when it comes to what light you choose it's either gonna be a metal halide or a high pressure sodium, either of which should have a blue spectrum for best results

vegetative state- 18hours of light a day simply using a few flourescent tubes about 4 foot (depends on your garden)

flowering state- 12hours of light a day using more juice, thats where the mh or the hps comes in, the 12 hours a day imitates fall and should produce some nice bud
