For your starter It depends on how you want the game to go. If you want the game to be easier choose Piplup as most of the gyms are weak to him. For intermediate gameplay choose Turtwig as he is effective to some of the same gyms as piplup but not as many. And for a hardcore gameplay choose Chimchar as the gyms will wallop on this puny little monkey making you have to explore for better pokemon that can take on the gyms.

@Klegstad42 Actually I think that it is the opposite, Chimchar is only weak to 3 of the gym leaders and elite four combined and strong against 5 and if you battle every trainer along the way then he should evolve before the fist gym and in the final evolution stages your rival's starter is weak to fighting and Chimchar should be faster so the rival battles near the end of the game are easier in a way.

@Klegstad42 actually, Chimchar makes it much easier. Gym 1: all you need is to evolve and have mach punch. Gym 2: a fire type move and Lv. 22 Gym 3: Lv. 28 and fire type move Gym 4: Lv. 32 and fire and fighting type move Gym 5: hopefully you will have a grass type like Roselia and use a grass type move and also poison and just stall till Gyradaos dies. Gym 6: Lv. 36 and fire and fighting type move Gym 7: Lv. 41 and fire and fighting type move Gym 8: Lv. 48 and fire and fighting type moves.

My first starter ever was Treeko so I have a soft spot for the grass starters. Thats why I recommend Turtwig. Since there are like 2 type-triangles in the starters in the 4th generation it doesn't really matter IMO.

Hm, all starters are great in their own way: Infernape is very speedy and can learn powerful attack moves, Empoleon is mixed, and Torterra is very defensive and has decent moves.

btw if u dont have a team ill suggest one for u :) Empoleon, Staraptor, Gallade, Roserade, Houndoom, and Jolteon...and if u dont want any of those some other awesome pokemon are garchomp, espeon, luxray, Gardevoir and Bastiodon/Rampardos :) hope that helps in choosing a team!
