What I heard is that June wrote this song when she felt for Johnny Cash, both being married to other people. She came from a very religious family and felt she was not up to God's expectations. He was very much in love with her (Pretty much all his life )and being a bad boy at the time decided to make the song a celebration, with a fun spin to it. We almost forget it's really a rather dark song.

Cash heeard her sing it and told her he thought it needed to be faster and have horns and asked if she cared if he recorded it. Anita's version is simply awe inspiring, but I love that high lonesome, melodic mountain church hymnal/foldy sound that she does it in and she has probably the best female singing voice ever.

Johnny Cash has a distinct voice and the song has good lyrics. Adam's version takes it a few steps higher from nearly monotone and good to batting it out of the field. Adam seems as shocking as Elvis was at first.
