When I was a kid, I used to make slingshots, but they weren't very strong because of limited rubber bands. To combat this, I would flick my wrist as the rock/ball started moving. I managed to get the slingshots reasonably powerful compared to the elastic streangth with this.

Do you flick your slingshots to add power? I noticed something simmilar at 2:51.

very impressive, i can hardly believe it. ballistic gel is supposed to simulate human tissue and i have seen plenty of testing with firearms on the stuff. this video would seem to prove that your slingshots are capable of penetrating human flesh deep enough to cause trauma to major organs. it also means you could likely hunt game as big as deer with them. i will have to try and make one of your designs to see for myself. truly amazing.

now i have a little question, i do archery with bow and arrow and you are not allowed to shoot the bow without an arrow on it, the power that normaly pushes the arrow gets in to the bow and the bow might crack, now is that the same with slingshots? or are you allowed to release the slingshot without a baal on it?

@benjimon2712 Dry firing a powerful slingshot is often painful, as the band will stretch out far, driven by the kinetic energy of the pouch and its own weight. Then it will snap back and hit your fork hand. Ouch!

@benjimon2712 I'd say no, I think bows crack if you shoot them with no arrows because of the violent Back and Forward vibrations of the string. With or without ammunition, the ruber band always shakes violently, so you can shoot it unloaded without breaking it. Plus, slingshots are much more resistant for their sice than most bows and crossbows (if made of metal or strong woods), the first component to break on a slingshot is usually the rubber.

I find it great that those slingshot rounds cleanly go through the target in straight line while bullets cause an expansion 1 inch into the gel, if I was going to be shot I would perfer to be shot with a slingshot... and by you and your slingshots.

Realy enjoyed the presentation. Do you have any thoughts about the ability of these slingshots to deliver hydrostatic shock similar to a bullet? Viewing the shots seems that they deliver very little hydrostatic shock, but rather seems to do an excellent job of penetration. It seems that they would definitely be overkill on small game.

@faultroy Hydrostatic shock occurs with hypervelocity bullets. In fact, it really wasn't a part of bullet trauma until recent times when bullet speeds started to reach several thousand FPS. In the case of a slingshot, you're maybe reaching a couple hundred FPS maximum (nowhere near enough to induce the effect). However, firearms killed quite effectively LONG before hydrostatic shock was a factor. As shown here, the PENETRATION on this is good enough for hunting decent sized game!

@hsamalrsam I cetainly agree with most of what you are saying, However in the interests of accuracy, we are seeing shock disruption in bullets with velocities as low as 750 fps. This is based both on the velocity and the bullet configuration. My point would be that it is not merely speed that is the only determining factor.

@faultroy I guess I agree with your statement, but we'd probably disagree in the way we define 'cavitation'. Any projectile can (with sufficient velocity) cause a wound channel larger than its diameter. However, the term 'cavitation' was coined to describe the severe trauma caused when a tiny projectile essentially slammed internal organs outward against the rib cage, thus creating a large cavity (sometimes hundreds of times its diameter), albeit for a short duration.
