It's a shame that Berard was playing arguably his best hockey while a Maple Leaf...He was starting to silence many of his critics with better 2-way play, and a greater awareness in his own end of the ice...Toronto had big plans for Berard.
i think the eye injury with blood was a lot more disgusting than clint malarchuk's neck injury with lots of gore. hope berard is fine in these days too. sad thing to happen.
Great video.Bryan Berard was a very talented defenseman. He was beloved by Toronto fans.He was not only a great player who played with respect for other players and the game. But obviously a great person with a lot of heart. It shows how much passion, determination and perseverance he had to keep playing hockey. He underent seven operations and was fitted with a special contact lens that allowed him to meet the league's minimum vision requirement of 20/400.
hey, hey, hey you! yes you the video maker! whats the video called in the intro where one of the hockey players get their head stuck in between the boards?
@JDbear88 i think he is already the man if he could recover from such an injury that 'handicapped' him i think thats more important than playing well. he played well after people thought he was down and he is a great player..
Ooh, I feel so bad for both of them. x_o Neither of the Hossas are like that, imagine having to live with having done that for the rest of your life. And of course, poor Berard.
And Avery fails. Hubby's a Bruins fan so I've seen alot of their games-it was really fun watching Chara, Lucic, Thornton, and the gang use him as a speed bag. =) That is if they could get a punch in before he turtled after talking shit. Hopefully the Rangers trade him soon, it's an insult having him on my favorite team.
Visors definitely should NOT be mandatory. That's just ridiculous. Freak accidents happen, and it's unfortunate, but that doesn't warrant a league mandate on an equipment change in this situation. Players know the risks and just have to hope that everyone else does their best to control their stick. Gotta feel for Berard though. Couldn't wish that on anyone, except Sean Avery... nah that's still too terrible.
Two issues here. One: the "producer" of this video sort of made it seem like the "intense action" in this "crucial game" somehow had something to do with this accident -- like it was a cheap shot or something. Do I even need to argue against this thought process? Two: Bryan Berard was a very promising defenseman -- but to say he was "one of the best" players in the NHL is retarded. Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods? Give me a fucking break people.
Respect to this guy not only for working really hard to get back into the sport, but for giving the money back also.... proves the guy loves the game and not the money, worthy of respect.
out of everbody i do not watch hockey i went to see one live fun in person but i like to say this was one of the sadest thing i saw in my life thats the only thing this boy was good for and it went down the drain for him yes he recovered but still he was gonna be the best (like micheal jorden or tigar woods........) Oh no wiped down the drain now i cried when i seen it thanks for showing this saying anything can happen in life dont never think it will happen to you
I play junior hockey and I have to admit. I hate wearing those bird cage style masks. They really do interfere with your vision, especially when the puck in your feet. I do like the visors though, they should be mandatory.
it was ironic that Berard got hit in the eye by an player of the Ottawa Senators, the team who drafted him. Marian Hossa has never been the same since that game
Bryan Berard. awesome d-man the leafs got for next to noting. and the SOB who took his eye out, Mary Hossa, karma is a bi*ch isn't it? guy goes to the cup finals 2 years in a row and both times is playing for the wrong team. i was watching that game at a bar and i almost burned the place down i was soo angry that there wasn't even a call on that play. careless use of the stick whether intentional or not is still a penalty.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well this is a bad injury but it ould have been worse if berard was a little closer to the guy could've taken a stick to the neck at that point suffocation so he got lucky twice didn't lose his eye & didn't get wacked in the throat lol
oh wow, im suprised i havnt heard of his story before!! but i actually know how he mustve felt, i havnt had my eye almost ben lost. but i recently recieved extreme head truma, i was pulled from hockey :/ i cried for nights on end when i found out the i wasnt gonna be able to play the rest of the season! They then traded him, along with Don Beaupre and Martin Straka to the Islanders for Redden and Damian Rhodes, on January 23, 2006, not "the same day they drafted him".

I was at this game. My Father and I were given tickets to two Leafs games in Ottawa for Christmas that year. We were about 5 rows back from ice level in the visiting team's corner. Amazing seats.
Because of our seats being at the opposite end of the ice, all we saw was Berard drop to the ice. When he got up, there was a huge pool of blood. So much so that it looked black, not red.
We live an hour away from Ottawa. We didn't know what happened until we got home and watch the sports highlights.
Thanks WMG for keeping us from hearing a song that would accompany the video. I hope the S.O.P.A bill passes so we can see more internet policing!!!!
Much respect to Bryan Berard.
