Really, Big Band Music was so good because you have 20 or more musicians performing at the same time, today this is no longer possible due to high costs, and also be cause TV and recording firms have designed musical products for masses without any good taste
Note the High Fidelity Sound of this ORIGINAL Radio Transcription Recording from 1944 using 16 inch discs of Vinyl,Wideband HiFi Cutter Heads, and Ribbon Velocity Microphones giving a 30-15,000 hz flat frequency response and VERY HIGH S/N Ratio. All this preserved the FINEST & Largest Swing Orchestra EVER!! That of Major Glenn Miller's American Band of the AEF during W.W.II.
Wonderful video and music and love the poem in the middle..... maybe you could just print that? Would love to have it, or tell me who wrote it. Was it you? love it !
The arranger was Jerry Gray, which was part of the Miller's 1944 AAF Band. Lead altoist Hank Freeman and trumpeter Bernie Privin were formerly Shaw's section men, then joined the Miller organization.
I absolutely love this tune!!!!! But WHAT the devil is a "beguine"?? Gosh, I just love this. I can imagine dancing this in a smoky ballroom during WW11, in a black gown. Damn, I just love this.
Very good, as it should be, but Artie Shaw was probably the definitive version. On this side of the pond, Joe Loss recorded it in 1939 with Chick Henderson doing a marathon vocal. All in one take! now! THEY were professionals and a bit.
Wonderful video. I had the pleasure of seeing the current Glenn Miller Orchestra this past May . . . my most favorite concert EVER ! The place was sold out !!! I would encourage everyone who is a fan of Glenn Miller / or big band music, to catch their show if possible . . . a memorable experience !
@MsMaggieAnne Where is it...? I'm a GM fan, since I was a kid, and now with 77 years old, I still playing his eternal music, now on CDs, I keep the LPs.
Let me know where is that Show. As a retired man, now I live in Florida.
Waitinf for answers.....I can't affor to miss that show, before is too late for me.
The Beguine, what is or was it? It is a dance similar to a slow rumba that was very modestly popular in the 1930's. It came from the islands of Guadelpupe and Martinique, the Martinique beguine is a slow, close dance with a roll of the hips. This song was featured in the 2008 movie "Australia."
ive lived through rock and roll,,beatles,,rthymn and blues,,disco,,new wave ,metal ,hard rock,,,rap,,gangsta rap,,,etc,,its all bullshit,,,40,s swing was and is the best,,,,,
congratulations, this is a great video and the music sounds very good. This song likes me very much een though I am much younger. Beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
When I listen to this, I hear where Ray Conniff drew part of his style from the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The same swing and bounce, and playing the notes loud and then immediately becoming softer.
I've created over 220 playlists with 3000 songs for those who love this type of music. ¨Es possible veer, no?
This is Miller's USAAF band; his civilian group never had strings or french horns. Note that the opening bars pays tribute to Artie Shaw's landmark recording of five years earlier.
thanks for this super post--I like the Miller arrangement as well as Shaw's--What wonderful music--reminds me of a time when our country was still great!!!

This is my favourite piece. Artie Shaw did it better, but this is still miles ahead of the nonsense that's 'popular' today.

This was the greatest generation of music ever. Big band music was fantastic.

This is what, and who, "The Greatest Generation" listened to... small wonder they were the greatest.

Oh yeah, these songs from the big bands in the 1930's and 1940's were fantastic. Those bands played some great dance music.

I prefer Artie Shaw's take on this song - which is not put down Miller (no one can do that).
