Vivian Vance's character on the Lucy Show was the first ever divorced TV character. On the Mary Tyler Moore show, Mary Richards had a broken engagement. Linda Lavin's character, Alice, was a widow.
Simple. It's My Favorite Martian. Bill Bixby played Tim O'Hara, a newspaper reporter. Ray Walson played Uncle Martin, the Martian. Pamela Britton played Mrs. Brown, Tim's landlady. (Was Mrs. Brown widowed or divorced? She never mentions her husband.)
The answer is very obvious. Back in the day, it was unthinkable to have a divorcee on a tv show, so she was a widow. IN fact when the Mary Tyler Moore show premiered in 1971 she was portrayed as the first divorcee to be featured in a tv show.

Thanks for the comment, Bob. Ur right about back-in-the-day. Until Alice in 1976, it was a taboo subject!
