You say you don't get to play it a lot. What is the reason? Is it too heavy to lug to gigs or not terribly versatile? Or you like to keep it protected in your studio? Sorry, but I am just so curious about this drum.
@thislisa well it isn't something I think most people would use on a normal gig for many reasons, the fact it's worth around $5k is one and heavy? Yeah it will hurt you. But I don't play kit for a living anymore and it stares at me most days as if to say - hit me. I can't as much as I like due to schedules and work demand. :^(
@sonordrum I wonder what there intention in making this drum was. Like you say, the weight and price doesn't make it practical for gigging around and the stand is too short for concert so I assume that wasn't their intended audience.
@thislisa well if you know Sonor at all, it's about making the best, most heavy duty -emphasis on heavy - drums around. The whole Signature line in the 80's (the era of bigger is better for everyone) was 12ply wood = heaviest drums around. So this seemed an extension of demanding the best possible drum for the most demanding of clients. Of course there was no need for this drum, but then again, why not? I fought with them to make that extension - but then they made the symphony drums.
I am certain it was you that I was emailing back and forth with about this drum in the early 2000's. I had been in a music store in the early 90's that had one and they got a kick out of asking everyone to pick it up. Years later I was looking for info on this amazing drum that I remembered in the store and the drumset with the copper hardware (Hilite Exclusive) that was also in the store. Your drum will be an awesome family heirloom for generations.
This drum is the crown jewel of my SQ2 kit, unfortunately I don't have it yet :( I should have bought it before 2006 when you could snag one in perfect shape for under 2K, now for a mint you have to cough up $5,000 dollars, damn.
@lidrummer13 Let me tell you ANYONE that pays 5K for ANY snare drum is out of their F#C#ing mind ... Ive heard countless snares wood ,acrylic, metal , carbon fiber they all sounded as good (some better) and NONE of them were over 1K
@timnwa Its not all about the sound. There is a degree of passion for Sonor drums that you can't understand. No one makes a finer drum, you can take the Pepsi challenge on that all day long. Plus, that thing is a marvel of a snare. There is not a classier design on the planet. Look at the paralell strainer, that thing is a genius of an invention and there was only around 200 made. This drum would eat every one of your little helpless snares and ask for seconds. Totally worth it
@unicursalhex Drums are not all about sound? No one makes a finer drum? eat everyone of any helpless snares? tell that to the thousands of artists who have made billions of records and played live with all the helpless snares......
@timnwa Haha exactly, you dont get it. Why do people pay millions for art? I too own many little helpless snares and yes the HLD590 will eat every one of them for breakfast.
@unicursalhex When it all comes down to it, this is a collector's piece. The drum may be worth 5K, but you wouldn't need to spend NEAR that much to get a good sound.
@unicursalhex But the point it that you shouldn't need to pay. Most of the value behind this drum comes from collector's value. It's rare as HELL, so it makes sense, but it's still annoying. In my opinion, sound shouldn't be expensive. It's basically a way of segregating musicians. Now obviously you can't chard the same for basswood and bronze, but I think you get what I'm saying.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX This drum had a list price of $2,100 when it was in production. There was/is nothing on the market made like it, it was well worth the money then and there was a reason it cost so much to make. Has nothing to do with segregating musicians. If you want the best of anything in this world you gotta pay for it
@unicursalhex Again, I understand your point; all I'm saying is that $2,100 for a single drum is overboard. I personally wouldn't ever drop more than around $800 into a snare drum, unless the occasion truly did call for more money, and truly was a justifiable purchase. Also, when I brought up segregating musicians, I was just referring to a perfect world. IMO you SHOULD have the best stuff around, regardless of skill level. Having a good instrument makes playing so much funner.
I've owned this particular drum and the newer version (6x14) and sold both off. Their so heavy to carry around and the weight really doesn't add to the power of the sound. I have a Sonor phonic 5.5x14 thin steel shell that sounds so much bigger. My Ludwig 6.5x14 C.O.B. sounds bigger and so much easier to carry around to gigs. The Sonor bronze is a little too dry sounding for me, I truly think you'll be disappointed in this drum especially for the hefty price you'll pay.
Hello & congrats for this exceptional piece of gear ! I have the piccolo version of it & I must say that I often thought of saving money to find the big one. But there's one parameter that always made me think "forget it "This Drum is so powerful that if you play the all kit it's obvious that this Snare covers everything up... Ths model has been conceived especially for symphonic orchestra & that makes sense. I don't see the point today to buy one so expensive..but...:-)
@awdpth hadi read ur comments, with that other gu 3 or 4 months ago, i wouldhave backed u up cuz i had seen danny with that snare i that lollapallooza vid, and when i sw this vid, i instantly knew i saw him with it back in the day
I am a Sonor junkie, with a 1983 signature bubinga kit. I might have to say this is the greatest drum ever made. Not many compare to this level of innovation and construction.
@afj617 well you have basically my dream kit. I'm thinking about starting to just buy orphans of sig kits just to piece one together!!! You should make a video of your kit (WITH sounds!!!) I'd love to see it.
@sonordrum if this is such a great piece and of such high sentimental value to you, then you should never sell... hand it down to someone who will really appreciate it, when the time comes...
@awdpth i dont think it is, im pretty sure that danny got one made with his kit, you know with the paiste bronze alloy, cuz if you watch him play a switch out his snare drums which he does ocaissionally, the bars arent on the bottom and the lugs arent as big
I've owned several signature sets with signature snars drums. You can take the heads off with a power scew driver instead of 1/2 turns with a key and it taks seconds to remove the heads.
@awdpth Note the opinion of 23DNicholas on the next page of comments:
"Yeah the Danny Carey snare drum is a let down... NOW THIS, this is a snare."
-Even he can tell the difference in sound.
I have trained ears, and went to music school to become a studio artist. In addition, I'm as big a Tool fan as they come. This timbre isn't used in any of Tool's songs. You're the only person that I've heard says otherwise.
@awdpth Alright. I'll bite. Where are you getting your information? Where is your substantiation for this snare? Have you seen it in a dated photo? Were you backstage with Tool at any point?
This snare is unaffiliated with Carey. Before you, I haven't even heard a HINT of this snare being used from any source, and I've heard a lot of rumors. So tell me, where did you get your info? -Or are you just making it up cause you want to believe Danny used this one? So prove it. I already proved mine.
"Yeah the Danny Carey snare drum is a let down... NOW THIS, this is a snare. B-E-A-UTIFUL, my friend, you're lucky to own one. Any idea where I could purchase one of these? I know they stopped making them..."
He can tell a difference as well.
I am as big a Tool fan as there are. Danny doesn't use this snare. Get over it.
@awdpth The DC wasn't called the DC when Danny Carey first had Sonor create it, later, he allowed Sonor to turn the same-spec-ed snare into an artist series. Also, when Danny Carey approached Jeff Ocheltree, they were one-off snares (and drums), not "Ocheltree" snares. I personally have spoken to Jeff Ocheltree about Danny Carey's kit, so I happen to know that the kit and snare is from him. You sir, are the idiot, and would do well to spare the rest of us your ignorance.
@awdpth That's false. This snare drum is unaffiliated with Danny Carey. This is a Sonor HLD 590. It is 5 mm's thick. The drum that Danny Carey used in the 90's is the Jeff Ocheltree Spirit of 2002 14 x 8 snare (drumtree[dot]com[forward-slash]artistdrums). He still uses that same one, but his recording has gotten better. The other drum that he uses on "Sober" is the Sonor 1408 DC Signature Snare (sonor[dot]com). You can definitely hear a difference between the two.
@awdpth It is most definitely NOT the bronze snare that Danny Carey uses. You are mistaken sir. Go to Wikipedia, look up the photo of his kit taken from behind his kit. He actually has two snare drums that he uses on different, a Sonor 1 mm signature 14 x 8, which is thinner sounding than his other, which is a Jeff Ocheltree 14 x 8, and more "primal" sounding. The wiki pic is a picture of his Sonor sig snare. These are the two that he alternates between. Please do not spread misinformation.
Agree with the response to the last comment. I have the Bubinga shell version of this drum, and it is LOUD!!!!! I have had mine from new, circa 1987. Sadly I don't use it very often as the drum is just too loud for much of the music I play now.
i saw you're marimba performances, just one word GENIUS. this is my dream snare, but im happy cause that one is in awesome hands. keep on rocking, funking, jazzing, etc, etc. it.
