WTF guys?!! On ANY reciprocating engine, the propeller IS the flywheel that carries the momentum from the throw of the crankshaft during the first few revolutions during start and essentially uses raw centifugal forces to prevent the engine from kicking back. If the propeller isnt attached to the engine, the engine will either kick back or sling itself apart. Im very surprised that engine didnt just blow up or chunk a rod
I've been carrying this question for ages now; How does the fuel system work? is the fuel being send in the engine before the supercharger? or in the inlet manifold after the supercharger? Thanks in advance
this man who stands near the 2 fire stop bottles should put them far away from the engine so that if something bad happened he could use them. But as that close to the engine if an explusion happens he and the fire stop bottles will be inside fire.
Impressive! CID? HP? RPM? air or liquid cooled? Is this at an engine show? Why are there entertainment news vids mixed in with stuff for thinking people? Too many questions? Sorry
I upon[ed] this clip because I'm a pure gearhead, yet above all of that ICE stuff, this motor or its predecessors propelled the fighter aircraft that, in the Battle of Britain, denied Herr Hitler a victory of almost incalculable value -- as peterm3964 says in a much subtler manner. Bellicosity aside, were these Royce engines less formidable, the lives of 99% of we Western worlders might be significantly worse than they are today. Take from this video all you like from the aural aspects . . .
If the name has Boeing in it you can assume it is going to be some kind of aircraft. The way the exhaust is pointed I would guess that the person with the helicopter idea may be right, otherwise the fumes would be blowing directly back at the pilot.
everone in the back ground are plugging their ears, then some Einstein is seen with a kid in a stroler stopping by to check out what all the noise is about, kid will need hearing aids by the age of 2
@ChesterMc3 Its out of a boeing vertol 44a twin rotor helicopter. Sherman variants and M3's had continental w670 radial engines. Read the title for once please :(
The "prop" looks to be a stator section (non-rotating part) of a jet engine... pretty brilliant idea to use it as a test prop; it still generates cooling airflow, but won't chop bystanders into cat food, unless they're fed directly into it.
@Syncroincity It's not a "prop" that they've put on there. The description says this engine came from a Boeing Vertol 44A which is a helicopter. The "prop" is the cooling fan that was used on the Vertol as the engine was buried in the fuselage. But it is pretty smart that they left it on for demonstration purposes that you mention..
@mikelagaffe Yes I know it was built for a double rotor helicopter but you already hear and see stuff about cars with engines from different vehicles like a tank and so on. I guess in a truck it would be possible to fit this inside and let it get enough air for cooling - And think about how huge of a parade it could make. Or at least a piece of industrial art.
i cant believe that they started it after that bolt flu out! its just like oh hey its a bolt ooooo shiny i think ill add it to my collection! XD like damn
what is the point in this? or am i just being ignorant? i love all kinds of engines but i still cant see the point of just starting it up, revving it a bit then turning it off. put it in something! actually USE it. just seems such a waste thats all.
@highoctane500 Here let me try to guess. I bet it went something like this. "Hey you going to destroy that aircraft?".... "Yeah it is not air worthy".... "engine work?"... "Yeah but needs little work"...."Shit I want the engine I don't care about the aircraft. I will find some use for it eventually"
@joecooper18 it sounded like shit, a chunk of metal flew off, a safty concern with no explanition and no info in the discreption box, is it rebuild/salvage, whats its purpose, to waste gas/generator? ok its from a Boeing Vertol 44A. really?
Just love that sound <3
