@fordude60 Then you can answer my question perhaps. I know JR came in and helped Barnaby solve cases...but did Betty eventually begin to help on cases also? I remember Barnaby taught her how to do A LOT in the beginning. Also, was JR his grandson or his nephew? I forget now. It's a shame you can only get season 1 so far.
I tell you.And I don't care how many I offend.Today's crap doesn't compare to QM productions.from the opening,"A QM production" all the way to the epilog, yes they were very educational.I've got both my hands raised.
This was one of the few main titles for Jerry Goldsmith got residuals (his film music career was in a slight decline when he composed this, even though he had little regard for the show. Who cares? It's only money!)
one of the guest stars in the intro here is Bill Ballance. It's the same Bill Ballance who was involved with Dr. Laura in the 70s and in the Dr. Laura scandal concerning her nude photographs. He's the guy who sold the pictures and had them put on the internet. Ballance died in 2004.
Besides the basics, I want to see some BJ episodes, or clips when Jones is in action or is apprehending criminals. I want to see how he does it. Thanks.
I totally agree. "Barnaby Jones" was a quality program on television. Watching "The Simpsons" would be a total waste on television; furthermore, they have overstayed their welcome.
Guest Starring: Some guy you never heard of. Also starring: This guy you might have seen on Star Trek. Special Guest Star: the Producer's current girlfrind. Tonight's episode: A Tisket, A Tasket, A Basket Full of MURDER.
i heard Buddy on the radio explaining that it was in his contract that Barnaby Jones could only fire one shot within an entire episode because he wanted to focus on well written scripts not just violence
One of the best TV theme songs ever, and a very underrated series, Buddy Ebsen was brilliant as "Barnaby Jones", I wish that whoever has home video rights to all of QM's productions would release them post haste, there's still a QM gem along with "Barnaby Jones" that has yet to be placed on DVD, & if they don't , that in itself would be a crime, I'm speaking of "Dan August", starred Burt Reynolds - Awesome show, like all of Quinn Martin's programs.
Actually, Goldsmith hated the show. Check out the interview Jerry Goldsmith gave to the Archive of American Television (the TVLEGENDS channel on YouTube). Unless I'm mistaken, Goldsmith wrote the theme as a throwaway, not knowing that the show he despised would last 8 seasons.
It's long overdue to release Barnaby Jones on DVD.!! When will the major studios realize that there is a market for these shows.I haven't seen Barnaby Jones in over 25 years, So PLEASE RELEASE ON DVD.!
I never saw it but this opening theme song is awesome. The Streets of San Fransisco theme song is better though IMHO. Both are Quinn Martin Productions!
another classic from the theme master Jerry Goldsmith! Barnaby Jones, Dr. Kildare, Room 222, Man from Uncle, Police Story, The Waltons and Star Trek Voyager! I probably missed a few :o)
I love my brother bob...we are so close when i was growing up..i would not trade my child hood for anything...i love my brother bob..more than anything in this world...BOB..I LOVE YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING YOU ARE MY BROTHER AND MY BEST FRIEND..I COULD NEVER HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER FRIEND OR BROTHER...I ALWAYS FELT SAFE WHEN YOU WERE SLEEPING BY MY SIDE...I LOVE YOU MY BROTHER MY BEST FRIEND IN THE WORLD...I LOVE YOU BOB
This isn't from season four! It's a 1975 episode and the show premiered in like '73. A girl from the vampire Dark Shadows named Kathy Cody appeared on Barnaby Jones and she may have violently sacred Buddy Ebsen. Mclean Stevenson (of Mash) was deathly afraid of Conrad Bain (also of Dark Shadows) when they did tv together so its possible Ebsen feared Cody. IMDB board on Stevenson reveals this about his fear of Bain!

Marsha's got a rod? LOL, I just had to say it, great opening song, best part of the show like most of the crime stuff from those days. I don't even watch the stuff from today (CSI and it's spin offs and others), I'm not into all that violence and real effects.
loved this show as a kid. It came on Sunday nights on CBS. When ever Bubby Ebsen went into a bar to investigate, the bartender would ask him, "What would you like to drink", and Buddy would always say, "Give me a glass of milk". LOL, Cool.. Great show
Lee Merriweather, as reigning Miss America, was a guest judge at the 1955 Miss North Carolina pageant, along with Hopalong Cassidy. My mom was Miss High Point that year but did not make it to the finals.
In hindsight it's clear "Barnaby Jones" was CBS's way of making up to Buddy Ebsen for canceling "Beverly Hillbillies" in their rural-series purge of 1970, even though it still was a top-10 show. Ebsen had a series on CBS for something like 16 of 18 seasons.
DesiluTrek - I saw an interview with the daughter of the creator of "Petticoat Junction" on TVland last year. The way she described it, "Every show on the CBS schedule that had a tree was cancelled." Sounds like CBS did away with all shows of that nature - I.e. - Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, etc.
Yes, William Paley and CBS grew tired of all of their "rural" series -- they didn't like the image those shows were casting on the "Tiffany" network, as CBS was known in those days. That was the arrogance of being No. 1 for years in an era of just a few viewing options. "Hee Haw" was another CBS show that was axed, but was a success for years afterward as a syndicated show.
I agree. Also remember that at that time competitor ABC was a third place network willing to take chances with groundbreaking shows like Room 222 (multi-racial cast with black male actor getting top billing) and even the Brady Bunch (comedic look at TV's first blended family). ABC was having some success and CBS probably saw the writing on the proverbial wall.
That's the way it was in the '60s and '70s. Every detective had a gimmick. Barnaby Jones was a senior citizen. Jim Rockford was an ex con who was pardoned. Cannon was overweight. Ironside was in a wheelchair. Longstreet was blind. Etc. Etc. Etc.
I've been hooked since I saw this show on reruns on a independent station here in LA (ch56)in the summer of 95. When i saw that 73 LTD in a early episode i was like WOW! now on my third 73/74LTD.-I think my parents having a74 did it- as th e show moved on Ford hooked it up every year(i'll excuse that downsized 79 body) thanks buddy..
Surely you are being ageist? Barnaby was a very fit man for his age. After all, he came from hardy mountain stock before he moved to Beverly Hills, and he was also a fine dancer in his day. That's why he could chase down athletic guys in their twenties! And he was a fine shot into the bargain.
Granted, Hagman would not be JR for about another 20 minutes, and I guess his career was waning. But his starring role in I Dream of Jeanie had made him a household name. Who the heck was "special guest star" Marsha Rod? BTW, did you get a load of that sh*t-eating grin on Jones's face in that opening sequence? Hilarious!
Detectives at that time used to have various gimmicks, the disabled (Ironside), the supposedly dopey (Colombo) etc. I suppose Barnaby Jones was 'The Elderly Detective'? Go, Barnaby, Go! (as another comment notes, Barnaby used to chase down athletic criminals in their 20's!)
LOL. He was a deadly shot, too. The young criminal with perfect vision would shoot and miss, then Barnaby, with his 80 year old eyes, would drill him.
I also loved the opening sequences of those Quinn Martin Productions, typically showing the stars and guest stars posing awkwardly for the camera like test shots, and not clips actually taken from the action.
Super-producer Quinn Martin liked all of his shows to have this distinct opening sequence. I liked it. Yes, some of the shots were taken from the actual episode. Notice the theme music arrangement was changed from season to season and the last 2 seasons, the 3 stars "posed" for their credit picture. Seemingly looking at the camera, etc. Mark Shera had just left the cancelled "SWAT" on ABC.
How I loved that theme music - it always seemed poignant somehow to me. I was surprised to discover that composer Jerry Goldsmith himself apparently was not too keen on it. It was however a great theme for such a mediocre series.
This is the faster version of the theme song that aired from 1973 to 1976. From 1976 to 1980 the slower version of the theme song aired. Thanks for uploading this as I have been waiting for the faster theme song of Barnaby Jones.
Wow, Lee Meriwether had a serious case of helmet-head here. She must have used two whole canse of Aqua-Net...Devoted couch potatoes may recognize Marcia Rodd as the single mother who dumped her six-year old son on the Bunkers' doorstep in a 1971 "All in the Family".
Marcia Rodd also played the Adrienne Barbeau role in the pilot for "Maude". And she later returned to Norman Lear-land as a realtor who was trying to sell Archie a condo after Edith's death. Marcia was actually quite in-demand for TV guest roles during the 70s - hence the "special guest star" credit.
Yes, I remember Marcia also playing the "Carol" role in the "Maude" pilot. I didn't know about her being on a later "All in the Family", but then I stopped watching AITF after they killed Edith off.
I'm having some difficulty accepting Marcia Rodd as a "Special Gudest Star" when Larry Hagman is only a mere "Guest Star" I understand this Barnaby Jones appearance was pre-JR Ewing, but he was pretty much on the A list from I Dream Of Jeannie. What is the specific criteria needed to be a "Special Guest Star?"
Larry Hagman also appeared on other series as guest stars during the 1970's. Columbo, McMillan & Wife, McCloud, Streets Of San Francisco, Police Story etc.
Who's the better actor? That's subjective. And as far as who's prettier? Yes, it is Marcia Rodd...but not by much. Now, Shelly Ackerman! That's one hot babe!
ah you may be right. but for some reason i can't explain, im digging marsha right now, but leslie not shelly is looking damn good! it be cool if pimannix would post the fatal witness episode so we could get more looks at marsha and leslie when they were young.
Not many remember the TV series "Hawkins" with the great James Stewart. He was a country lawyer who always wanted a glass of cold milk before doing his trial work. Part of CBS's attempt at rotating series. Anne Meara was opposite Hawkins as Kate McShane.
..also composed by Jerry Goldsmith. The theme you're referring to is on the Film Score Monthly Silver Age Classics C.D. "Hawkins/Winter Kill/Babe". Check out the Screen Archives Entertainment website.
Special Guest Star-Marcia Who? She must of had a good agent to have top billing over Larry Hagman.

I agree on both counts. The theme music and the opening credits hooked me into the show even though the show itself was not very good.

What is the specific criteria needed to be a "Special Guest Star?"
jimyjam99 4 years ago
Larry Hagman also appeared on other series as guest stars during the 1970's. Columbo, McMillan & Wife, McCloud, Streets Of San Francisco, Police Story etc.

Was he ever a "Special Guest Star"?
jimyjam99 3 years ago
the reason marsha rodd got special guest star is because she's a better actor and she's prettier than larry hagman
bjroberts65 3 years ago
Who's the better actor? That's subjective. And as far as who's prettier? Yes, it is Marcia Rodd...but not by much. Now, Shelly Ackerman! That's one hot babe!
jimyjam99 3 years ago
ah you may be right. but for some reason i can't explain, im digging marsha right now, but leslie not shelly is looking damn good! it be cool if pimannix would post the fatal witness episode so we could get more looks at marsha and leslie when they were young.

I wonder if Jones shot the gun out of J.R.'s hand at the end of this episode.

Does anybody remember the show, "Hawkins", starring Jimmy Stewart and Strother Martin? If so, Does anybody have a copy of the opening theme song?
lightning95sc 4 years ago
Not many remember the TV series "Hawkins" with the great James Stewart. He was a country lawyer who always wanted a glass of cold milk before doing his trial work. Part of CBS's attempt at rotating series. Anne Meara was opposite Hawkins as Kate McShane.

..also composed by Jerry Goldsmith. The theme you're referring to is on the Film Score Monthly Silver Age Classics C.D. "Hawkins/Winter Kill/Babe". Check out the Screen Archives Entertainment website.
