Another Ayah of the Quran says "There was for you in the Messenger of Allah the best example for whomsoever seek Allah ad the Hereafter". Notice He didn't say for his companions!! So we are included!! Allah didn't expect of anyone to understand the Book(Quran) on their own, so he send teacher. He protected the Quran, plus its explanation i.e. the prophetic traditions
