  • My almost-19-year-old Sethy stopped eating after Clavamox and I've been going broke putting food out for her with no result. This vid may have saved her life. THANK YOU!

  • You'll never know until you try. Egg Nog? Oi, not good idea... Get actual cat food cans, liquify, and syringe that. One of my syringe cats ate some chicken/burger and white rice a few times. It's hard to find a balance between syringe feeding and feeling like you're forcing it. When it seems more like it's being forced, it may be time to end it. Don't let the little one just starve to death though - I feel that's cruel too.

  • My 18 year old cat, pretty much stopped eating a few days ago except liquids or broths. He seems to have quit eating solids. I just tried successfully getting some eggnog down him (about 2 tbls). We have spent lots at the vet, do not know blood test results yet. He is clinging to be big time, wanting to be right next to me, even at the computer. Is my cat past the stage of eating on his own? Not quite sure what to do and how serious to get into assist feeding?

  • Thank you for your video. I particularly love your bib invention! I used it today, and it worked like a charm. Less mess for all of us!

I have been syringe feeding my cat for about a month now. It is inspiring to hear you've been doing it for a year, and it's been effective. I'll keep that in mind when I'm feeling discouraged about my kitties lack of improvement. Thank you once again!

  • I join the many who thank you for this video. I just started syringe feeding today. My beautiful girl just came home from the hospital after a kidney disease crash. She is not eating. I started with kitten's milk and milky canned. Tomorrow I will try the KD. Your video really helped me know what to do, how to do it, and how much to do. Thank you so much!

  • Sorry to hear about the passing of your fur baby. I'm helping a friend with her 2nd fur baby and we need to syringe feed him when he's taking his prednisone so he doesn't get an upset tummy.

  • Thanks - see if it's possible to split the pill in two, and give twice daily as opposed to all at once. May help by not getting it all at once.

  • Thank you so much for your advice and help!

  • Thank you so much for this video. I'm going to be adding the link to my website for kitties with IBD, pancreatitis, fatty liver disease and other intestinal issues. This is a great instructional. I'm so sorry for you loss. I lost my beautiful girl as well to Triaditis. Please feel free to contact me if your kitty had IBD. I'd love to include her on my tributes page. Great work, thank you again! For some reason I can't include the link here so you can contact me via my youtube account.

  • Great video! Sorry about your little girl! :(

  • the paper towel with the 'T' cut for a bib a was genius. THANK YOU for that demonstration.

I use the bib for her neck area, but I still have to wrap her in a towel like a buritto....

  • Thanks I maybe doing this myself. My cat has such a low thyroid the machine couldn't read it. He is on meds and a liquid to settle his tummy. H

e as lost his hearty appetite. He has started eating a tiny bit of canned food last night and this morning. So I'm hoping I don't have to go this route and he will starting eating on his own. He is also on meds to get his appetite back

  • Did your cat growl when you first started this? I have a Female cat that growls when I try to feed her. I am very gentle with her and this is new to her. She always kinda talks as well. It sounds like NOM NOM NOM NOOMMMM........it is cute kinda.....

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. My cat has been ill and although he eats a little on his own he needs some supplemental food until he gets his strength back. Vet showed me exactly like you said to keep giving way too fast it looked like it was hurting him. Will try your method tomorrow as I think it will work much better. Sorry to hear about Ninja.

  • great video thanks

  • Thank you so much for sharing. My Eliza Jane is just 6 years old but was diagnosed with FIV last year. Unfortunately, the virus has been rather aggressive. She is weak and has not been eating well. I have struggled with feeding her. This video is a treasure. Also, thanks for the information regarding the pumpkin.

  • So sorry to hear about your sweet Ninja. What a kind person you are. Thank you so much for keeping this video up. It will help alot of cats and their humans. My cat had CRF and my vet referred me to Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline CRF - the website really helped me learn how to care for her.

When a cat is sick and not eating, assist feeding can help them feel better. "old age is not a disease" Thanks again and bless you.

  • Thanks to everyone for the appreciation of this video. Just trying to help others with their little friends! We now have 2 cats remaining in our original family of 5. They both eat on their own still right now, but we use the syringe feeding method to give the girl her pills, since she clamps down like a vice when you try to give them to her otherwise!

  • Thanks so much for this. While we were at the vet's office, she thought my 17 year cat was going to eat well enough on her own to not need syringe feeding, so while she suggested it as an option, she didn't demonstrate it. Now, at home, it's become obvious that I'm going to have to supplement my cat's feeding. Being able to see it done was so helpful. My vet agrees with you on not rushing the feeding, since forcing the food too quickly can cause the cat to aspirate it into the lungs.

  • This brought tears to my eyes... you're an angel. She was a very lucky cat to have you! I'm syringe feeding my sick cat now and found this video very helpful, I'm definitely going to use the bib idea!!! Thanks!

  • Thank you.

What a gentle, patient and loving man. Your cat is so sweet as well.

I was going mad trying to force feed my old cat with a spoon and lumpy cat food. You can imagine the mess and tears from us both. Your way is much better and Tammy is getting used to it.

    Thank you so very much.

    Cheers,

    Ray

  • Thank you so much for uploading this video, it has been very helpful for me as I am terrified of doing this but I need to :(

  • how much should i feed my cat n how many times a day? mines 2 yrs old n i just found out he has FIV so hes weak right now :( help please!

  • I'm not a vet, ask them. Just don't feed to much at once or he/she will get sick. Syringe feeding means more times to feed them because of the increased water content though. I fed mine every 3-4 hrs, a whole syringe full, every day. Don't remember the size of the syringe, but you can gauge it based on the video to what's available for you to purchase at the store or your vet.

  • THanks. Sad topic, but really helpful.

  • I agree with you comments that after a while you do get to a point where it is cruel to keep them alive. My dog had cancer and we got to that point. We were keeping her alive for us.

  • This is excellent! Thank you so much! My 10-year-old kitty got poisoned somehow, the vet thinks. After a weekend in the hospital getting fluids, it's up to me to syringe feed him the a/d they sent home. What a challenge! He's doing much, much better than last week but still not eating enough. So sorry about Ninja.

  • Thanks. Careful with the AD though. It's a fatty food, and may give diarrhea. We blend our food with a blender. Adding some canned pumpkin to KD canned food or the AD will help with those problems.

  • @irecoverdata I remember you saying something about pumpkin in the video. If I have to keep this up for much longer, I'll definitely take your advice. Thanks again!

  • how did he or she die

  • She passed from some intestinal problem.

In the end, you can only do so much. Dr.'s are only able to offer assistance to a point, then I feel it can border on cruelty keeping the alive. Never thought I'd see things from that point of view, but seeing / witnessing what we have, now I do...

  • Your cat was so good about this! My cat complains loudly the whole time - she's currently 18 and black also. She has CRF. I had to syringe feed her for about a month when she was first diagnosed, and she's been good for 2 years but had a relapse this week so I'm syringe feeding her once more :P

The paper bib is an awesome idea! I bought Panther a baby bib, but it gets dirty so fast and I just don't do that much laundry ;) the towel bibs can come into play when the bib is gross!

  • Thanks for posting this video and sorry to hear about Ninja. I just started today to force feed my persian cat who has stopped eating and lossed alot of weight, its going ok except he vomited on my lap in the afternoon but i started to give him a little at a time which now stays down. i hope this works as my vet has only given me a week and if he doesnt improve i have to put him to sleep but i am going to prolong the deadline by 3. but the paper i will deffinetly use. Thank you so much.

  • Thanks so much for the vid! This is very helpful.

  • R.I.P, Ninja; you were fortunate to have a loving owner.

I'm currently syringe feeding my very aged cat; I'm learning to get better at doing it. Like you, I talk to my cat and encourage her with a gentle persuasion.

    Cats are the best !

  • Bless you a million times for this video. I have felt sooo alone and so frightened, having to syringe feed one of my older cats who cannot eat or drink on her own anymore. Wow. Just...thank you very, very much.

Peace. I am so sorry for the loss of your Ninja.

  • Wow. You should see the battles I'm waging right now with my kitty. He does not sit calm like that and he'd tear that piece of paper to confetti.

  • I'm so happy you shared this with us. I felt horribly intimidated at the idea of force feeding my cat which needs it. You make it look so calm and 'doable'. It helps to see the method practiced rather than read how to do it.

  • rip

    ='-[

  • My cat is having eating problems aswell, took him to the vet, hes a bit better now but still isnt eating.. going to force it on him though using ur method :]

  • Well good luck to you. We're actually syringe feeding another cat now, but only supplemental, she eats, just not enough.

  • Thanks for this video. So sorry to hear Ninja passed away...my kitty died in September and it's still hard for me.

I'm currently fostering a sick cat (who looks a lot like Ninja) and am trying to get used to the syringe feeding process, so this is really helpful.

  • Thanks, it sucks. Wish they lived longer.

  • Aw you're so good with your cat. I'm really struggling with the syringe feeding. I'm using A/D but can only do 10 ml at a time. I wish you were my neighbor so you could help me! My cat is 18, an insulin dependent diabetic for 7 years, and I'm also doing subQ fluids since "Rusty" has stopped eating and drinking. I'm just not ready to let go of my sweetie. Your video is the best one on YouTube for syringe feeding a cat. I will watch it many times for help. Thanks so much!

  • You're welcome - syringe feeding is also great to try since a cat may just be temporarily sick. The cat in the video is STILL alive, and actually gained a few pounds. We've been doing this with her for about a year now.

  • That was done very well. I love the bib idea! I have a kitty who has CRF and have had to syringe feed for the last two days. It is certainly much messier than your video. I am going to try the bib and the way you hold your kitty tomorrow. Thanks for posting!

  • That was adorable. Your cat behaves so well and seems to really enjoy this time while she's being fed. My cat would never sit like that with her legs in front and fights me on tilting her head back, but we're working on it. I need to help her get some weight back after a serious illness. Thanks for the video, it helps a lot.

  • Great video, thanks. I recently had to start syringe feeding my cat and I really had no clue how to go about doing it. I love how your cat and the area stays so clean. Mine gets full of flung cat food.
