  • You are... Awesome! I'm now going to buy this camera!

  • Hey guys those of you that have this camera, how is the screen / lcd on this camera? I have heard that pictures look bit choppy and so does the live view? The newer models t3, t2i have a much higher resolution. I am thinking of buying this camera but had not had a chance to look at the screen so just concerned about the screen resolution?

  • i have had the camera for nearly 2 years now.....have just found live view fml :)

  • The XSi/450D is a perfect Amatuer Camera for those who are learning Exposure/ISO/Aperture and Lighting. Its a great Cam for slowing learning and picking up those elements that create perfect pictures. Even now in 2011 the camera is a great step up from a quality Point & Shot. Once you've mastered the 450D then you can jump up to those really expensive pro cams.

  • I didn't know Mr. Clean was English.

  • Gordon is awesome.

  • should i get the xsi or 7d im a newbie

  • @TinMan7554 Neither. The XSI is outdated. The 7D is too advanced and expensive for a "newbie". I recommend a Canon T1i (500D), Canon T3 (1100D) or even the T2i (550D). They are great started DSLRs

  • @macosftw thanks

  • @macosftw From what I have read, XSI is better than T3 in terms of IQ

  • i ordered this camera today! i am so excited!

  • Does that DSLR Live View - PC computer software come with the camera?

  • hi, i am planning on buying this camera and i am a very young beginner. could anyone recommend a camera bag that will protect the camera and is also relatively

    inexpensive?

  • Where is the AE/AF button you mention at 4:03? I have the Rebel XSi and I looked all over the top right area of the body and couldn't find a button with that label. Thanks.

  • Like your videos I need if the Canon Rebel EOS T1I is a good camera for slide shows cause I make slide shows. Would be helpful.

    Thanks

  • My 450d, when in Live Mode, doesn't autofocus at all, (lens switched to AF, and working in other scenarios); what should I do ?

  • Awesome tutorial

  • Canon has to have the most annoying shutter sounds (at least on their consumer level models). Sounds like a mouse is sneezing in there lol.

  • @ABSjazz yeah I hate the 450d shutter sound, saving up for a 7d, at least then my ears wont bleed everytime I take a pic.

  • great toutorial! thank you!

  • can you film with this??

  • can you film with thi

  • shouldn't you turn the camera off before taking the card out?

  • Can you buy a separate flash for this model?

  • mac ur head is SHINY BALD. that's a compliment by the way

  • I love your videos so much :) They gave me a lot of tips and tricks how to make awesome pictures and effects. I've been saving for about 4 Months and now I bought a 450D. I wouldve bought a later model but I'm in love with the 450D for some reason. :D

  • Ahh i forgot to ask: why u dont make hd videos?

  • I'v just ordered this camera:D

  • hey Gordon i checked an online retailer to look at the 450D's price in euro, now the problem is that they don't sell this model any longer, is there a replacement coming?

  • Thanks! I like the way you explain everything simply so its very easy to understand.

Can my rebel xsi wirelessly trigger my canon 430 ex ll flash off camera?

    Thanks

  • If you had to choose wich one is better? The canon xsi? Or the Nikon d5000?? I am really into Photography and i want a good camera for christmas.. What do you think?

  • Gordon ! Should i get the Nikon D3000 or the Canon XSi ? In terms of picture quality and camera response ? Thanks !

  • when i have the live view in quick mode i have to focus it by pressing the zoom out button. why?

  • hey gordon, just a quick question. here in holland the 1000d+18-55mm costs 400 euro's. i just found a deal for a 450d(very hard to find in holland and if you do the body costs 430euro's.)+18-55mm(85 euro) and a 70-300mm(215 euro) for 500 euro. would this be a good deal for a first camera if i want to do some nature photography?

  • @cookiepwnsU waar?? ik wil hem ook graag kopen ;p

  • @Anne22ist ik stuur je zo de link via private message

  • there is a sound , when I captured or pressing shutter button...this for what?

    I am a new one!!!

  • Nice review! This will help.

  • Have the 450d and the Rebel XSi the same functions? or is it some difference?

    Plz answer!

  • Have the 450d and the Rebel XSi the same functions? or is it some difference?

    Plz answer!

  • Hi Gordon,

I'm a beginning videographer and photographer. I am trying to choose my first DSLR, and I've looked at countless cameras, Nikon to Pentax to Olympus. All of the main manufacturers.

Unfortunately I've always been one to be horrible at choosing.

After considering it, I've decided I don't need anything like the 7D at the moment, likely not even the T2i.

I already have two video cameras.

This seems like an excellent choice for me, as I can get a good budget deal for it.

  • ahhh i think it's very hard to use>:(

  • Hello! Great review! I was just wondering, does the canon 1000d's live view functions work exactly like the 450d?

  • Some people seem to be under the impression that the inclusion of the Live View feature will enable them to use the XSi/450D as they do point-and-shoot digital cameras, to compose their shots. That is not the case. You can't really make a functioning use of the Live View feature unless the camera's securely mounted on a tripod or on a flat surface. Both Live View focusing modes, while precise, are too slow to be used for hand-held shooting.

  • is it still available in the market?

  • Gordon, i only need 2% of your experience :)

than i'll be the best between my friends!

  • Got this camera (clean 2nd hand) about a couple of days ago, have been experimenting with it so far and gotta say its fantastic... Haven't had any other dSLR previously so can't compare with older or newer cameras but this has all I need (and probably much more) for kicking off digital slr photography.. if you can get a second hand in good condition, I think this will be a much better option than new 1000d

  • @armsoo - true! just got a clean copy 450d from a friend few months back.

really really better coice than the 1000d

  • Thanks to your videos and web site, I know now what model to buy. I was hesitating between the EOS 450D and the D5000. I'll buy the EOS. Thank you. It was very helpful.

  • I am deciding between the 450D and the 1000D for my first DSLR, I have watched your videos and read your reviews, they are very good and comprehensive,

  • @ShakyUK PLEASE believe me.. Buy the 450D and leave the 1000D alone. You will be VERY unhappy with the 1000D.

  • @matsui2001 I bought a 450D yesterday, it should arrive Wednesday... I can't wait! Hopefully I'll be experimenting for the next few weeks.

Cheers for the advice though mate, I appreciate it. :)

  • Hey Gordon, nice reviews u doin there! I just have a question, and that is what does the depth of field button exactely do?? Thats the only button i'd never understood before under these years, thank you for you're time!

  • wow i see the radiation is still affecting people over in russia...

  • I think I am going to get this camra because of the live view on the computer, it sounds sooo cool!

  • thank you for such interesting review)))

  • If the monochrome is black and white, then how do you use the filter effects? In the instruction manual it gives specific uses for the filters but all I can ever get is black and white and can't tell any difference. Help.

  • Very thorough review

  • One of the best reviews I've seen. Very detailed, quick, and efficient.. you really know your camera

  • I'm from Paris and have just bought it ! I love it and this video too. Thanks for it !

  • Dear cameralabs video creator.

I have a hard time trying to understand what the actual difference between a normal 450D and the Rebel version is.

    Could you explain the difference?

  • @Dutch3DMaster I think the 450D is called Rebel XSi in America, and that's about all the difference there is.

  • @Juanpasaenz : Hmm ok, lol. Thanks for explaining :).

  • Can someone show me where the "AFAE" button is. The one that you use during auto focus while on screen display. I literally cannot find it anywhere. Either that or the button i'm pressing isn't working. Please help! PS I know he said top right. And I don't see it in the top right corner.

  • @SlashIsGod619 : If you have the camera in your hand it's the left button of the two at the top right corner of the camera.

At the top of the camera it is marked with an asterisk like symbol.

If it doesn't work check if you have enabled AF in Live View mode in Personal Settings (first entry on the last yellow Menu tab.)

It's the 8th Personal Entry that says "Auto Focus/Drive" and gives you three options: Disabled, Quick mode, Live Mode.

    Hope that helps you :).

  • Thank you Gordon!

In my opinion the best camera reviewer on YouTube! ;-)

  • Useful review, i specifically wanted to know what the difference was between the 400d - which I have and the 450, which I've been offered for a very cheap price with all the original kit.

    Thanks..

  • Just picked up this camera last week on clearance at Sears for $320 (the entire kit!) and am very happy with it, but still have a lot to learn, thanks for your videos.

  • hello. i like very much to take photos. at this moment i have canon powershot a590, but my parents will buy me better photocamera. what do You think what camera is better for 14 years old, whos hobby is taking photos(more macrophotos) - Nikon d5000 or Canon 450d? thanks

  • If you're looking to buy a dslr, then please check out the Samsung NX10. SAMSUNG NX10!!!!!

  • Thanks for the well done review. I'm sold!

  • Is it worth buying this model slightly used (a few months old) and saving some cash? What should I look for regarding condition (how can I tell if its been wet, dropped...)

    Thanks

  • is there a video option on this camera?

  • I had a Nikon d3000 and i want an upgrade. I am between 450d and Nikon D90, but D90 is really expensive. I don´t care about the video mode, what i mostly care about is the image quality... Would you recomend d90?

  • Comment removed

  • Gordon you should review the p100. =)

  • @leomendoza123 nikon need to send me one first!

  • @cameralabs I had a Nikon d3000 and i want an upgrade. I am between 450d and Nikon D90, but D90 is really expensive. I don´t care about the video mode, what i mostly care about is the image quality... Would you recomend d90?

  • @leomendoza123 I have that camera :D

  • You've sold me on this camera, thanks!

  • Well that was clear as mud for me. I just bought this camera and now I'm more confused than before.

  • i know this sounds really stupid 0.0, in the life veiw do i allways see the chip?

  • wich one is better, canon eos 450d or sony alpha a380? help me please

  • Gordan,I think you should re-review the 400D. Put a lil more detail and samples with it. :) Thanks!

  • @universalmind38 Considering it's no longer for sale, there'd be no point. My latest videos take around one week to film and edit, so I'd need to be paid for one week's work to justify it. There's plenty of detail in my review at cameralabs . com if you're interested.

  • How much eos 450 in singapore?????????

  • "takes several seconds" , time it with a watch , mkay !

  • inside every single rebel camera, there's a little squeaky toy, that gets squeezed when you push the shutter button, hence the "rebel squeak" lol

  • I love the color accent feature =) It's sad that 550d do not have the feature :( So im saving 7D for my upgrade instead 550d

  • how much is it?

  • when you are taking a picture, do you have too look in the hole,

or is it like a digital camera and yo can see it on the screen, im getting it on air mile andi dont want to get it if i have to look in the hole all the time

  • this camera has the ability to show you a live moving picure on the screen

  • @paigeashleey

    gotta look in hole!

  • I got the 450D recently. So far I have experience with SLRs, so I wasn't aware of many of the functions digital bodies have. This video was very useful :)

  • would you recommend this to amateurs ?

  • i got the 450D now and i got a real problem.I really need this fast shooting as schown in the video but i dont know wich mode or option i have to choose. Can anyone tell me how i can get this fast shooting as shown in the video please? Thanks a lot.

  • @posteri007 read the continuous shooting section in your manual...

  • Could you do a video of a comparison of Nikon and a Canon please like the same spec just I dont know what to buy a Nikon or a Canon

  • sir, which is better canon 450d or nikon d5000?

  • Thanks for all the informative videos and the great website. I've been doing research for the last two weeks, and greatly due to your reviews, I've purchased my first real camera, and first DSLR, the Rebel XSi today. Thanks and keep up the good work, I love your website.

  • this is my first DSLR, il have it in june 2010

  • What would I do without camera labs? Can't wait to get this as my first DSLR.

  • can it take videos?

  • @greivinrojas506 Only 500D and more expensive models has that equipped.

  • heyy

im a beginner and i want to buy a DSLR cam.

Chose cam is better for me : EOS 450D, EOS 500D, EOS 550D

    thanks bye ^^

  • hey, you have great videos!, very insightful!!! but i was wondering what camera do you use to film these?? thank you.

  • Thanks! Check my channel page for camera info...

  • I'm stuck between this and the xs. But since the Xsi is only $60 more I'm more inclined to get the xsi. Any thoughts? And what in your opinion are a few must have lenses for this camera?

  • I brought a 1000D (Xs) which was great, but it then developed a fault and I sent it back for repairs. I upgraded to a 450D (XSi) and whilst I think the Xs is great and was a fantastic camera for me, I feel that the slightly better AF system and converters along with spot metering and a better grip make it money worth spending. I've never looked back!

  • dude, go for the XSi. the $60 for the face sensor is worth it alone XD not to mention the bigger screen. I'm debating between the two myself and if it were only $60, there would be no debate

  • I wonder why the north American version changed it to XSi ... ?

  • got it yesterday amazing camera :P

  • I bought this camera half year ago and I am very happy. Image quality is good, but I should buy new lens.

  • I wish these ppl commenting negatively on my videos actually took a look at the detailed reviews I always provide to go with them at cameralabs . com. You'll find loads of results, sample images and analysis.

  • a month ago I have this camera, the Canon EOS 450D, and I'm not happy with it because it makes some pictures without color, without saturation, color without texture. and use the Canon EF 300 mm f: 4 L IS USM, and do not use the zoom which brings riduculo hit, because not even buy it. You both understamding Cams? I could say that my Canon EOS 450D produces images without color white? Thank you.

  • Maybe a defect. I got one for my wife. I am a photographer and have a bag of lenses. The one I used to test this camera was a 50mm 1.4 and did some headshots with a 5800EXII on camera on ettl and the images are very rich. I don't see color or lack of color issues with it.

  • THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT

  • @AZOROJO

Are you shooting on automatic or manual settings?

Also, did you try to play with your settings? White balance, exposure settings, etc?

  • @r31ncarnat3d Well, I always work with aperture priority, because I use long focal length lenses or wide angle and I control the opening and produndidad field. In the white balance I've used in manual and also in automatic, and I'm starting to set the color saturation and other parameters through a function that brings specified for this

  • nikon d60 much better

  • How is it "Better"? By what criteria?

At the entry-level stage, many of the differences between different models are moot. It's generally down to lenses used and ergonomics of the body.

  • why don't these shoot video??

  • cause it's a older model. Look for the Canon EOS 500D. It's a newer version.

  • which one??

    Nikon 5000D

    or

    Sony A500

  • Does anyone know, if the 450D has a Date stamp option that will appear on the corner of each photo when printed. I know it embeds it in the file, but I want it on the photo itself. Thanks

  • Thank you.....

  • hi, can anyone help me: on canons website it says the 450d has an auto-iso of 100-400, but the 1000d has 100-800. i know on both u can manually go higher but surely thats a big problem with the 450d for it not to go automatically to 800?? also whats the auto ISO of the d3000. thhhhaaaankkks

  • Hi Monkey ! I got the EOS 450D and i tested it. I leaved the Objective cab on my camera and the auto ISO went up to 800 ! So i aint got any problems with that.

  • @ShizzlaNo1 thanx buddy!!!, but can i ask, whats the objective cab?

  • my fault, my english ain't that perfect. I think there is no meaning for "objective cab" in english :-). Of course.... Lens cap.

  • Some people say that having the Live View is stupid for an slr, but i think its a really good idea. I like having the option.

  • @MrJacobFennell

Live View is a great feature to have just in case you need it for some reason. I thought I would be using it a lot but in fact I've hardly ever used Live View lol

  • yup, especially if you find hard seeing through the viewfinder even if you max out the diopter thing... Lv also enables more radical compositions. the dusadvantage however is that Lv eats battery power like a gas-guzzling sportscar. lol better have a back up battery...

  • very helpful! thank you! =)

  • Someone help please? I'm trying to copy what he does at 3:50 but i'm encountering problems.

    1. I dont have the two 'squares' that he has on the live view, only one,why is this?

    2. he says to press the AE AF button in the top right of the body, I press the AE button and nothing happens? As for the AF button, the only one i can find is on the lens itself, which is switched on? This is frustrating as it stays out of focus, please help cameralabs?

  • you have to get into custom function (C. Fn) to do some setting first. Going to Custom Function (C. Fn) select Function 8 (auto focus) and turn on the mode by choosing one of them 1. is the quick mode which will do the same thing he showed at 3:50. Choosing 2 will do what he showed after 6:30

  • does it take HD videos? jus curious!

  • @brokenchopstickz NO..but the T1i does which is the next one up

  • no, but you can make some kinda "hack" where you just get the live view @ the Computer and then you can record it. It's not HD but very good quality.

  • this is part was very helpful 3:35 about the live view thanks!

  • wheres the auto focus button? i can't find it?

  • @humberto0984646

The Auto Focus button you will find in the lens with two settings namely AF/MF

    AF - Auto

    MF - Manual

  • why would these great entry-level dslrs be named differently in some places? why "rebel X---"? wouldn't it be great to just call these cameras by their well-known "---D" names?

  • I agree, it is annoying. I think they do it for the very popular models to identify their country of origin. So if you're in the UK and you see an XSi for sale, you know it's an import.

  • yeah, and physically, if we take a good look at the "rebel" sticker in the camera body, it kinda destroys the already great and simple aesthetics of the camera.

  • Hi Gordon I have recently bought this camera and it is fantastic for what I want.

However I have noticed that when I turn the zoom ring of the 18-55mm IS Kit lens it makes a mild grinding noise presumably because of trapped dust.

I was wondering whether you know of any way I can get it out without, rather than having to send it away to Canon.

  • mine does that too, its just part of having a cheap lens... Not smooth..

  • @tehDL

Does yours make the dusty sound too. Do you think its actually dust or just something with the seal or something?

  • It sort of makes a dry scraping noise, its just a crappy mechanism. Try an expensive lens out and you'll feel the difference.

  • @tehDL I wiil dude, thanks for advice.

  • Gordon,

    XSi or Nikon D3000?

I don't care too much about live view

  • Comment removed

  • your reviews are the absolute best

  • Hey im going to whistler BC and im going skiing there :D i jst got this camera foir christmas and its amazing so i was wondering how am i going to get the best skiing and landscape photos with the XSI? thanks :)

  • Thank you for your help! You undoubtedly saved me much time and money, not to mention your website is extremely clean and straight forward, Kudos to you brother!

  • I am choosing either between the Nikon D5000 or the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, there are few differences but the deiifereneces that they have are really good things. im not sure which one and i HAVE to chose today because its for christmas and i need my choice.
