Sounds to me like Tebaldi is perfectly happy with the tempo. She sounds gorgeous - butcan you hear how, on this day, the voice is asking for a LOT of air, so much that she chooses to break a few phrases in order to keep 'feeding the beast' (a smart choice from a great singer). It seem to me that a temp any slower and she may not have made such a lovely soft top and then the free, large ending.
@johndlabella tebaldi sings the phrase "domine et lux perpetua" as written with a long crescendo on the domine and a subito piano on the et lux ...achieving the stunning effect the composer asks. This is more dificult to do making it one phrase as Schwartskof Price flemming and Caballe do,the contrast is not as affective,and suddenly Verdi can sound like schubert or straus.
Quis fuit primus qui sine animo, mente et corde protulit enses ad cantus et carminis mirabilia necanda? Optima in sepulcro iacent post Concilium II : resurgant !!!!
Who else is on the picture at 3:37? I believe the lady on the left is the great Marian Anderson. I wasn't aware that the two of them knew each other, let alone had performed together.
Grande Renata
who not like it or loves her is because have no taste,and dont like the beautiful she makes me cry many and many times what a voice! forever tebald the rest is the rest
Something which strikes me when I listen to Toscanini conduct singers is that he doesn't let them indulge...many of the mannerisms which made them famous/unique vanish. More often than not they sing what is written, free from interpretation. I quite like it....it allows the composition to speak as a whole...and for itself.
I agree with all who have commented that Tebaldi's performance is exceptional as always, but no one has noted that Toscanini ruins this fundamental composition - the Verdi Requiem - and her performance one might add, through his breakneck speed and general insensitivity. However did this conductor obtain his reputation??? I can only quote Furtwängler, " a little Italian clockmaker" - and I am a great friend of Italy and everything Italian.
Aquí demuestra por qué TOSCANINI la llamó LA VOZ DE ANGEL.

@Matt75003 M. Anderson, L Warren, R, Tebaldi and J Peerce at piano

@Matt75003 Isn't that Sol Hurok on the right? I know he managed Anderson and Peerce. Perhaps Tebaldi also? This looks like a staged PR shot to me.

If only Toscanini had let her fly , we would hear an even finer voice. Toscanini in his restricive conducting stifled the true beauty of singers..

What an immense voice with such a delicate tessitura -- and the dramatic inflection of an actress. A wonder!

No one sings this like Tebaldi. She had the perfect voice for this music.

My God this is just perfect. What a stunning performance. You can see why Toscanini said she had the voice of an angel.
