my gido (ukrainian grandpa) used to shoot mines from the bow of his destroyer with a .303 in WW2. I don't know about you but the nickle for a .303 bullet and my gido using it to me is way more trustworthy than a robot haha.
Hate to say it but the pen/pencil story is a myth, you cant use pencils in space because the pencil shavings/broken leads would float around & get into vital systems, not to mention astronaughts lungs. A normal pen works just fine in space
normal pens need gravity to work to make the ink go down to the tip.
in space you might get the pen to work for 10 or 20 letters and then it will stop since no more ink goes down to the tip
pencil shavings can be reduced by just using a pencil sharpener thats in a little bag (dunno exacly how they are called but i have seen them) and i am pretty sure that a broken lead is just as dangerous as any other kind of debris and you can obviously pick it up.
This shows a little bit the difference between the american and the rest of the world´s ways of thinking...... some time ago.... during the space race, the us astronauts were equipped with a specialy designed ink pen that worked in space.... its research and development costed LOADS of thousands of dollars..... the soviet cosmonauts were given PENCILS instead.
@juanecheyt well my guess would be that since it's data, using pen is ideal as it is permanent and can't be removed as a means to modify data whereas with a pencil, you can easily erase and twist the data.
Scary .... imagine a aircraft carrier with no aircraft but those to seek and destroy or do stupid stunt like drag the mine to the enemy ship and blow them up.
@anton2maa because then you waste several thousand dollars on one mine. you'd need to carry lots of these.
if you bliow it up you risk injuring people and also remember that the fish in the water are extremely sensitive to pressure in the water and can kill a lot of them. its a lot better to just disarm it
@anton2maa cause if let the mine go Kaboom, greenpeace would say that could destroy sea life. If let the mine disarmed, military doctor keeps sending people back to the state in body bag. So they create this thing.... robotic warrior. So if it failed and explode, at least no people were harmed. Cost? Out of the question XD
I like how they showed how it does it's job.
