Visors definitely should NOT be mandatory. That's just ridiculous. Freak accidents happen, and it's unfortunate, but that doesn't warrant a league mandate on an equipment change in this situation. Players know the risks and just have to hope that everyone else does their best to control their stick. Gotta feel for Berard though. One: the "producer" of this video sort of made it seem like the "intense action" in this "crucial game" somehow had something to do with this accident -- like it was a cheap shot or something. I was at this game. My Father and I were given tickets to two Leafs games in Ottawa for Christmas that year. We were about 5 rows back from ice level in the visiting team's corner. Amazing seats.

Because of our seats being at the opposite end of the ice, all we saw was Berard drop to the ice. When he got up, there was a huge pool of blood. So much so that it looked black, not red.

We live an hour away from Ottawa. We didn't know what happened until we got home and watch the sports highlights.
