The real solution to the commercial fishing problem is to farm fish. We have cattle, pigs, etc. for food so why not do the same with fish? This way there will still be fish in the ocean which people (like myself) can catch recreationally, and we would still have our food. Simply stopping isn't the answer, farming is.

These vessels are not overfishing. They are just efficient enough to reach their quotas in a more timely manner. The limits set by fisheries biologist take these ships into account. They look at population doubling time, fecundity, etc. and set limits accordingly. Most Tuna stocks are very healthy and are in no danger of being over fished

@AUSM92 To correct you, most of our lives we've worked for large multi-national commercial interests and have seen the effects of poor policy decisions & large scale commercial overfishing first hand. The best example in recent times I witnessed was the decimation of Orange Roughy as a commercially viable fish stock in NZ to satisfy the massive export market. Contrary to what you suggest, the damage is not done by 'Ma & Pa' outfits but by the big boys chasing big money as was the case here.

The real solution to the commercial fishing problem is to farm fish. We have cattle, pigs, etc. for food so why not do the same with fish? This way there will still be fish in the ocean which people (like myself) can catch recreationally, and we would still have our food. Simply stopping isn't the answer, farming is.

These vessels are not overfishing. They are just efficient enough to reach their quotas in a more timely manner. The limits set by fisheries biologist take these ships into account. They look at population doubling time, fecundity, etc. and set limits accordingly. Most Tuna stocks are very healthy and are in no danger of being over fished

I'm not a hippy, I'm not a vegetarian either. However, this is just a mild eye opener to what is really going on in our oceans. The way we are fishing our oceans is deadlly, our greed and ignorance to maintaining a sustainable source of species in our oceans will decimate populations of fish within a blink of an eye. To name a few: Atlantic Cod, Bluefin Tuna, Halibut, Swordfish and Sturgeon. Try Talapia or Skipjack tuna instead, It's a similar taste and sustainable. THINK, it does not hurt.

Instead of worrying about the amount of food taken from the oceans, you should be thinking about how you can stop people from breeding like rats. - If current trends continue large numbers of fish species will collapse.

@failurbanik Exactly, i'm also all for fishing tuna, but it has to be done sustainably. Our current rates of consumption exceed that so we need to get it down to at least replacement rate.
I think one of the problems is tinned tuna, its so damn cheap, when really we are eating a top predator, a fish which can grow to 400+kg In shopping-centres its sometimes bellow $1 a can.
I guess the industry needs more scientific consultation in regards to acceptable catch rates!

@AUSM92 To correct you, most of our lives we've worked for large multi-national commercial interests and have seen the effects of poor policy decisions & large scale commercial overfishing first hand. The best example in recent times I witnessed was the decimation of Orange Roughy as a commercially viable fish stock in NZ to satisfy the massive export market. Contrary to what you suggest, the damage is not done by 'Ma & Pa' outfits but by the big boys chasing big money as was the case here.

There's simply too much money to be made right now and no doubt this stock is under huge pressure. All we need to do is look at the examples set in the Atlantic to see what can happen. However, if Greenpeace had their way we would see an end to all commercial fishing and that is not the answer either.
