I am atheist, but in this debate i'm clearly on the side of Mos Def and Cornel West, especially when West says that religion is violent, but so are empires and economical systems. I support Maher's views on variety of positions, but he really misses the point, when thinks Quran is source of muslim violence. And it's not paranoid to believe that they exist. The existence of a social structure that privileges one group above the other(s) doesn't need every individual of the privileged group to be "conspiring" to sustain that state of affairs. You don't need every rich person to be "conspiring" against the poor to sustain the class differences. Of course some of them counsciously defend the status quo, but it's not a conspiracy.

Anyway, it's a tiny minority of white people who believe in white supremacy, and Mos Def seems to believe that a significant number of white people are in on it. It's not systemic, the vast majority of white people want equality, and are willing to help achieve it. The fact that a problem still exists doesn't mean that white people are causing it.

A way to get there is acknowledging one and for all that white people and their decendants beneffited from slavery of blacks. The controversy about reparations for slavery is a sign that white supremacy is still in effect.
