et un soir sur une radio il y a pas mal de temps j'ai entendu cette chanson chantée dans pleins de versions différentes et de styles différents en Anglais.

The original one was written by Branduardi many years ago in Italian language. I really love that song.

In fact this song is sung in French (by Branduardi) and ENGLISH (by Stivell), all be it with a strong Breton accent. The song originates from a British Broadide Ballad and is based on a true story from Scotland.

stivell has never pretend to be even a "decent" singer. He is a brilliant musician, that's all.

His accent is not breton, but French.

Thank you for the clarification. Folk song has never relied on "vocal perfection". Personally I find Stivell's voice very evocative, whether he is singing in English, Scots, French or any of the celtic tongues.

I don't know if you mean that English and French are celtic tongues along side Scot and Gaelic.

If it is the case then I may correct you. French and English are both germanic languages. They come from the Angles and the Franks.

England means "land of the Angles" and Germans still call France as Frankreich wich means somehow "Frank ruled land".

No I'm not. The celtic languages are Welsh, Breton, Cornish, Manx, Erse (Irish Gaelic) & Scottish Gaelic. Lowland Scots and English are indeed Germanic tongues, but French is a Romance language based on provincial Latin (like Spanish and Italian).
