I just made a shield using this video and I am impressed. The thickness and the weight is just right. For a design, you can use acrylic paint and seal it with a light coat of varnish.
Hey :) I've made and finished the shield, but i have to ask- how do I paint over the foam and duct tape? I need it to be hard wearing as well :) thankyou
@thedon18181 well as he said duct tape comes in many colors.and i'd suggest DUCK brand tape for this, get an exacto knife and make whatever design you want out of it.
oh ya, and also, it i put a piece of the foam completely over it and stuff it with news paper will this help with recoil? i battle friends with nerf swords, and the shields they sell just dont do the job, my friends play very aggressively
@Bramblepath100 Cut the board in a non-circular way? These are just techniques - have fun and just jump in. These same supplies will work for many different shapes. I don't have any more advice than that - I like circles :)
@HomeRushable (in the voice of chief Wigam from the Simpons) Oh, suuure. Let me just make a note about it here on my invisible typewriter. Hmm hm Hmm ;)
1 Question, I do 12th century medieval re-enacting and we use wooden shields with rawhide around the outside and painted linen on the front (to stop the wood chipping as we use blunt steel weapons). Is this ok to use in LARP as my gf wants me to join in with her and if not do the LARP style shields last longer than they look (cos they look to me as if they will fall apart after a few hours of fighting, although that may be because re-enactment fighting is more brutal and I'm used to that).
@MegaMetal4eva you would have to ask your particular group, however, objects made with any amounts of wood or metal are generally prohibited from larpesque games. The shield that was made in the video should stand up well to other larp legal weapons, however, I imagine that if your sheild is made of wood, your re-enactment weapons would tear through the foam shield like butter.
@tomballom yeah, this is the same tactic I used to make a cardboards sword. The problem lies with the foam. You'd have to wrap the foam around the shield in a different manor or leave it out all together based on on the shape.
@KenteousAwe if you place a pin in the center of the cardboard and tie a string to it, and then your cutting tool to the other end (keeping in mind your using the radius size not the diameter) you can use it to cut evenly in a circle. Just duct tape the small hole when your done... :) or just draw the line you will cut along this way but instead of the knife use a pencil or pen..
@Raguel22 I've tried the string but what works better for me is to tape two sharp pencils at the radial distance to a yard stick. Personally I have a larger compass which is essentially what I described but the scoring parts are adjustable. The yard stick works great though. I freehand cut them from there. Just follow the lines.
hi im thinking of makinjg a sheild like this but a few questions first: can you tape the foam onto the cardboard instead of using that spay stuff and can you use only 2 layers of cardboard instead of 4? please reply that would help me out alot. ;)
@BlueDwarf2010 You can make it based on your variations but it will not be nearly as sturdy. Trust me - this design is worth the time you put into it.
I have used Masonite board instead, much sturdier. I also made one from oak planks in the case of my battle shield. Both stopped a real sword. As I do SCA and full contact. But for a light boffer stopper yeah this thing works well to a point.
1/4" plywood is very good, you might want 1/2" for something bigger than 24" diameter. You could also use 5-6 layers of blue foam and put a handle in (cut a square in the first 3 layers) or put the strap through the first 2-3 layers. And quick fact check: Ozark Trail blue camping pad foam is 7/16" thick, not 1/2". A small difference, but it can matter for precise projects.
Hi i live near chicago illinois in a suberb called schaumburg and alot of the places near me have never heard of anything called closed cell foam... also are u using all 4 peices of cardboard or are u only using 2... looks like ur only using 2...
@jjfulmer hi, i live in schaumburg illinois. kinda near chicago and alot of the stores near me never heard of anything called closed cell foam? Were would i be able to get something like this? Also when u glue the cardboard it looks like ur only using 2 peices?
@swordzandspellz17 Howdy neighbor. For more on the different foams, check out my How to build a Foam Sword Level 1 and 2 video. I will also post a link to more information about the supplies in the video description. As for the cardboard, I wasn't kidding, it really is 4 pieces.
@jjfullmer Hi, thanks for the reply... i see the water pool noodles. But they wouldnt be big enough to make a shield =[ =[. I just got back from Home Depot and i bought like foam'ish looking mats u might use when getting out of the shower or something... maybey a 1/2 in width... would those work? I got everything except those darn foam! When i go to walmart should i be looking for Closed cell foam... or camp pad?
Actually, i called in and asked camp pad not "closed cell foam" probably thought i was some sort of insane person haha. Anyway turns out they do carry it woot!

@HandmadeWeaponry can you make a house if so i will make riot shields and combat knives so go away cause i live in a house with my five pet squirrels all named jimmy ha take that ugly face and i have the power to use the internet
@uberownageman This is a great question. The larger you make your shield, the weaker the cardboard will be. My advice is if you go larger than 24" in any direction, use 1/8" or 1/4" plywood. I would also recommend padding it where your arm straps would be and maybe another layer around the edges.
As far as the cardboard is concerned, yes, it is just regular corrugated cardboard like you would find in box construction.
@jjfullmer What if I add more layers of cardboard? I am trying to make a 38 inch diameter shield. However, I want to be able to make it with materials I can find in stores. People recommend thick closed cell foam but you need to order them and it could be costly.
@uberownageman Could work - you'll have to try it and let me know. I would rather try layering cardboard than to spend all that money on thick foam (it will be costly). Best of luck.
@jjfullmer My pipe Insulaters are 3/4" and 1/2 and the other one is 1/2" and 3/8" is that ok because i wasnt able to find the others i live in canada by the way
thx im usin same idea for my viking shield only im using plywood so i can bolt a peg to it (not a fan os strapped shields) same concept essentially great vid dude
@MrZmaster27 trust me, cardboard works great, but add an extra layer of padding. my friend hit and stabbed it full force with non padded pvc and a metal baseball bat.
the bat hurt a little but the sheild barley took any damage(only a little spot where the tape came off
This is vert inventive, but I was wondering if it could be applied to various shapes or sizes of shields. For example, I am used to training with a "heater" style shield and was wondering if you've ever made one like that.
@luisandres09 The difference between you and I is that I've tried it and you haven't... and probably that you aren't a 40 year old bald man. Quit whining and try it! The shields I have made have taken years of abuse and still work great. I know it's hard to think that "cardboard" could be that strong but if you make it like I'm showing you - it is. Remember the immortal advice from Steve Martin, "Criticize things you don't know about" and also "Be oblong and have your knees removed."
@jjfullmer Seems like it would be flimsy to me as well, but I'll give it a try. Also, regarding hand guards. In the few videos I've seen, hand guards were just made with a few layers of foam and then duck taped over. That seems really flimsy to me, is it?
I actually don't use cardboard. i found myself a plastic garbage lid that works perfectly :) only bad thing is after i'm done useing it i got to pretty much remake it again casue my friends love to use big weapons (made out of pvc pipes and foam) and they hammer me down with them :P but its still fun ^^ i don't mind haveing to repair it after i'm done fighting.
@luisandres09 thats why i used plywood....i will admit its kinda weighty, and not that easy to manuver and defend with, and its bout 3 1/2 for that roman looks, but i was applauded on it by my more proffesional larping friend when he came over
lol this wood be a little bit saver thin what me and my friends use we cut of the heads off of golf clubs and thin rap them up in duck tape and for the shields we just make them out of wood and for the straps we have old carped. ya we cut up our hands but not that bad hardy eney blood spills and srry for bad spelling
Great tutorial, jj. The finished product looks really good! I have a question for you though. Lets say I wanted something a bit more resilient than cardboard. Let's say, cut out pieces of lids from those big plastic tubs they sell at Wal-mart. Will the same adhesive stick those together well, or will they just come apart? You look like you've got some know-how, so I thought it would be a good idea to look before I leap, you know?
It would be a tad easier to edge with pvc pipe insulation and pad the inside with camp foam. I use a created duckatape strap and layer 2 layers of tape on the entire shield. I love this giulde though much cheaper than most other guides. 2 thumbs up
It would be a tad easier to edge with pvc pipe insulati and pad the inside with camp foam. I use a created duckatape strap and layer 2 layers of tape on the entire shield. I love this giulde though much cheaper than most other guides. 2 thumbs up
Gosh you're so good at this. I've made 3 shields now and none of them have turned out quite this well. But they are getting better :) Great tutorial my friend.
@brrskater I don't actually LARP I just want to promote the making of these kinds of weapons. My kids have so much fun with them. When the foam weapons come out, everyone in the neighborhood shows up.
To discover a LARP group near you, search the web for groups like, Belegarth, Dagorhir or Amtgard and see where a local chapter can be found. Some are just battle role playing and some involve a full fantasy experience with magic and mythical creatures. Good Luck!
@F0rKilVtHero7ld Yes...you can make a square shield. I'm not sure abotu this style, but me and my friends have made several square shields. I've also seen kite sheilds, roman shields, but i haven't seen a "riot shield" but i guess a slender, tower shield would be similar to a riot shield.
@F0rKilVtHero7ld You can do it - Theses videos are just supposed to offer techniques. Take those techniques and build yourself an awesome square shield or whatever shape you want. If you want to make a bigger shield try using 1/4 inch plywood cut to the shape you want - sand the edges well and don't skimp on the padding around the edges. I'm sure it will be excellent!
well the foam circle fit my premeasured card board circle, if i added smaller circles to give the top a more rounded look on the front side something like the 300 sheilds or does it need to be cut a little larger so the conical shape fits better.
@meertch the thing about those sleds is the straps are on the ends of the sled i think...at least the on i have is...but if that works go for it..u may need new straps idk...
just made this, im a rookie, but it looks awesome, im going to post a vid response soon, just so everyone knows the total cost for materials to make 1 shield would be about 16$ if u buy everything including glue/duct tape the pipe insulators were 3$ the spray adhesive was 5$ duct tape rolls- 6$ foam - 6$ straps- 4$, when u buy the stuff, you get enough to make 2 shields if you dont waste materials, total time for 2 teens with no experience- about 2 hours 15 mins
@sigloz11 many larps use plywood for the core. You would want to check the rules of the game you're going to play beforehand. Pro tip for plywood: Get a nice garage door handle, wrap it with nylon rope and grip tape instead of a strap.
lol, I just used the windshield from my yamaha...took it off cus it looked gay on my bike, and decided it looked like a small kite shield (like Link's).
I just made a shield using this video and I am impressed. The thickness and the weight is just right. For a design, you can use acrylic paint and seal it with a light coat of varnish.

@luisandres09 depends what u are hitting it with were not gonna hit it with a axe XD
yoitscameron1 1 year ago
@luisandres09 thats why i used plywood....i will admit its kinda weighty, and not that easy to manuver and defend with, and its bout 3 1/2 for that roman looks, but i was applauded on it by my more proffesional larping friend when he came over

2 thumbs up
Sugardaddy501 1 year ago
A little complicated but still verry good and economic.

Gosh you're so good at this. I've made 3 shields now and none of them have turned out quite this well. But they are getting better :) Great tutorial my friend.

Hey I'm LDS also where is they closest place to GA where I can play LARP and other games like that please reply thank you.
brrskater 1 year ago
@brrskater I don't actually LARP I just want to promote the making of these kinds of weapons. My kids have so much fun with them. When the foam weapons come out, everyone in the neighborhood shows up.
To discover a LARP group near you, search the web for groups like, Belegarth, Dagorhir or Amtgard and see where a local chapter can be found. Some are just battle role playing and some involve a full fantasy experience with magic and mythical creatures. Good Luck!

@brrskater
Solar is in Georgia. I used to play there years ago. It was awesome fun. Look up Solar: Southern Organization. It's at Hard Labor Creek.

What would you use to make a spartan shield?
8000cheese 1 year ago
please???
F0rKilVtHero7ld 1 year ago
@F0rKilVtHero7ld Yes...you can make a square shield. I'm not sure abotu this style, but me and my friends have made several square shields. I've also seen kite sheilds, roman shields, but i haven't seen a "riot shield" but i guess a slender, tower shield would be similar to a riot shield.
scorpio1108 1 year ago
@F0rKilVtHero7ld You can do it - Theses videos are just supposed to offer techniques. Take those techniques and build yourself an awesome square shield or whatever shape you want. If you want to make a bigger shield try using 1/4 inch plywood cut to the shape you want - sand the edges well and don't skimp on the padding around the edges. I'm sure it will be excellent!

well the foam circle fit my premeasured card board circle, if i added smaller circles to give the top a more rounded look on the front side something like the 300 sheilds or does it need to be cut a little larger so the conical shape fits better.
shaun30club 1 year ago
is it possible to make an evenly surfaced shield without the huge rim? like add another smaller diameter circle of foam to make it look even
mouthforwar17 1 year ago
can i use a sled? it might be curved, but it's easy to foam over and it has hand straps.
meertch 1 year ago
@meertch the thing about those sleds is the straps are on the ends of the sled i think...at least the on i have is...but if that works go for it..u may need new straps idk...

@meertch That's a good base actually

BerserkerVikingRUS 1 year ago
just made this, im a rookie, but it looks awesome, im going to post a vid response soon, just so everyone knows the total cost for materials to make 1 shield would be about 16$ if u buy everything including glue/duct tape the pipe insulators were 3$ the spray adhesive was 5$ duct tape rolls- 6$ foam - 6$ straps- 4$, when u buy the stuff, you get enough to make 2 shields if you dont waste materials, total time for 2 teens with no experience- about 2 hours 15 mins
crazylilkid 1 year ago
same rules for a bigger shield? would it be okay if I used plywood as a core?
sigloz11 1 year ago
@sigloz11 many larps use plywood for the core. You would want to check the rules of the game you're going to play beforehand. Pro tip for plywood: Get a nice garage door handle, wrap it with nylon rope and grip tape instead of a strap.

how does the black foam compare to the blue?

@TheDagguy They are the ame foam. I think the black looks cooler. Also if you plan to use it for Realism it may be better.
