  • Elaine Paige is perfection. This never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

However I don't think Jemimas voice suits her character... she's a good singer but she doesn't sound clear and innocent enough to be Jemima in my opinion...

  • I never thought I would be able to find a version I liked more than the filmed version, I was wrong.

  • Better than the filmed version <3

  • i cnt decide if i love Elaine or Betty better. its a hard choice.

  • Elaine did much better here than she did in the film. I was never a big fan but now I am after this performance. Still...Betty Buckley All the Way!!! YEAH MISS COLLINS!!!

  • @Mistanyycguy

That is Jemima, or as some like to call her Sillabub. She is the youngest kitten in the musical.

  • Can someone tell me who that is starting at 3:11?

  • this makes me sad

    memories i guess

  • when was this?

  • all i can say is, HOLY SHIT!

  • What a great performance--she makes me believe in her pain and sorrow and hope and expectation for a new life. This is what music is really all about!

  • @ 0:19 is that aeva may??? the movie demeter

  • This is my favorite Musical in the world!(: I love it so much, I basically know all the cats names and I can sing each song word for word...

  • I saw this musical live and when she came in stage I'm like oh no...the she sang and I'm like..WOAHHHHH!!! SHES GOOD!

  • 面對這麼好的作品,連讚楊,都覺得高估了自己的權力。我怎麼有資格給你什麼評價呢?只須臣服在如此動人的樂聲之下...

  • British west end soooooo rocks so many fantastic show's year after year

  • Has anyone noticed that when Eliane hits certain notes she sounds like she does in the video....?

Oh but wow this is really good.....

Does Ken Page perform in this version?

  • @thebeatles4ever99 This was Brian Blessed who was from the Original cast and the original actor to play tugger in London (I think Paul Nichols was his name but don't quote me).

  • Every time when I see elaine performs this or even any other song, it must be have a little bit different.

So I never feel bored or be tired to listen and see them all. Although they have different, but the passion of elaine doesn't change or reduce. That's the reason why I love Elaine

  • she doesnt sound as powerful as she could sound. but she still did really good :)

    this jemima kinda sucks

  • @redvelvetqueen24 Original Broadway Sillabub (US equivalent of Jemima) was worse...so I'm okay with this.

  • There's something in her phrasing here that just MAKES this performance.

  • I always like Elaine's version of this song more than any other sing's -- She's not playing Grizabella, she IS Grizabella the Glamour Cat!

  • Look at the Tugger's action and expression -- no wonder he is so popular among kittens.

  • @HingYok heehhe Tuggers my cats name....

  • Who IS that Jemima?? She's very good (although I do think that the originals are always the best)

  • I knew of Elaine Paige loooooong before Susan Boyle. I had the original London Cast recording of Cats on tape when I was a kid and played it till it wore out. Was always mesmerized by her performance. I also had Betty Buckley's version on a best of ALW collection, but I always preferred Paige's version. It just seemed much more vulnerable and genuine. There's a lot more to this song than how well you can hit the high notes.

  • Excellent !

  • What always bothered me about Elaine Paige is that is permanently sounds like she is saying, "Touchy it so easy......" She doesn't bother to pronounce the "m" sound in me and it really bothers me.

  • @sweetfuckingchrist If it bothers you that much then don't listen. Just sayin is all

  • @sweetfuckingchrist some singers do that to make the line sound better...plus,pronouncing the m makes it harder for the singer to keep their breath..Memory is a very hard song to sing if you sing it as instructed,sooo......yeah.:)

  • I love Elaine Paige's version of Memory!!

  • I was lucky enough to see Elaine Paige play Norma Desmond in "Sunset Blvd" on Broadway in 1996...it was just simply stunning! Her "touch me" in this version always makes me well up... : )

  • No one, I repeat, NO ONE, can EVER replace Elaine Paige for Grizabella!

  • Soo pretty.

This Jemima is soo adorable, but no "THE JEMIMA"

    I love it!

  • I've had the opportunity to see Cats the Musical in my country. Grizabella was played by the incredible Lea Salonga. I felt kinda overwhelmed, it was the closest to watching a real live Broadway musical that I could get. I would gladly want to see this song performed on stage by Elaine Paige someday.

  • fantastica , sorprendente , ver la gracias ,

  • was this really live in 2009??

  • WHEN SHE SAIS "LOOK"!! OMG I LOVE HER!!

  • cats has been my favorite musical since i was five years old. i have heard and seen countless renditions. to this day, none can move me like elaine page. it is simply beautiful.

  • Gives me goosebumps every time I listen.

  • I love this song. So much. I wish I could sing it wit as much emotion and perfection as Elaine... but sadly that's hard to duplicate. I love ittt.

  • hmm..im assuming that isnt Veerle Casteleyn

  • @dandandamattressman It's not. It's Kimberley (spelling?) Partridge

  • her voice is awesome obviously..its elaine paige....however it's her interpratations and phrasing that is exquisit for me...you believe her more than anyone

  • Chills man, chills.

  • every time i newly hear her do the "touch me" line, she makes me cry. shes amazing! the best grizabella in my opinion.

  • Elaine, Mechastriesand, and Buckley. Three strong versions. Nothing beats the original though.

  • I just heard an interview with Elaine in which she said Dame Judy Dench was to play this part but hurt her foot and ALW called her just a few days before the opening. This is the only song she does in the play. I never really realized that..I've never seen the play.

  • i've always wondered were grizabella and old deuteronomy related they seem to have the same skin

  • 3:40

  • how long ago was this?

  • I think it was 1998.

  • @TailaStump

Elaine was the original Grisabella in the fisrt production on London, when the production come to broadway, grisabella was betty buckley.ç

I've seen a lot of times diferent versions of memory, with diferent singers, and Elaine Paige is the only one for me, she is the best, and I love so much when she says "touch me..."

  • Elaine Paige is just perfect!!!!!!

  • WOW, raw emotion! Loved it! Almost made me cry...

  • Elaine is better here than the filmed version. Finally, a version with her "Touch me...." that rivals Betty Buckley's. Her voice is simply majestic here!

I thought this Jemima is very cute! ^^ But no other Jemima can compare to Helen Massey's voice in the filmed version, which is simply out of this world. ;)

  • I disagree. Check out Sarah Brightman's interpretation of Jemima. For convenience, it's the featured video on my channel. She was the first and original Jemima, and has now become a star in her own right.

  • "...rivals Betty Buckley's..."

Uhhh....you do know that Elaine Paige was the original Grizabella right?

  • No comparison in my mind! Elaine is just superb!

  • @mayya09 Elaines "touch me" is ALWAYS better than Bettys! Elaine has an amazing strong voice and Betty has a sqeaky, freaky voice!!!!!!!!! + Betty can't act at all!

    ELAINE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!! <3

  • @EmilijaEma You need to get lost. Nobody in their right mind thinks that Betty has a "squeaky" voice- you are THE only person who thinks that. She's admired by countless Broadway fans alike.

AGAIN- I disagree strongly with you. While Elaine has a strong voice, she, in almost every performance of this song, cannot pronounce "Touch me"- it sounds like "Tou-chee" You can also tell that she takes a lot more strength to physically sing the climax than Betty, who sings the note with much more ease.

  • @noodle0912 From what planet r u?

  • @EmilijaEma Mustafar.

  • @noodle0912 Your observation is irrelevant. That fact that Betty can hit the high notes with more ease simply points to the fact that her vocal placement is higher than Elaine's. This is musical theater, not bel canto. there are 1001 things going on here artistically and none of them have to do with her diction or tessitura. If i judged every performance by one high note, I'd be complete moron. Especially in musical theater.

  • @flicfan416 I'm not attempting to belittle Elaine's singing abilities, I'm defending Betty Buckley because the moron I replied to keeps bashing her for the most irrelevant of reasons.

......'cause, y'know, heaven forbid someone is in the same league as her precious Elaine Paige.

  • @flicfan416 Exactly. Just because someone can hit higher notes doesn't make them a better singer.

  • @noodle0912 That's the only basis for you're argument? Because she can hit the higher notes with ease? Just because someone can hit a high note, doesn't make them a better singer

  • @EmilijaEma I agree with you! ;)

  • @mayya09 i agree

  • @mayya09 i agree i don't like the duet that they do

  • Elaine Paige never fails to impress me...the Jemima leaves something to be desired though...

  • Have watched many of EP's video clips on You Tube, this one is without a doubt the best visual clarity of them. The song sung by Ms. Paige is always the top.

  • innerhappiness.....

you should've known elaine BEFORE susan boyle.

  • What a stunning performance - how could people not have heard of this magnificent actress!!!

  • This performance is classic, let me have the urge to cry

  • i wonder what year this is from???

  • It's from 1998.
