It pays tribute to the original Tracy's mother actor DIVINE. He was a well known drag queen famous for his role in Pink Flamingos. Sadly; he pasted away just 10 days after Hairspray opened in movie theaters. He died in his sleep when his heart stopped beating.

John Waters only gave the rights away for the musical; IF AND ONLY IF, the person casted for the mother was ALWAYS a man.

THE best musical in the past 20 years. Those Tony idiots totally forgot Linda Hart who stopped the show several times. This number is so much better EDITED. I thought it would have gone on for weeks. I love Fierstein but his singing was TOO painful and totally incomprehensible. We sat in the 8th row center and could not make out one word.

Yes, it is Matthew Morrison. He was well known on broadway long before Glee came along playing original roles in Hairspray, The Light in the Piazza and Lt. Joseph Cable in the revival of South Pacific. People should learn his name and stop just refering to him as Mr. Schuester because his talent definitely transcends his character on Glee

Not exactly sure what you mean by "gay" ?? Anyway, it depends on who you ask really. I think Hairspray is great fun, as is Wicked. I don't care for Phantom [or any musical by Webber really]. Haven't seen Lion King. But if those 3 musicals you listed are what you compare other musicals to, then I think you'll love Hairspray. I don't mean to sound like a theatre snob, but there are so many shows superior to those 3, and this one as well. But if you like more "mainstream" stuff, try Hairspray!
