Goes to show that the German environment of Gelnhausen and the German media / record labels / booking agents were very open to experimental sounds and embraced the Monks' music.
It took 35 years for the rest of the world and especially their homecountry to catch up.
See, I think the Monks weren't pre-punk so much as they were pre-psychedelic. These people talk about the pounding, repetitious beat and crazy lyrics; that's more likeable when you're on drugs. They just should've showed up in San Francisco in 1967 and that's where they would've found an American audience who would've appreciated 'em.
WE'RE ALMOST THERE FELLOW MONK FANS! I just checked Amazon and the DVD has appeared on the website but it's not available for pre-order yet. It should be available on March 13th! I'm only hoping they don't push the date back again, they already did it once, it was to be released on Feb. 27th.
THIS JUST IN!!!! The Monks documentary will be released on DVD on Feb. 27th, 2009 but will be available at Play Loud! Productions online store on Jan. 10th, 2009! The DVD will contain 70 minutes worth of bonus footage WHICH WILL INCLUDE all of the Beat Club performances IN THEIR ENTIRETY! It's gonna be MONK TIME all over again in '09 folks!
Thank you so much for posting this. As you know, all of The Monks Beat Club vids have been pulled from You Tube, and I hope this is the first step in bringing them back. I met both Dave (banjo) and Eddie (bass) at the world premiere of this film on July 1st, last year!

Yes, three of the Beat Club clips are shown. "Boys Are Boys," "Complication," and "Oh How To Do Now." It's a great documentary!
