sino ba 'tong donmiguel na to? na hindi naman naiintindihan ang kulturang filipino comment ng comment. is there a pure culture? even you, you are not pure. don miguel, did you understand?
Mexico conquered las Islas Filipinas??? Never knew that! (LOL) There was the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade, but Mexico never colonised us, as far as I (and all of us conversant with Filipino-Spanish history) know.
So, Miguel, what did you expect? The Philippines had ongoing relations (you call it being conquered) w/ Spain and
Mexico. It's still Filipino culture -- multifaceted and diverse. Spaghetti is still Italian food even if noodles came from China and tomatoes from South America. The music is NOT Filipino in any way? Are we talking about usage or origin?
It doesn't matter. Human experience is seldom cut and dry...black or white. Mostly it's a soft blending from one spectrum to another.
Speaking of Mexican Don Miguel1810 arnt the Mexicans the ones who lost their Culture and Heritage entirely to the Spainards? While us Filipinos have won back our Country and to this day still have our own Culture fully intact thank you for noticing. There are more FOLK DANCES than these Spanish influences you are viewing in this Video. :-D
The music is pure Filipino. Tthis kind of music is called " balitaw "a type of folk song or music and the dance was created for it. How do I know ? I am a folk dance and song researcher.
@DonMiguel1810 not mexican, b/c mexican, in my studies, came to power like the philippines... some explorer comes and hails himself king and call us indois, then other europeans conquer and migrate to that place as if there is no one there...
ah it is more peaceful here. i just love the fantastic costumes and the dignity of the graceful dancers. i wish we can roll back the time and live life like that without stomping our moral values that are getting decayed in this modern times.
I don't know if to feel proud or guilty of what we as Spaniard have done through out the world!! However, it is something to see my own culture roots and music on people so far away from nuestra tierra!!
You have a different lyrics version. The one I gave is the version as sung by the Mabuhay Singers in their second all-Waray language album released sometimes in the 1970's (unattested). The same lyrics is found in the book of Eugenio and Gozo. There is also a totally different set of lyrics to the same melody found in the book of Francisca Reyes Tolentino.

It is a dance named after the capital city of the Philippines, Manila, where an adaptation of Castilian Jota afloats with the clacking of bamboo castanets played by the dancers themselves. The costume and the graceful movements of the performers noticeably inspired by Spanish Culture.
nice dance.I am still proud of being a Filipino. That is one thing I condsider a blessing in my life ..I use to dance this when I was still younger. Now i am 36 and it is so beautiful to remember those moments.Living in Europe for so many years haven`t change the fact that I stay Pinoy in so many ways..Mabuhay ang filipino...

I am Proud Waray and this music reminds of my childhood in Northern Samar and how we dance Lawiswis Kawayan when I was in gradeschool. thanks for having this video here...
I also happened to dance the Lawiswis Kawayan during my elementary days in Samar. We perfomed the version where the boy's have a mango leaf bit by the mouth (signifying the gross parrot (pikoy) as the song states and we danced on top of a chair. That was very cute :)
You have to define Filipino first. Try defining it in these contexts: Agta, Agusanon Manobo, Bagobo, B'laan, T'boli, Kalingga, Ivatan, Maranao, Maguindanao, Tagbanwa, Ibanag, Bukidnon, Subanen, Samal, Waray, Cebuano, Bikol, Tagalog, Jama Mapun and the list is longer before you can say American (or Filipino-American)
hey, i just learned something today! i never knew the philippines had so much spanish influence..i am mexican-filipino, and i have heard all of those phrases in tagalog and the foods, but it never really connected....and people always tell me that i am such a weird combination! now i'll tell them this!
The colonial Spanish Government governed the Philippines from Mexico and was considered part of the Mexican territorial domain. The early Filipinos who migrated here sought out thier cultural ties and in California married mostly Mexican women "music and chicken fights" bonded them. In Washington state most married Indains or White women. I'am half Ilocano and half German now thats a combination.
I loved the background. It is wonderful! It shows what Philipines trully is geographically! And the dance is the Philippines! being Filipino means mostly being Spanish but not completely spanish. We would be the tropical Spain. Thanks for the beautiful melodies they've shared with us!
being filipino does not mean being spanish. That is a dumb quote. The philippines is a country with american, chinese, indian, and spanish influences. That is why they have so much diversity.
Yes there are. Serious dance researchers discovered that Chinese elements are found in the dance "Paypay de Manila", "Binislakan", and "Sakuting". The music used in the last 2 dances are very Chinese. "Silong sa Ganding" of the MAguindanao is Hindu-Veddic influenced while the many versions of the Lanceros came from the american square dance "the Lancers"
hindi... philippines is american.... the spanish they are too humble, being mixing their blood with the ex colonies. not like the americans, they didnt mix, only the old lolos that they marry our women.
While we can not turn the wheels of time back, it would be more rational and human to focus on what is good and edifying. Let's not scratch healed wounds. Let's not cry over spilt milk. We'll only be sour treasuring and harboring ugly pasts. Move on.
you have a very limited view of what culture is. spain imparted good things to us as well, like this dance, this music, our faith in God, literature, our nation, our heroes, and that nostalgic past when our lolos and lolas spoke or understood each other in Spanish. ...
You have a very limited view of what Filipino culture is, mo... C'mon, as saiaopinoi said, stop blaming the past. Its you who should rather be blamed for lacking the intelllegence to appreciate what is beautiful in us. Too bad you don't speak spanish, i suppose, (it shows in the way you write). If you only know the passion of our heroes This dance mirrors that past!
Thanks. Its a pleasure seeing them dance gracefully. Especially hearing the music that goes with it as well as wearing such beautiful outfit that goes with it. They really make a good presentation as a true pinoy and pinay.
Hello from Colombia, nice to see Filipinas embracing some of their Spanish folk heritage, would love to go visit sometime esp. Zaboanga, Boracay and el nido. I think its a shame they almost completely abandoned the Spanish language would've been nice to have a latino country in Asia. check my salsa videos;-)
I dont think its that bad. Spanish would be good because its universal. But its for the Spanish people. For us Filipinos, we have alot of native languages to choose from. Ones that can speak of our soul and identity. :)
Hi! Even if we no longer speak Spanish, there is a Latino in every Filipino; (Language uses plenty of Spanish words; check out the cuisine, music, art and dance that have Spanish touch); Most of all, we have a lot of passion.
Thanks Noel. I salute your efforts in 'practicing' our dance culture. Ou culture wont be extinct of more and more people like appreciate it. May your tribe increase!
WOW! It's really good! I like it very much!!!
No disrespect Saiapinoi, but Thai is more FOREIGN to Filipinos than Spanish is. The fact that filipinos have names as Gonzalez, Roxas, Rizal, Arroyo, Estrada, Aquino, Rodriguez, whether by blood and decree, cannot divorce themselves from their Hispanity regardless of their geographic location in Asia. To say Filipinos are strictly Asian is absurd. There are 2,500-5000 Spanish loan words in the various dialects and I don't believe they use any Thai words that I know of.

Hmmm heheheh, ah ok. I like that word PASSION. en Español PASION.

yup, maganda ung dance,...

We must be proud of whoever we are. I am a proud to be a Filipino-Thai...and my mother is from Samar!
This dance is so beautiful isn't it?
Saiaopinoi 4 years ago
No disrespect Saiapinoi, but Thai is more FOREIGN to Filipinos than Spanish is. The fact that filipinos have names as Gonzalez, Roxas, Rizal, Arroyo, Estrada, Aquino, Rodriguez, whether by blood and decree, cannot divorce themselves from their Hispanity regardless of their geographic location in Asia. To say Filipinos are strictly Asian is absurd. There are 2,500-5000 Spanish loan words in the various dialects and I don't believe they use any Thai words that I know of.

Thai is out of the way here. IT SO HAPPENED THAT MY MOTHER IS A FILIPINA FROM SAMAR AND MY FATHER IS FROM THAILAND.
Thai is not foreign to me! Look as to who are you talking to!?
