@arodgerson You're Not a hunter... if you WERE you'd know deers move their head more than there body, and that a bullet takes time to travel (not including wind gusts), so even if you were dead on when you took the shot you'll probably end up just injuring it where it might live hours or days before dying but you weren't able to harvest it.
Aiming for the head on the first shot is the STUPIDEST Thing you could do, and only something someone would say without thinking it through...

Use a jacket round, cut or grind tip down 1/16th use a very fine metal saw thin blade or circular cutter to crosscut tip, drill out down center of tip hollow-point style 1/4 and fill with hot glue smooth with fine sand paper or your wife's emery board for easy of cambering, glue will melt as it leaves muzzle. Now you have a little less weight but upon impact the round will not go through and through, more humane quicker kill and less chance of losing runaway animal. Good hunting from Alaska.
That was a nice clean shot. Sham the round was so crap. Ether you had closed to under its optimum killing range or the round was faulty. I never used to use full metal as it has the tendency to go though and though like this. Hear in the UK we look for about 13 to 1500jules on contact with the target as about right for dear. @anthproduct Ummm, I'm not trying to sound make it sound like your not a hunter, but its required to wear fluorescent orange when hunting deer and elk.
This is why I shoot only of the prey is facing directly at me or directly away from me. That way the bullet will travel though the length of the animal breaking the spine, puncturing the lungs destroying the heart and the brain and dropping the animal on the spot. Also the lengthwise shot imparts such trauma...it tenderizes the meat.
@ConfucianScholar I NEVER take a lengthwise shot. Them guts stink WAY too bad when you're cleaning one. And a well placed shot in those lungs and heart... Yeah, they'll run off. But not very far at all, and that 'vitals' blood is awful easy to track.
hey who knows mabye u just bareley missed the vitals and it made it clean through i would say aim about 3 inches up and 4 to the right that should put you right at the heart, my dad always told me shoot right behind the shoulder blade, that will make sure you get the heart and lung and make for a quick cleam kill
@goldenmonkey130 Sorry, That was double lung, 3 " lower and just a touch left would be the heart. Your placement would be nearly a spine shot and behind the ribs. Liver or gut at best.
@goldenmonkey130 Even if you miss the heart and lungs by 4 or 5 inches, the shock wave off of any decent hunting caliber will be catastrophic enough to completely obliterate the vitals. Watch some slow motion footage of ballistics gel being shot.
@426CubicInches yea that is true if you have a high powered rifle like a 270, 300 or 7 mag ( just some examples) that will be enough to kill a deer, ive killed many of them even by missing the vitals
Try bringing your shot 4-6 inches forward and about an inch lower. They don't run that way. Lung shots are runners. And it didn't get knocked down, it just ran. What are you using? Your bullet may be too heavily constructed for the small game.
My dad and I went hunting today and I shot a doe. It's called bring a head light that you put on your head. We searched for my deer for an hour and a half with the owner of the land. He is going to see if he can find it tommorow morning. But you always bring some kind of flashlight it's just comon sense. Think people Think.

Use a jacket round, cut or grind tip down 1/16th use a very fine metal saw thin blade or circular cutter to crosscut tip, drill out down center of tip hollow-point style 1/4 and fill with hot glue smooth with fine sand paper or your wife's emery board for easy of cambering, glue will melt as it leaves muzzle. Now you have a little less weight but upon impact the round will not go through and through, more humane quicker kill and less chance of losing runaway animal. Good hunting from Alaska.

That was a nice clean shot. Sham the round was so crap. Ether you had closed to under its optimum killing range or the round was faulty. I never used to use full metal as it has the tendency to go though and though like this. Hear in the UK we look for about 13 to 1500jules on contact with the target as about right for dear. Or at lest we did when I still hunted.

@Bearcats2818 regional colloquial expression. Just like bread basket means stomach, keister means butthole, chops means mouth or lips. ,etc, etc. ad nauseaum. The boiler room is the heart of a factory that has a boiler, literally a large drum that boils water to make steam to power equipment.

Good heart/lung shot. And they don't drop right down dead with a heart shot. They run off and drop when the blood pumps out. Good shot placement.

This is why I shoot only of the prey is facing directly at me or directly away from me. That way the bullet will travel though the length of the animal breaking the spine, puncturing the lungs destroying the heart and the brain and dropping the animal on the spot. Also the lengthwise shot imparts such trauma...it tenderizes the meat.

@ConfucianScholar I NEVER take a lengthwise shot. Them guts stink WAY too bad when you're cleaning one. And a well placed shot in those lungs and heart... Yeah, they'll run off. But not very far at all, and that 'vitals' blood is awful easy to track.

hey who knows mabye u just bareley missed the vitals and it made it clean through i would say aim about 3 inches up and 4 to the right that should put you right at the heart, my dad always told me shoot right behind the shoulder blade, that will make sure you get the heart and lung and make for a quick cleam kill

@goldenmonkey130 Sorry, That was double lung, 3 " lower and just a touch left would be the heart. Your placement would be nearly a spine shot and behind the ribs. Liver or gut at best.

@goldenmonkey130 Even if you miss the heart and lungs by 4 or 5 inches, the shock wave off of any decent hunting caliber will be catastrophic enough to completely obliterate the vitals. Watch some slow motion footage of ballistics gel being shot.

Try bringing your shot 4-6 inches forward and about an inch lower. They don't run that way. Lung shots are runners. And it didn't get knocked down, it just ran. What are you using? Your bullet may be too heavily constructed for the small game.

My dad and I went hunting today and I shot a doe. It's called bring a head light that you put on your head. We searched for my deer for an hour and a half with the owner of the land. He is going to see if he can find it tommorow morning. But you always bring some kind of flashlight it's just comon sense. Think people Think.
