The first mistake you make is assert that Atheism is the "lack of belief." Atheism is resplendent with belief in the unprovable. For starters, "everything came from nothing." That is Atheism 101. Just because Atheism doesn't have a centralized book doesn't mean you won't hear the same thing coming from it's adherents everywhere you go.

Imagine, a Catholic Priest telling a former Catholic parishioner that they aren't welcome in the Church? It seems to me that this is the big difference between a Cult and a Religion. If I'm "not a good Catholic", I can still get a bowl of soup at the mission. If there's room, I may even get a bed for the night. I don't mean to pick on the Catholics but most religions seem to have that in common. Just by this (mean spirited BTW) response I'd have to label Scientology a cult, out of hand.

Of course, I am cautious when dealing with religions because of these stories about cults. I know what to look for. If they try to keep you away from your family, granted there's not some other circumstance, force you to stay, degrade you, etc.
