Beholder, To Serve Man, The Invaders, Valley of the Shadow, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, The Lonely, Where is Everybody?, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, Time Enough At Last, The Hitch-Hiker, Mirror Image, People are Alike All Over, A World of HIs Own, The Lateness of the Hour, The Odyssey of Flight 33, A Hundred Yards Over the Rim, The Obsolete Man
A Stop at Willoughby, Walking Distance, It's a Good Life, Valley of the Shadow, The Bewitching Pool, The Lonely, The Fear, To Serve Man, A Hundred Yards Over The Rim, and Kick the Can
No offense, but I wouldn't put most of these in the top three dozen. But we could always have friendly disagreements about that. Has anyone ever suggested (blasphemy!) the worst-ever Twilight Zone episodes? They'd probably all be from Season 5.
The Mirror Image scared the crap out of me, as did the After Hours and the Living Doll. I guess I don't like the idea of inanimite things that look like humans talking.
How about a similar list for the original Outer Limits?... not nearly as many episodes, so a top 5 would probably cover it. Maybe even a top 3. There are some great episodes, but as Count Floyd would say, there are also some "clinkers". Probably produced by Mrs. Prickley. In any event #1)Demon with the Glass Hand #2) The Chameleon, 3)The Duplicate Man, #4)The 6th Finger, #5) Wolf 359. And the absolute WORST is Behold Eck! Would be better titled - Behold Sucks Ass!
"Walking Distance" and "Night of the Meek" are the Best Episodes in my opinion. The Civil War Episode with Lincoln at the end is also very good. The Inger Stevens episode The Hitch Hiker is a good one also. TV will never match the brilliance of these episodes again.
How about Robert Duvall in the Hour long episode "Miniature" It's not shown very much.
I sure would be interested to see what Serling might say about the moronic and purient level of degeneration, that we find ourselves in. 'Twas a fine ol' age.
I don't agree with the entire list, but it was very cleverly put together, nonetheless. The Masks is an AWESOME ep-- I still think "To serve man" is one of the scariest. "number 12..." is a good one, too.. this is the best show EVER!
I know I should know this. but what is the name of the episode where the old man is dying and he makes four of his greedy relatives put on masks until midnight. and when they take them off their faces are the masks? That's one of my favorites. I just can't think of the name.
6 and 5 are the only good ones in your list. The rest are on my shit list.

My top 5 list:
#1 A stop at willoughby
#2 The hunt
#3 The bewitchin pool
#4 The old man in the cave

There are so many excellent episodes, its really hard to come with a list of the best ones, But my least favorite hands down is "5 charactersin search of an exit" No offense to anyone who likes it, but I just find it boring.

gausster812 2 years ago
I like Mr Denton on Doomsday, A world of Difference, Obsolete Man, Two, The Jeopardy Room, Where is Everybody?, Mind Over Matter, Stop at Wiloughby, The episode where the sun doesn't come up, and they are going to hang that guy, and the episode with George Takai. That would round up my ten best.

CrashingCrockery 3 years ago
You might like the episode of The Andy Griffith Show, where Andy tries to get a couple to stop fighting, and then realizes they are far happier when they are able to have their nightly bout, with flying dishes.
Teflon65 2 years ago
Oh, and "Stopover in a Quiet Town" is a great episode. It goes somewhere the first episode, "Where is Everybody" doesn't, and was written by Earl Hamner Junior, who created "The Waltons".
Teflon65 2 years ago
I see that "To Serve Man" is an all-around fave of everyone's.

The masks got what they deserved!!!!!!!!
dawnrexgurl 3 years ago
IMHO the ones you should leave in your top ten list are: Mirror Image, Eye of the Beholder, To Serve Man, and The After Hours. You should include Twenty-Two, A Game of Pool, The Masks, THe Hitchhiker, The Invaders, and the top 2 episodes are a tie:
The Howling Man
The Dummy
I've been watching these episodes for a VERY long time and I think a lot of fans would agree with me. I know we all have different tastes, but I think these are the creepiest.
GWTW4EVR 3 years ago
What about "The Howling Man"?? That one used to creep us out when we were kids, but we loved it!!!

TO SERVE MAN!!!!OMFG!!!!! THAT ONE IS REAL GOOD!!
There is one that i don't remember the name, it's about a man that finds a well and he threw things into the well and he recived something and then he wants to see what's inside of the well and he never comes back again, that one would be my favorite one
tristramshamdy 3 years ago
Interesting list, but you MUST see "It's a Good Life" and "Five Characters in Search of an Exit."
mjn76 3 years ago 2
the changing of the guard, the howling man, a stop at willoughby, walking distance, third from the sun, the midnight sun, the hitch-hiker, elegy, people are alike all over, back there, twenty-two, static, the obsolete man, five characters in search of an exit, the hunt, hocus-pocus and frisby, i sing the body electric, miniature, from agnes-with love. honestly. what episode isn't good? best show ever. i could keep listing. nice vid btw. :]

Thankyou

"eye of the beholder" has a huge plot twist at the end. don't know which one "the silence" is, so I can't remember if I ever saw it.
proxy044 3 years ago
its about a loud mouth member of a club reluctantly accepting a bet made with a senior member of the club, that if the loud mouth can not utter one word in a contained area for an entire year, the senior member would give him $500,000 ( i think thats the amount). As the year approaches its end, the senior gets more and more desperate to call off the bet, and give the young man only $1000. When the year is finally over, the young man approaches the senior to accept his reward. i wont tell end
FlamingBladesofGlory 3 years ago
"The Silence" is similar to an old story with the same premise, by a famous author, whose name escapes me now. I think it was called simply, "The Bet". That story goes somewhere else entirely, and Serling said he was unaware of the earlier story, when he wrote "The Silence".

My recommendation would be to start with an episode, entitled "The Lonely". It was filmed in Death Valley. I am partial to all the episodes filmed in the desert, as they have inspired me to write a few books, which may never be published. An old country-and-western song, called "The Shifting, Whispering Sands" also inspired my books.

I will have your recommendation in mind... also, would love to know more about your books!

DeMars3, Your List Is Astounding And True. But How About 'It's A Good Life'?
Alienhellisback 3 years ago

The silence had the biggest shocker ending I think. Chills up my spine every time.
Allthose are good eps.
Don't forget Hocus pocus and frisby!!!
And Willoughby!!! Oh ya, ALL OF THEM ARE WONDERFUL EPISODES!!

No offense, but I wouldn't put most of these in the top three dozen. But we could always have friendly disagreements about that. Has anyone ever suggested (blasphemy!) the worst-ever Twilight Zone episodes? They'd probably all be from Season 5.
juggler64 3 years ago
Yeah, The SIlence and The Eye of the Beholder are great. Also, where was The Masks?
Viper19007 3 years ago 3
The masks was amazing and the faces at the end were pretty traumatic to me as a kid. Anyways good suggestion

Would be better titled - Behold Sucks Ass!
billw1220 3 years ago
"Walking Distance" and "Night of the Meek" are the Best Episodes in my opinion. The Civil War Episode with Lincoln at the end is also very good. The Inger Stevens episode The Hitch Hiker is a good one also. TV will never match the brilliance of these episodes again.
How about Robert Duvall in the Hour long episode "Miniature" It's not shown very much.
fiddlerpin 3 years ago
i don't like the number one choice much, I think the Parallel should have been included.. or the submarine one
pretzal702 3 years ago
I sure would be interested to see what Serling might say about the moronic and purient level of degeneration, that we find ourselves in. 'Twas a fine ol' age.

I don't agree with the entire list, but it was very cleverly put together, nonetheless. The Masks is an AWESOME ep-- I still think "To serve man" is one of the scariest. "number 12..." is a good one, too.. this is the best show EVER!
sweetprism00 3 years ago
I know I should know this. but what is the name of the episode where the old man is dying and he makes four of his greedy relatives put on masks until midnight. and when they take them off their faces are the masks? That's one of my favorites. I just can't think of the name.
alleclipsed 3 years ago
The name of that episode is simply "The Masks"
