@chindian123 as someone who's getting into the video game industry as a character modeler let me just say that you are a person who I look up to. One day I want the quality of my work to equal that of yours :D
can i swear on youtube??? cause this is fucking amazing!!! dude... you got skills... people like you are my inspiration... am going to college for this, i have worked as a freelancer for environment modeling as i learn quick, but i just got into character modeling... i can say am learning quick... but damn, i wanna be on a level similar to yours soon... amazing stuff... good rigging by the way
I use mainly Maya and XSI. I do majority of my modeling in XSI - Maya for everything else. Zbrush I use primarily for sculpting altho I sometimes model some stuff in it also. All these programs are just tools... so get used to extruding, etc... that's part of the modeling process.
@chindian123 you're using Xsi instead of Maya? Why? im a 3Dmodeler just for fun and going to take courses next year to find a job... and I want to know wich is better cuz I like Maya and XSI seems good too
and You get used of extruding..? so how are you modeling? surface modeling? Sculpting?
You man probably have a fucking good job cuz you're one of the best I saw out here...
Doesn't matter man... whatever you're comfortable with... don't get caught up in the programs... it's the end result that matters. Especially with modeling. U can model in whatever and just export FBX or OBJ. I like XSI cuz of the selection and modeling tools. But u can do the same thing in maya.
Nothing special to how i model... extruding, pushing pulling verts, etc... just practice.
Hey man this is really inspiring. Do you have any tips for lighting? All I do is throw in a couple vray lights and turn on GI. But my stuff looks like trash compared to this. Oh by the way, how did you get the idea to make an old elf? Considering elves are immortal and all. Oh! Also, do you have a MSN? I'd love to talk with you. If you do, send me a PM! Thanks in advance!
Hey skull5005... i dunno - lighting is pretty simple for me - no GI or anything fancy - just a couple of spot lights... sometimes i use FG - but not usually. Most of this reel didnt have FG or GI.
The elf kinda just happened - i didnt really plan on doing an elf - i was just doodling in zbrush one day - looking at some references for old guys and ended up with him... haha. I never even thought i'd finish it. But i guess that's how some pieces happen...
I dont remember. I had to replace the audio due to copyright issues on youtube - so it's one from the songs youtube provides... i think it's by a group called 12 stones.
Originally I had some music from MuteMath - Chaos. Youtube them - they're really cool
Oh yeah it's cool. But really I'd love to talk with you, I have so many questions lol. I won't give it out. If you change your mind just send me a PM :)
But I don't see why you think you have to go out of your way to disrespect someone else's belief...
Especially if you think there is no God - then it's of no consequence is it? Without a God - then there's no real moral code, or purpose or fate that I am disrupting by my belief in what you believe to be a non-existent entity...
So I think the better question is why do you feel so obligated to disrepute the existence of God on my video wall?
two questions. did you use z brush? can Z brush completely replace 3dsmax? ive been looking at some videos and it looks WAAAAAAY easier to model organic objects in z-brush than in 3dsmax.
It really depends man - I love to model in zbrush...you can model everything in zbrush... however I still find it useful to have an external poly modeling program suchas Maya, XSI or 3DSMAX as they would have a full range of poly editing tools. In the end - it's not the program that makes the models good...
Zbrush is just a tool. With that said tho - it's the best sculpting tool on the market right now in my opinion. (However in terms of shading, lighting and animation - u'll want another prog.)
No - simply that the why behind morals... true that you can be taught morals - however the why behind what makes something wrong doesn't really make much sense without a belief in God. Otherwise - something isn't necessarily wrong - it's just not preferred, or socially unacceptable, or not convenient to the continuation of the species... but to speak of something being existentially morally wrong in itself only can happen if there's a God to whom we're ultimately accountable.
Well maybe you should think of it that way. That nothing is wrong, just culturally not acceptable. Unless you are saying that your morals are correct and no one else's are. Because I am sure if you lived in a cannibalistic society, not eating people would be wrong.
That's exactly the point I'm bringing though... without some sort of absolute to which right and wrong can measured up to... then they become a subjective opinion and not an objective fact.
However - in a world view such as that - you don't have the right to call anything actually wrong or evil... because then evil does not exist as things are just either a matter of personal preference or cultural acceptability...
so masacres, rape, murder, genocide - those things cannot be called evil in such a world view.
All that I am saying is that without a concept of God or some form of absolute truth or moral code - you cannot even begin to talk about right and wrong, good and evil since those would not exist
For me personally,a world such as this doesn't make sense - as we all have an 'instinctive' conscience that convicts us of right and wrong... making sense of a world without right and wrong becomes impossible.
Anyways - as much as I do enjoy a good debate - i feel here is not the place for it... (On my demo reel) hehe.... so if you'd like to continue it - i'd happy do so via email... it's always interesting hearing other people's view points.
So anyways - thanks for the comments and hope you enjoyed the reel! Sorry for the long philosophy debate.. haha
Haha - yea. Well you are entitled to your own opinions! ;-)
Thanks man... I went to school in Tampa for 3 yrs then ended up switching to VFS after that... plus I've been working freelance about a year now - so that's about 5 years I guess. I really need to update my reel though... hoping to have a new one by the beginning of 2010 with my newer stuff...
i have some questions if not minded, when i subdivide my model, it get's really wheird (and not smooth), i know that there must be a lot of segments in a corner to get the correct result when subdividing, but it just doesn't seem to work on something realistic like some part of the human body for example..
i want to be a 3D character game artist,
it's my dreamjob; sometimes,i switch sleep time with model time xb.
Something by 12 stones i think??? Not sure - but i know the band is 12 stones... i had to replace the original soundtrack on my reel here cuz of youtube's policy on music rights....
I gotta say that elder wood elf looking ranger looks amazing, I keep coming back just to look at that. I look at it and he seems like he has so many stories to tell :D...I hope you could find the time to make a video about him :3,,,also did you have any concept art for him? or was it on a pure whim.
Thanks. Maya, XSI are great programs... but i'd recommend you go get some training in 3D - either do a course or a school if you're serious about doing 3D. Best of luck man!
That character at the beginning is really strong. He's got so much personality, and you did such a great job bringing him to life. I feel like he could talk at any second. : D awesome work.
FENOMENAL design! and rigging and all! its just super awesome!
I've more or less learned all those things I need to do such serious design rigging animation etc and I've been into it all for qquite some time intensively and the only thing stopping me so far is two words - RENDER TIME. :( :( :( :(
I bet that all the renders from this video together took you about half a year to render? :(
Not really... took about maybe 2 weeks to render the superman and beast... about 4 days for the director and maybe about a week and half for the elf... U just gotta know how to light without FG or GI... it's pretty quick and everything is normal mapped anyways - so no displacement to calculate.
Yeah FG just rocks but it slows the rendertime significantly.
And WOW for normal maps!? I thout those were all displacements!?
You are really great at optimization...You make me one step closer to giving up from Displacements and using simply normal maps, but then again seams on normal maps make me don't wanna use them at all :(
I mean when you, for example, export the normal maps from Zbrush, and put it on the model in some 3D software like Maya there will always be seams on the places where UVs are separated...I mean on the border edges of UVs...
I can't believe that never happened to you :)
I spent weeks and weeks in finding a way to somehow adapt it together(while constantly repeating "HOW HAAARD IT COULD BE to simply say to PC - FREAKIN FIND EDGES AND MERGE THEM VIRTUALLY!!!" :D
Nope - never had that problem... Once you have ur settings properly setup in zmapper it should do it perfectly. Maybe try turning up the seam overpaint a little if you continue having that issue... otherwise - it could be a problem with your UV layout.
I think I figured it out in my mind...its probably the same thing that seams out my Displacement maps, I think its definitely about those "mrg group" thingies in export tab in Zbrush...
I'll definitely check it out once I fix my other PC(this one can't handle the Zbrush).
wow dude you are really fantastic modeler. those models are pure cg work! you should get a work in any industry. and hows that possible that with such skills you are doing only freelance work?
This is a well put together reel. I've been searching high and low for reels that break away from the 360 turn cliche. You are implying that "God" is the only reason you have morals. As if having morals cannot be taught by parents or any other authority figure.

Seems that your reason for having morals is that punishment would await you if you didn't. Fear is your motivation for acting civil?
It makes sense in that this is the only time you have, therefore it is much more precious then were it not.
