In fact this song is sung in French (by Branduardi) and ENGLISH (by Stivell), all be it with a strong Breton accent. The song originates from a British Broadide Ballad and is based on a true story from Scotland.
"Father, dear father, you've done to me great harm,
Thank you for the clarification. Folk song has never relied on "vocal perfection". Personally I find Stivell's voice very evocative, whether he is singing in English, Scots, French or any of the celtic tongues.
No I'm not. The celtic languages are Welsh, Breton, Cornish, Manx, Erse (Irish Gaelic) & Scottish Gaelic. Lowland Scots and English are indeed Germanic tongues, but French is a Romance language based on provincial Latin (like Spanish and Italian).
yesterday I was in Seriate (Bg) here in Italy, to listen to the magic of Alan Stivell. He's a peculiar creature, I'm hypnotized to listen to him, his arp and voice... Thank u Alan!
Simplement superbe.

The Trees They Do Grow High .

You've married me to a boy that is too young.
I am twice twelve and he is but forteen.
He's young but daily growing."

stivell has never pretend to be even a "decent" singer. He is a brilliant musician, that's all.
His accent is not breton, but French.

I don't know if you mean that English and French are celtic tongues along side Scot and Gaelic.
If it is the case then I may correct you. French and English are both germanic languages. They come from the Angles and the Franks.
England means "land of the Angles" and Germans still call France as Frankreich wich means somehow "Frank ruled land".
