  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF!

  • That nigger can play the shit out of that trumpet.

  • I'm curious if he's gonna have people with him on his mini tour. I'm counting down the days til his Toronto shows. Boy would I love to hear this combo.

  • Thank you Jeff.

  • this night was awesome. two friends me and a hit of acid a piece. fantastic! it also happens to be my best friends favorite artist. i put him up on my shoulders so he could see. i miss that guy

  • @matt1otto That sounds fucking amazing.

  • How many opportunities do you get to sing happy birthday to a musical genius. Also, this makes me want to play the singing saw.

  • i want to hug him

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha 2:51

    'shuttheuckup!"

    made me giggle

  • Good god this melts me. So happy this is real life.

  • That was freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing man.

  • the camera flash is kind of a piss off. Jeff's voice rules all.

  • I'm going to learn how to play the trumpet just so I can play this song on it. Badass =]

  • i love to come watch this video every so often. it seems like such a magical, intimate show. am i the only one who still has hope jeff will do a few more shows like this one in the future? i hope not... he's incredible.

  • . It's the barre of G, A and C, then G again. depending on how you do your standard barre chords in normal tuning, it can look like your just moving f.

  • In case anyones wondering the chords for this song is just F, sliding from 3 to 5 to 8. IMHO it sounds better going from 1 to 3 to 6.

  • In case anyones wondering the chords for this song is just F, sliding from 3 to 5 to 8. IMHO it sounds better going from 1 to 3 to 6.

  • in case anyones wondering the chords for his song is simply F. Starting on the 3rd fret, sliding to 5 then to 8. IMHO it sounds better beginning on 1st fret, then 3 to 6

  • @thefrenzee yeah it kinda looked different. but its a gibson i know that much.

  • i fucking want that guitar :D ( left handed of course)

  • look up the defenition of music, and theres gonna be a big ass picture of jeff, jullian, jeremy and scott.

  • @Twooheadedboy actually it turned out to be slipknot and ll cool j. How sad is that?

  • @awesomej13 haha, i guess some people are brain washed from being fed garbage that they caant hear the music they play in heaven. :)

  • what kind of guitar is that

  • what kind of guitar is that

  • @ZombieInvasion5446 gibson es-125

  • @angelzyt43 I don't think that's an ES-125 -- If so, then I've never seen an ES-125 that looked like that + a maple fretboard.

    For reference, I own an 1953 ES-125

  • @leifrksn1 this is my new account, and its a 1964 gibson es-125 T... i did my research. although this doesnt look as thin, its a es 125, i promise.

  • @Twooheadedboy Interesting. Nice. I've never seen one like that. I always thought ES-125's used rosewood fretboards not maple.

    Nice find

  • @leifrksn1 i dont think this is a 1964 it could be a newer one, maybe a 70...because the actual 64 is has a rose wood fret board.

  • This is awesome. Jeff has aged well, but it's really showing. It's almost sad seeing him perform again after all those years. But he still has it. I wish I wasn't 2 when he ended NMH. 8[

  • @xraistlininblackx Dude he looks better now.

  • all those rude comments just let the man play

  • i cant believe he played my town and i didn't know :( jeff used to play here a lot because of his E6 buddies but doesn't any more. and to think all of those obnoxious comments in the background, just let the man make music

  • Do people actually hear what he is saying - if theres a taste in this life more inviting, then watch as the sweet babies crawl..

    Damn, i mean. puhhhh, damn

  • i love you jeff

  • what's needed is a jeff mangum/NMH archive where all these great scraps of video and audio can be collected and enjoyed in one spot. is there a website out there like that?

  • What does Jeff say at 2:33?

  • @Bahomme hey guys is this in tune man

  • Just dont wake up the horses

  • This is incredible! I would love to hear some new music from Jeff, or NMH together.

  • look up "sign the dotted line" by Jeff... Was recorded earlier this year.

  • Closest yet to a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion. :D

  • jeff, julian & scott are still so spectacular.

  • 3:00

  • god damn those people are luckyyyy

  • why has this been thumbs downed?

  • i have no idea.

  • "I love you!" "yay..."

  • Is that robert schneider with the "It's Jeff's birthday should we sing him happy birthday?"

  • I think so

  • yup, it sure is!

  • The genius underneath that hat is way better than that hat itself. It's just a hat.

  • no one knows how much I wish I was there.

  • i have an idea...

  • this man will live forever

  • oh and what kind of hat is he wearing?

  • I really want to know too...

  • i just found out, it's a "gatsby" / "newsboy" hat.

  • hah, me too. i just came to post that too.

  • This shows that Jeff is still a beautiful singer, just as how he was years ago. He NEEDS to begin touring and recording again...I miss him.

  • Internetz to anyone who can share a tab or sheet music for The Fool.

  • To whomever recorded this, thank you.

These were moments not to be lost.

  • the effect of the camera flashes behind him is awesome. it's like he's all by himself in the dark, and then he's suddenly surrounded by people, then he's by himself again.

kind of describes his life right?

  • this has to be the best live performance of any band i have ever seen..

this is just so beautiful its magical.. blew me away.

  • hero

  • this video always makes my heart flutter

  • I still can't believe I was right there. That night was epic. From the concert in the old round stable to the moment where jeff got on stage and said follow me. The entire place was filled with excitement as we walked out into the bluegrass of a KY field. Amazing! Jeff played and sang engine with Julian plating the saw. I will always remember this.

  • As soon as he opened his mouth, my heart exploded. Jeff Magnum, I'll love you forever.

  • i love how everyone id flashing away at jeff.

it brings coolness to the video.

  • the legend lives on.

    <3

  • this video is beyond magical

  • I think it's so amazing how devoted these people are to him. Someone mentioned a second coming, very appropriate metaphor. Thinking of how many people are impacted by him alone nearly brings me to tears. Someone who can touch that many people, that deeply, is truly special. I'm sure Jeff would hate me for saying this, but that to me is what a god is, someone who is completely benevolent and kind and incredibly sincere and inspiring.

  • haha that is not a god

  • PLEASEE come back. the world needs more of this, i woulda given anything to have been there

  • these lucky BASTARDS

  • i wish i could have been there... jeff mangum is still so amazing.

  • this is awesome.but sometimes i feel that julian and scott are left out from being accredited. they were in nmh too. but this is probably this best video of the 08 tour yet.awesome.

  • Julian is really really good in his band The Music Tapes. It's something else. He's as talented as Jeff, if not more.

  • I cried :|

  • Jeff, your commitment to music inspires me to become a focused musician. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Are you hoping Jeff reads in your commen or something?!

  • commitment? he kinda stopped!! yeah sure he plays with O.T.C and has been a little more active, but still. i mean, he disappeared and pretty much abandoned the fans of his music. I cant blame him. You have to do what makes you happy. He is my fav musician. well, aside from John cage. say his music inspires you! not his commitment!!! thats just....i mean, what?

  • I'm not saying commitment in the sense of performing. Jeff has been putting stuff together away from the public eye, he is still committed MUSIC despite his so called "inactivity" after NMH broke up. I was talking about commitment to music, you are talking about commitment to the fans. Other than that, I agree with you. :)

  • Granted, i know its weird that i know this, but jeff was born on August 10th, 1970. Why are they singing happy birthday?

  • id say because it was good for jeff to know that all these people care about him. like, singing happy birthday to him because you love him only because someone said "its jeff's birthday"

  • It's beautiful. The camera flashes are the perfect light show.

  • quite frankly, these are two of nmh's greatest songs. The fool always brings me to tears.

  • just great.

i know a lot of people have been waiting to hear from him for a long time

    just great.

  • Simply amazing.

  • The more I look at the guitar, I don't think its a Gibson es125. Little details like the white surround, no knobs...or pick guard. Also, this is not an acoustic/electric. Thats an aftermarket pickup(cord running from it). I'm thinking an old junk guitar would suit Jeff....Maybe an old Silvertone? I would like to know what guitar it is.

  • You may be right. In older live videos (c. 1997 or 1998), he is definitely using an ES-125 (without a pickguard) but this may be a different guitar. I myself own an ES125t and the neck is rosewood while the neck in this version appears to be maple. Also, the sunburst is a lighter shade. And Gibson only made one version (That is with the darker sunburst and rosewood neck).

  • qué bonito, por fin algo de él :D

  • Its good he's back.

  • I think in a way he sounds better.

  • holy moly, what a night.

  • Amazing. Absolutely fantastic.

  • At last! The second coming of Mangum!

  • It fits the Jesus metaphor. There are trumpets.

  • DO you think Jeff knows how good he really is? His melodies are incredibly moving and insipiring the kind of music that give you goose bumps!!

  • Thanks for posting. I'm glad he's back- hopefully he stays back. Does anybody know what king of guitar that is he's playing?

  • Gibson ES 125?

  • I sang happy birthday to him. Whether it was a prank or not it was the best concert moment of my life.

  • He sounds better then he did 10 years ago. Holy crap. O_O I'm blown away by how amazing this event is in its entirety. Beautiful.

    Thank you Jeff!

  • I don't agree that he sounds better than he did 10 years ago. But still - REALLY good.

  • His birthday is August 10th.

    Why is it his 'birthday?'

Was his friend just pranking him? Confusing.

  • ...your going by wikipedia?

that entry was added with no source.

  • There's multiple sources, other than Wikipedia, which suggest that's his birthday.

    I'm actually not sure.

After all, my friends have, at restaurants, said that it was 'my birthday' to prank me ;)... I wouldn't be surprised if these guys did the same.

I also wondered if it had some type of other meaning.

Until documented evidence appears, I'll remain uncertain.

  • im sure that he said it was jeffs birthday just to show him how much everyone cares about/for him.

  • does a girl say "oh my god, i think im gonna cry" around 4:00? because i would like to say im right there with you.

  • THANK YOU for posting this! I could kick myself because i live close enough I should have been at this show. Well, here's hoping that Jeff comes out of the dark & starts making music again. Damn, his voice was right on even after all that time not performing. Love it love it love it!

  • *trumpet*

  • this really is the best video on youtube

  • happy birthday Jeff! :D

  • I'd give so much to have been there. That looked and sounded just incredible.

  • Oh god. How I love him. Jeff Mangum you have the most beautiful soul.

  • this is a really nicely recorded video for such a sudden performance.

and the mangum makes it even better.

  • damn man. i wish i could have been there.

  • There is a God... and his name is Jeff Mangum.

  • what makes this lame?

  • 2:48.

  • Ha. That was me saying "thank you". Incredible night and music.

  • probably the best video on youtube

  • Beautiful, fills my heart

  • I'm not sure I'll ever forgive myself for leaving the show early after seeing this

  • I'm the asshole who's head covers up half of the frame when Jeff plays!

    Hurray!

  • holy shit, new animal collective album, and jeff mangum's playing shows? the world's going to fucking explode any minute.

  • Thank you!

  • I've been waiting for this for a very long time.

  • thanks for this. much appreciated.

  • awesome. i love everyone singing happy birthday. i wish i could've quit my life for a day to be there!!!

  • Fantastic! thanks for the video!

  • This literally was a surprise.

  • Best video I've seen. And I thought the footage I got was good.

  • totally was right there. amazing.
