This is my favorite movie of all time. I actually flew to Toronto for the 2009 Fan Expo so I could buy an autographed copy from Barbara Steele who was there at the convention.
I wish that they made more horror movies like this nowadays. It seems that Gothic horror died out after 1975. I think they should bring back this genre of horror.
@benoit4reel Try being 10 years old and watching it before bed on Saturday night...I had some serious trouble getting to bed after this one. To this day, the film still scares me.
Long before America entered into the more violent aspects of horror, Europe was doing it with a ferocity that, while tame by today's standards, still stood out among their contemporaries in a way no other film of today really can.
This is Barbara's best movie, (imho) and it's also her most serious in terms of horror.
And it's very violent for the day also.
This movie uses the human drama to perfectly offset the supernatural goings-on in a way that truly blurs the line between reality and denial very effectively.
The way the horror slowly builds and eventually comes to a head is very scary and leaves the viewer with an uneasy feeling.
Love this movie!! I adore Barbara Steele and all of her movies, she is a a wonderful actress. I am 27 years old but am a big fan of her work and pretty much like everything I have seen her in so far. AmericanEvita is right it is very scary and violent!
I saw this movie on the B movie horror showcse "Macabre Theater" back in 2002/2003 (it later moved to cable) it was hosted by Butch Patrick ...it was very scary and VIOLENT, especially the scene in which the lovers are whipped and electrocuted to death! A very powerful film and outstanding performance by Barbara Steele
I was one of those mid 70's kids who was scared to death of this one too. I saw it on WNEW 5's "Creature Features" that played on Saturday nights at 8.
Barbara Steele was an unusually attractive woman, and anyone who says they DIDN'T want to spend a night with her in the "Castle Of Blood" should rethink the benefits of eternity, ;)
Steele also played Dr. Hoffman in the early 90's remake of the Dark Shadows TV series with Ben Cross as Barnabas.
I saw this as a kid in the mid 70s on TV and it scared the crap out of me. I had trouble getting to sleep for many nights, thinking the woman with half a burned face was going to come into my room.
It should be in the next few weeks,it's supposed do have a commentary with Barbara,it'll be from Dark Sky films I believe, they also just put out another one of her films restored for dvd..'The She Beast'
This movie still scares me to this day long since I first saw it on WNEW 5's "Creature Features" somewhere around the mid 1970's.
The music is a huge part of the atmosphere, and this is a VERY twisted film, and a great example of filmmaking done right. They don't get any better than this.
so happy i met her and got her autograph ... amazing!

She is the first true horror queen!
