Art Carney winning the Oscar for best actor over Jack Nicholson in "Chinatown", Al Pacino in "The Godfather Pt. II, Dustin Hoffman in "Lenny" and Albert Finney in "Murder On The Orient Express" has got to be the biggest upset in the history of the Academy Awards.
This is a great movie, a true sleeper classic. It's a shame these slow sorts of films, with loose structures, are no longer tolerated in the studio system. We lost something real and precious when we decided that Joseph Campbell and the screenwriter's workshop ran Hollywood.
NO,no. I'm sorry I meant the movie in general ,it had some funny parts. That scene is horrible, so sad. I have 2 cats and god forbid the day something happens.
I saw this last night for the first time and I just loved it. It was very good and very sad I kind of feel bad for the Harry and when he had to put down his cat that was the worst.
Watched this movie many years ago. I think on Starz channel. Loved it. I waited for it to come out on DVD and now I have my copy. One of my favorites ,too bad it's not well known. Yes, Art deserved the Oscar. Al Pacino and Nicholson were at the beginning of their career, Art was wrapping things up . Old school, good and simple without violence or sex.BTW: another excellent movie from those years that people don't know of is Marvin and Tige with Cassavetes
Watching it now on CBC here in Ottawa Canada. Googled it and had forgotten I have seen it and its Art Carney! Just read Tonto had 2 stand ins and never used them Art said he was a real trooper and he hates cats but loved Tonto. He said he had an uncle who would talk to his dog and used that for his inspertion. Ellen Burstyn played in Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore! She works alot with Martin Scorcase and Darren Aronoskvy (pardon spelling) wonder if she is still alive and knows Mickey Rourke?
I'd like to see this just because I never heard of it until the other day, and how Art Carney won the Oscar over Al Pacino for The Godfather Part II and Jack Nicholson over Chinatown. Sometimes great peformances devide up the votes. But I hear it was a great peformance.
I had been wanting to see this movie for several years and just got around to it a few months ago. It easily fell into my Top 10 list and I regretted not seeing it sooner. I love the simplicity of it and how it doesn't fall into over-sentimentality.
This is a favorite movie of mine. I liked Art Carney's performance towards the end when he meets up with his son Eddie(Larry Hagman). I liked how Harry was there for his son despite his faults. It made me feel for some of the elderly people out there. Some of it has cheesy scenes, but a good movie.
i first saw this because i love cats more than anything in the whole world, and someone recommended it to me because of that... and i ended up loving it! it made me cry, of course...
Paul Mazursky is my distant cousin and he named this movie after friends who came into my grandfathers resturant so often when my mother was a child.

my favorite line is from that kid when he tells her aunt: "I like you too Aunt (name) but I think you`re a bitch." I was not expecting that line.
