  • i dont get it at all.

  • I've been sitting here listening to different versions of this beautiful song and didn't think anyone could do a bad version, until now. How disappointing. Bono could have done it in the same way u2 did I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. It could have been awesome..

  • Interesting...spoken word creates a different emotional climate. Very Bono..I kinda like it!

  • THE GREATEST VERSION EVER!!!! I LOOOOOVE IT!!!!!

  • it's obivous all the "haters" of this song don't have an original bone in their body. amen to grianne999...why would you want to hear the same boring thing that's been re-done a thousand times? as a U2 fan it's not one of my all-time favorites, but i can certainly appreciate the originality. "cover songs" are meant to sound different, or at least they should imo; otherwise, what's the sense of covering it?

  • One of the best interpretations from that album. At least something different vs. the country pulp you can hear in other tracks.

  • HOLY FUCK THIS IS SHIT

  • Why did you do that? :(

  • WTF ?!

  • This litterally s u c k s .

  • omg i can't tell you how much i hate this cover...i can't find words for this piece of shit...

  • What a weak effort! With his voice and soul, he could have taken the cover of this song to new level.

  • When I first heard this I thought it was Trey Parker singing, taking the piss out of Bono on South Park or something. Apparently not?!

  • nossa nunca vi o povo falar tão mal do Bono,,não é ruim, é diferente. até que gostei!

  • Am I the only person in the world who likes this? I'm a HUGE Leonard Cohen fan, but my feeling is why cover a song if you're going to make it sound exactly the same.. The best thing about Leonard Cohen is his poetry. This is the first time I've heard this song covered where the band really made it their own.

  • wow... how horrible is this?

  • That was... different.

  • Well, that was interesting.

  • i think even a metail verson would even be better than thisXDjk

  • awfull.

  • Oh no.. cringe ... Bono.. what a disapointment... he wrecked it :o( .. Jeff Buckleys is Heavenly.

  • I'm a huge fan of U2 but omg you can't take a song like this and destroy it ..

  • nice pics

  • Probably one of the worst things I have ever heard... How can anyone want to listen to that....

  • thanks thanks thank... i could never ever find this.... ever only on the cd... and to every body who doubts.... its u2 in the 1990s.... experimental... original.. but still U2..............!!!!!!!!

  • This is just awesome, dont know why everyone hates it

  • @tehpeasant we hate it because it destroys the original, the first cover, the cover of the first cover, and so on. Instead of just showing another artist's interpretation of how it should sound, it is just spoken, which doesn't convey the emotion that the song is meant to entail.

  • Oh, ahaha! This is soooo brilliantly bad. Train crashhhhh... and i can't look away! Oh gosh... now he's singing like a 11 year old boy. Oh, bono. This sorta reminds me of some Gorillaz songs actually.... Oh dear.

  • simply ruined

  • this is still one of my favorite versions of hallelejuah. second to jeff buckleys. i don't care that its whispery and whatnot. its not slavishly literal to the original. bono actually tries to do something different with the song. whether the difference works or not, at least he ventured outside the strict confines of homage to cohen.

  • what the hell is this bullshit? he's just jacked the words of the song, said them in a stupid whispery voice for 5 minutes interspersed with a sample of the worst singing ever recorded. If i wanted to hear this i'd listen to 90% of hip hop. is this serious or is it just an experiment to see how many of bonos fans will lap up this shit, just because he made it?

  • @drumachine01

I would listen to this version over the original ANY DAY! Cohen may be a great lyricist/poet but his version of this song is owned by Jeff Buckley.

  • I don't like this version of the wonderful Hallelujah. The best one is Jeff Buckley's. It really captures your heart., whereas this one is maybe original but certainly tacky. Sorry Bono, I think very much of you but this is my opinion

  • Comment removed

  • Yikes!!! Yuck!!!

  • Simply gorgeous! I like the original song of Cohen, and I truly love this version...:]

  • simply ruined

  • I love Bono. I love Leonard Cohen. I love this song. But I hate this version.

  • I couldn't agree more. What a disappointment.

  • this version just makes me laugh xD

  • THIS IS NOT THE REAL SONG!! DAMNED U MORONS this is A SICK SICK JOKE!! I OWN the album Tower of Song and this is NOT BONO'S REAL RENDITION!!!!!! THIS IS HORRID!

Bono's REAL version is 100x better then this!!! DAMN! Can't any1..........UGHHH!!! I love this song and this butchered it!

  • @Anastasia467able

    u mad?

  • amazing, this is superb. dont know why many epople dont feel it, its differtnt all right, but open up and listen more, every versions is a souls version of it, so enjoy the uniqueness! U2 forever!

  • if "amazing", "superb", "different", "listen", "every", "souls", "enjoy", "uniqueness" in fact i'm going to scrap this witty burn i was building up to and tell you you are objectively wrong

  • ... okay its cool that hes trying to be different... but this is just toooo different >:(

  • To start with, I thought this was an awful, awful joke. Turns out Bono is just a monumental ****. This is probably the worst thing I have ever heard, and I'm not just including music in that. Excuse me, I now have to go and throw up.

  • I definitely think Bono is a talented guy, but I'm totally not feeling this. To each his own!

  • wouldn't it be nice if only talented people were allowed to cover nice songs...

  • bono IS talented, it's just not that good :D

  • What a breath of fresh air. This version, with the visual mix, really brings out the poetry of Cohen's lyric.

  • I think this version is really interesting!! It goes an other way than the other covers! Nearly all covers sound the same. My faovrite is the one of Jeff Buckley. But this one isn't bad!! It only sounds different!

  • OMG!! SAD!!

    Great music,,, It is awsome!

    The "Hallejujah"is Pathetic!

    Very dis-appointed in U2!!

    Wow!!

  • porqueria

  • This is the worst version I've ever heard of this song. I love Bono but ....

  • WTF!... hes talking the whole bloody song and hes still doin it shit thats depressing

  • this is fucking terrible im surprised the rest of the band agreed to do another album after this. thats embarassing bono.

  • Wow. I don't like u2 very much, but I admit they are really great musicians, especially The Edge and Bono. But, and again, wooooooooooooow, this version is HORRIBLE. Want a good cover or version?? Check out Myles Kennedy's

  • Brilliant take of Cohen's classic. Everyone sings it, Bono recites it... brilliant... weird, subjective, but brilliant!

  • I agree. Why do the same arrangement that everyone else is doing. Cool.

  • this is absolutely terrible :(

  • crap

  • this is fucking terrible. bono is bono, cohen is cohen.

  • i absolutely love u2 and bono, but i really, really dislike this one. respect for the originality of this song though.

  • leonard cohen (hallelujah)

  • original, haunting, great, I like it !! There are so many vovers around that it's a releif that Bono does something original with it. And he follows LC's original with his mixture of singing & talking.

  • Oh my.. Me too. :p

  • I'm sorry, I like U2, but this version is simply laughable... I cracked up when I heard the chorus.

  • I am a huge fan of U2 and Bono, even though he usually talks tripe. I've seen them perform up close in Belfast and Dublin since 'War'. I also appreciate the comments that this song should be understood before it is sung - I hardly think tender young Leona has a clue.

However, it reminds me of William Shatner!! Really poor execution (in more ways than one) of a great song.

  • You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what.

    Hallelujah!

    Fuck the Venezuela Solidarity Network.

    Yours smugly, Bono.

  • this just proves that bono is up his own arse

  • i just find this disturbing

  • Beautiful

  • is this music?

  • stinking

  • and another thing... you can be certain Bono is one of the few people who covered this (and who comment here) who actually have an idea what the lyrics mean...meaning certainly it isn't a song to be sung by a young woman, or perhaps even a young man!

  • Courageous "original" version of a great Cohen song. The balls to be so very different to all other versions - and how many times and how many versions and how many people do we want to hear singing it the Buckley way?

  • Lots of critics in the world....very few doers. Interesting version.

    Reverence is its own reward.

  • damn this is soooo bad!

  • hmm, unlike all the other posts, this is one of the best song and image combos out there - it's about a broken but strong faith sung by an irish (who know a thing or two about suffering and faith) in tribute to a jew (ditto on suffering and faith). The lighthouse that stands strong through all storms, even the overwhelming ones, is the perfect complement to the song.

    Well done.

    WKJ

  • Perhaps, this is the best example of how deep you can fuck up a great song.

  • bono is awful

  • Oh dear, it's like a song for the devil

  • Hmmmm.... I get what people say about it being deliberate and all that. But it's a bit shit isn't it?

  • Hm.. nice version, but I think, that U2 can do it better ;)

  • I love the whole concept. The lyrics (the poem) are good and the music is very spiritual to me.

  • i love Bono but i'm not a fan of this. I just don't like the spoken word stuff, but i do like the 'Hallelujah' part where he actually sings

  • This is bizarre.

I understand he's trying to do something different, but those defending him seem to say that the spoken lyrics are a "very emotional form of poetry". Fair enough, but then you have to admit.. the background music does little for it!

  • all you people saying it's shit obviously doesn't know what he is doing. It's called spoken word. Search it up on youtube. SPOKEN WORD. it's a very emotional type of poetry and hallelujah has the perfect lyrics for it. Just because it's not what you expected doesn't mean it's bad. He's not trying to sing and that's the point.

  • it sucks. that's why its bad.

  • I think that this is like the FIRST and ONLY crap thing that Bono has ever done!

  • Interesting.... can't fathom if I like it or not...

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe this isn't 'good', but at least he's tried something different - it's a hard song to cover because so many have done it before him. He didn't just want to make the same thing all over again. And I'm not a Bono fan at all.

  • @bobbelibob

hi, i have a version of this song with slightly different lyrics and a slightly different melody- i wonder if you would like to check it out

Halleujah Uncoverd and Explicit by Ta'fxkz

I have made a video response of it

  • i love bono but this ist shit !!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • AHHBono couldn't hack it by "singing" could he, stupid prick.

  • Really great. I love the jazz, gospel, poetry, modern loop and spoken word feel in this version !!!!!

    Love&Peace

    FB/ Amsterdam

  • perfectly described

  • LOL WAT

  • Fantastic its just like a dirty phone call.

  • very nice vidio.

  • What the fuck is this shit?

  • Very weird version, but pretty cool.

  • Hahaha, what the fuck man, this is ridiculous. It's as though Ross Gellar covered it! "Infinite time!"

  • bono, you cunt.

  • Is that "music"?

  • poetry? you my friend are suffering from mental illness... this is the most pretentious soulless piece of shite i've ever heard. i like some of u2's music, but cmon what the fuck is this?

  • I love it. It's poetry. That's what Bono was aiming for, imo - a poetry reading of a very inspired but also erotic song.

  • Im with you man!...His voice singing Hallelujah is soo powerful!!

  • please, tel me you all agree with me... please tell me this is shit, im not the only same person saying this is a kick in the teeth to the beautiful song hallelujah, tell me im not the only one thinking this is almost an insult to music, let alone leanard cohen. what the hell happened to his voice?!? he suddenly lost the ability to sing. and cover songs!!!! BONO YOU PRICK everyone please reassure me im right

  • This is my favorite song of all time

  • WWHHAAAAaaatttt??????

  • LOL. My reaction exactly. I could do this. Even Leonard Cohen tries to pretend that he's singing

  • WOW

    this is shit

  • ps anyone that hasn't heard jeff buckley's cover, check it out - awesome.

  • this guy has become so wrapped up in his own press releases he seems to be no longer able to judge his own work. Utter shite.

  • omg...what is this? it sounds like a bad rap. bt seriously he has completely killed the songg =/ gosh if i was him i would hide under a rock for the rest of my lifee

  • Bono clearly doesn't understand this song. You can't use the lyrics "it goes like this the fourth, the firth, the minor fall and the major lift" if there is none of those changes actually there in the music. As for the falsetto chorus.. i think i could get my cat to do it better if I strangled it.

  • this makes me want to kick Bono's teeth in...

I think the man's a genius when it comes to music, but this changed my mind.

  • Bono's great

    this song...isn't

  • Im scarred for life, that was hideous. What did he think he was doing when he was screeching the chorus. Puke. No offence to U2 or anything though.

  • Fuck you bono. Fuck you.

  • Your just jealous

  • i think this version is pretty neat really;

the effects, rhythm and horns :D

its alot different from the version everybody does,

quite original, just whether your cup of tea.

  • kill me...kill me now.....what has been heard cannot be unheard!

  • Who is it who thinks Bono is OK? And that U2 are OK? They're one of the biggest bands in the world (which blows my mind, ugh), but I've never met anyone who likes em. Baffling.

And yes, of course, this version of Hallelujah is a complete joke. Tossed off in five minutes by an ego maniac who doesn't care.

  • OH MY GOD THIS IS HORRIBLE! What the hell was Bono thinking?! this is the worst thing they have ever done, i hate this so bloody much

  • I cannot believe this...

  • AAARRGGHHHH!!!!

    This hurts your ears.....

  • what a fuckin dickhead he's trying to rap along and jus sounds like a douche bag

  • I rated this as poor, but only because its god awful! A beautiful song slaughtered by Bono... just horrible!

  • The sound is like hearing really bad house music through the wall of a teenagers bedroom.

The way he says the words is so dispassionate, soulless and bland that if I didn't know better I would swear this wasn't Bono at all.

He had the chance to make a really great version of a classic and just fucked it up so bad.

    I'm a little disappointed here. :(

  • well, i don't really like this version very much at all, but i have got this to say for it- it is probably the most original cover. all the other versions are more or less along the same lines as cohen's, whereas this sounds totally different.

    still, buckley for the win!

  • What is it. This is fu**ing terrible. It's no tribute, it's an insult, both to Cohen and to the ears of anyone who hears it.

I hope dj's and shopping mall managers don't feel the need to poison the soundwaves with it.

    TIT.

  • Not as cool as Jeff's, but still awsome!

  • You're failing to recognise the significance of this 'thing' as the moment that Bono finally disappeared up his own arse.

  • Sounds like he was drunk, high, exhausted and really really bored. Next time, someone should keep him away from any kind of recording equipment.

  • Everyone here is saying, "I love U2, but this is horrible." Now, I hate-hate-HATE U2, and I despise Bono, and love Leonard Cohen - but I actually think this version is pretty cool.

  • Oh Dear Gawddd...This Is Terrible..

  • Comment removed

  • What's the difference between God and Bono?

God doesn't walk around Dublin pretending to be Bono.

  • this is really horrible like fuck, i love leanord cohen and this song and so to hear this is a disgrace to leanords name. This really really sucks!!!!!!!!!!! What did bono do? he ruined a really good song

  • I thought it couldn't get worse than the verse. Then the chorus came. Oh my god. This is an abomination. AND to make matters worse, it was on a TRIBUTE to Leonard Cohen! If I were Leonard, I'd kill myself just so I could turn in my grave at the existence of this atrocity.

  • I love U2 but this is truly awful!!!

  • Apparetnly, U2 fans are horrified that Jeff Buckley's version might get to number two in the charts, so are downloanding this en masse.

  • Of course they were.

  • bono and U2 are musical genius' in my opinion, love their stuff...but this is total guff

  • I respect Bono for the work he does for the poor, but Man!!!! does his music stink. U2 are atrocious.

  • This is the worst thing that has ever happened. I want to dropkick Bono at the moon.

  • what a load of rubbish

  • Wowser. That's spectacularly bad.

  • If ever there was any lingering doubts that Bono is an utter twat this should banish them most expeditiously!

Please - I'm losing the will to live.

  • worst version of the song ever

  • worst version of any song ever

  • funky

  • Sorry to be crude but...

What the FUCK is this? Seriously Bono!

    Come on Man...

    :S

  • hopelessly pretentious

  • Bono is one of the greats but this isn't worth listening. I love U2 but I'm sure he can admit that it's not great!

  • I nearly bought this album on many occasions, but always figured I'd rather listen to Leonard himself. So this is the first time I've heard this monstrosity.

First thoughts - it reminds me of (but isn't nearly as good as) European Supermarket by Joe Cornish. Except European Supermarket isn't meant to be serious.

  • I should imagine thats his God awful trumpet playing too, talentless prick.

  • I'm a big U2 fan - I can even stomach Bono most of the time - but what was going on here? It's pretty nasty stuff...

  • Up until the other day I wasn't even aware Bono had done a version and when I found out about it I just presumed it was live with Edge on acoustic then I read an article about the song and the reporter's description intrigued me so I had to check it out.

    WTF?!!!

I know this was recorded during the Passengers era but even most of that was listenable compared to this! Sounds like a really bad version of Numb!

Sorry Bono but as much as I love your music this is shite!

  • What a load of shite. Great man killing a great song!

  • oh my god. this is horrendous. i love bono, but he just butchered this song.

  • A mop even

  • I'm not saying this is a bad version..I'm just saying dip the end of an mop in some brake-fluid.Stick it up my arse.Put me on a trampoline in a moving lift and I'd sing a better version of this song than Bono's

  • Haha, I agree this version is shocking, but that comment of your
