@gordo39432 You do realize that Youtube does a lot of compression and processing to the audio and that the original source file for the download here is probably an MP3?
This song is truly surreal. Hearing it for the first time was as close as I ever got to feeling God's presence. If I had to rank this album on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being worthless and 10 being awsome I'd give it a 15.
@nomonkeymind pino palladino on bass and manu katché on drums (not on the whole album though: this tune and Standing on the corner of the third world only ;)
6:51-7:15 is my favourite part of this song. It's a fantastic example of Roland's normal and falsetto voice and some of the skills he has but doesn't often show off :3
"Well here's to the boys back in 628, where an ear to the wall was a twist of fate"
I wonder does this refer back to the fact that in The Brighton Hotel when the members of the party conference and Thatcher were targeted by the IRA? namely because the plotter planted the bomb in between rooms 628 and 629?
I already know of his "when the wind blows, when the mothers talk" lyric, but just wondering!
@michaelgadsby Roland said this song was about how one night on tour he was in his hotel room and overheard members of his touring group complaining about him in the next room (Room 628). Lol
Some albums are just a collection of songs that have no relationship to each other. This is no such album. Every song is a classic in its own right. There is not one bad song on this album. Every song is connected to all the others, there is a common theme throughout the album. This is a great album.
TFF is one of the greatest composers and performers of all time. The diversity of instruments and vocal ranges and altering is nothing short of miraculous. Most of the TFF songs have a very deep and spiritual meaning...I do think these boys read the bible. Who compares to this group? No one!
Late night, late autumn, windows open, clear nights, candles lit, cool breezes blowing through my place....this is what this music is for. I am a rock music nerd who loves the Beatles, Dylan, Springsteen, Bowie, Joni Mitchell....none of them ever made a record this perfect. The greatest album of all time.
Saw T.F.F live at Sheffield City Hall (England) 1990 or 91 in the Sowing The Seeds Of Love Tour. I've seen U2, Jacko, Madonna and many more but i always say that this was the best concert i have ever been to. They were amazing and if memory serves they opened the concert with this song and i was spellbound. The most under rated group in the history of pop. This song alone is head and shoulders above 99% of the dross that passes for 'music' today.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE T.F.F. SONGS. USED TO HIT REPEAT ALL THE TIME! OLETA BEAUTIFUL VOICE. HAD A PLEASURE SEEING THEM IN CONCERT IN 1992 AT PATRIOT CENTER IN VA.
@theawakener7 I totally agree with you. I have Curt on my twitter list. It is so funny to think of this person that we see as one half of a near perfect duo, tweeting about everyday life. Taking his kids to school, going to movies, getting ice cream....etc
Near the end of the song after the drum and piano solo, listen for the verse that is at 6:40. He is singing ..."and you don't know why " twice at an amazingly high range. Not many rock singers can get near Roland' range.
@hailzeewolfman They are geniuses. They tried to put out perfect albums. And they did. Rolling Stone mag. Named Sowing the Seeds of Love the best album of the decade. (80's) even though it came out at the end of '89. I saw them in Feb '90.
Probably the best song they ever did. When i see some of their 1985 pop songs hit #1 in the charts yet this song went largely unnoticed it shows how fickle most music fans really are. This is a truly great song. The entire CD is a must have. Whether Rolling Stone named it the best CD of the 1980's i dont know. This is up there but for me "Unforgetable Fire" gets the top spot!
@thelongshot99 Good on you for being into it, but I think when you say people who didn't like it are fickle, you should realise others may have completely different taste in music. I can't stand soul, blues or jazz, never could, never will, and I never liked this track, despite listening to it heaps! But I'm not fickle. I'm into their early 80s electronic style - The Hurting etc. That album and this song are poles apart. Love what Roland did after this though - Elemental and Raoul, great albums.
@chrisnoaro1 I don't think it's possible to hate all of soul, blues, and jazz. Early Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Miles Davis electric, Weather Report, Motown. You cannot idolize these British crooners and dismiss all the Americans who shaped their sound. 1965 to 1975 is full of quality stuff that never made it onto any radio station.
@ajdicks Generally that area of music has proven itself to be alien & hostile to my ears. Just because an artist is influenced by someone else, it doesn't follow that you necessarily like what they like. New Order & Kraftwerk say they like soul & yet their music lacks soul in the traditional music sense. Talk Talk's Spirit Of Eden is apparently influenced by Miles Davis, but the Miles Davis I've heard doesn't appeal to me at all. Suggest I listen to something and I'll give it a go! Cheers
@chrisnoaro1 Buy Steely Dan "Aja" and Chaka Khan "Echoes of an Era." They distill everything great in jazz, soul, and blues. If every song sucks after multiple listens I will personally mail chris noaro a money order for three times standard cost. The Miles Davis record most appealing to synthpop fans would be "In a Silent Way" although I won't guarantee you'll ever love it because it's minimalist
@ajdicks Thanks I appreciate that. I really am into giving different music a go and have significantly widened my taste since I was a teenager. I do also give music multiple listens as I've found from experience that the best music often takes time before you begin to appreciate it's hidden or more subtle qualities. I will definitely check those albums out from my library. Cheers
@thelongshot99 I think this is their best song, too, but I understand why it didn't make the charts. Probably someone said that already, and if so, I'm sorry for being redundant, but people who do the programming at radio station (in the 80s or now) would never play an eight-minute song in their line ups. They need time for adds. It is not that I agree with them, I'm just saying that I think that is the reason.
I saw theSTSOL concert! I did know how lucky I was to see them. A one of a kind group. This song has been my favorite for many years. This was about the crew on the Song's from the Big Chair Tour.
"Well here's to the boys back in (room)628" Listen to the words carefully.
I thought I bought the CD (years ago) for Seeds of Love. Later, I thought, Perhaps I bought it for this song that I didn't even know at the time. absolutely awesome.
He is KILLIN those drums! This group made monster music! Just don't hear this kind of stuff anymore. Sade's band - like WOW!, Earth, Wind and Fire (b4 their time), U2 just a few more. Can we get some real music again with real lyrics, PLEEEEASE?!?!?
an incredibly ambitious pop tune. large and elegant. bonus points for oleta adams' goosebump raising vocal contribution. completely brilliant all around.
Who is able to play like that ? Who is able to write such song ? Who to perform it ? Phil Collins, Clapton, who else ? Spiro Gira for sure. But nowadays bands ? Who can tell me this song is not almost the perfection. everything based on cons-time music and jazz-rock. Great; Fayçal
A young girl shouldn't not talk like that really . Do your parents know you have such a potty mouth? Go back to playing on your psp and stay away from things you don't understand.
I'm totally totally agree!!!! It was an incredible performance, this is very dfficoult to play, Roland have sung and played perfectly!! Also Oleta was great, what a big band and period!
thesunandtherain AGREED!... and so right you are. i have the 1990 Knebworth show on dvd. and it was remastered to perfection for dvd release. i love badmans song. and the live version from the Knebworth performance is totally awsome. and with todays digital processers badmans song totally rocks in 7.2 digital surround. PEACE OUT!
I know what you mean,I live in the US but not close enough to attend any shows. I guess we'll have to be content with You Tube! Maybe they'll record these shows and put it out on dvd!
Any Florida TFF fans out there? i'm a lifetime fan (what Roland calls 'the hardcores') but i can't afford california right now. We should have some kind of reunion in July.
Did not like this soulful stuff that they started doing. But it grew on me just like all of their other stuff.ROLAND AND CURT were great songwriters,TEARS FOR FEARS RULE and so does 80s music.
Great song, huge production & in my opinion, one of the best Pino Palladino fretted work ever.I swear I've listened to this tune hundreds of times with headphones since 1989 and I'm not really a TFF fan but this track's just perfect! 8)
Yeah, all the tracks of this album are great songs but Badman's song is the only one with this Soul feel that I just love :) my other fav tracks are Woman in chain & Standing on the corner of the third world.Great record,a pop music classic in my opinion...
I just bought the Californian Nights dvd. Roland sang most of the songs in it.(happily!).I enjoy Curts vocals also but hes good mainly for harmonies. Are you going to see them this summer?
Please try to watch the live version of this track, a masterpiece blending soul, jazz, blues, gospel and rock. I was blown away when i heard it, best live with fantastic percussion solo in the middle. Man Roland can sing, when you see them live you realize how powerful his vocals are.
I actually own the live version and you're right its a masterpiece.Knebworth 1990 is superior as well.I enjoy his vocals with Ms.Adams but Roland has voice range unmatched. Right now, he serenades me daily! So I have a rich fantasy life!
I first heard this track on BBC Radio 1 on I think the Gary Davies show. I was driving at the time and had to pull over. I was stunned first time out on hearing it. What a masterpiece. Come back Roland and Curt - please.
I LOVE THIS SONG!! Its one of my favorites! There are so very few songs now with great arrangements where the producers aren't afraid to just make GOOD MUSIC and to hell with making it radio ready. BEST!!!
This song is perfect as it is. 8 minutes of your life well spent. A masterpiece.

I have the Knebworth video, well did, but the Live in California version is brilliant also.

I just bought the Californian Nights dvd. Roland sang most of the songs in it.(happily!).I enjoy Curts vocals also but hes good mainly for harmonies. Are you going to see them this summer?
thesunandtherain 2 years ago

BEST!!!
