Few people in the south own all season tires. The rubber compound on summer tires is completely different from all season or snow, and below 40F degreees it hardens, at freezing and below, the tires are literally as hard as a hockey puck - which has almost no traction on ice. Yes any car with poorly outfitted tires will do this in a similar situation.

WTF! How does that happen? We have a 330i in central WI and that thing can make it through 6" of snow just fine. You actually have to turn of TCS to have any fun in it. Its quite good on ice too.

@GerbilEssences - upon visiting this story posted on a BMW site, these models were known for oil leaks on the valve covers.... apparently this one may have been leaking and all of the racing and racing of the engine made it leak more and was already getting hot from it racing. I heard he had been racing the engine violently for over 20 minutes.

ProTip: you cannot "melt through" the ice by spinning your tires. You are just making the ice underneath you even SLICKER! To unstick yourself in the snow/ice, spin your wheels as slooooowly as possible. It's also a good idea to keep some Kitty Litter and a shovel in the trunk.

He said, on another video, "I lost traction for some reason" - well, duh, the road is snow/ice covered and this is a REAR WHEEL DRIVE car. I think the fire was from a fuel leak or something electrical under the hood shorting out... it was the tires heating up the back of the car would have been on fire. I think its possible he raced his engine so fast he blew something under the hood up. RWD cars should not be out in this.
