No matter how many times I watch this show it just keeps getting better. Quite honestly, my favorite television show of all time. I love every second of this program and it's such a joy to own the complete series. I never grow tired of it and enjoy it every time.
1876 Deadwood. The (misnamed) Shenanigan bros hit town:Taciturn Tom,'Tame' will Hiccough,Billy the unquiet kid and Pacifist Steve."They jis came in one en' and wen'out d'other.Aint nutin happened anyhow'' said Loquacious Luke who was later gunned down by Wyatt Earpiece over a woman,Chesty O'Breasts.True story.Ok it's not.
The rumor "Deadwood" may return is awesome. There should be no conflict with Olyphant on "Justified". Neither of the shows film (or filmed) for 12 months straight. It shouldn't be impossible to work a schedule...if this pipe dream ever comes around. I have a sneaking suspicion that "Deadwood's" popularity has exponentially increased with its discovery on DVD, blu ray, and its run on Directv. HBO would be a fool to snub the opportunity...but they've been fools before. ;-)
Kinda looks like Justified. :p And there's Timothy olphant too. I wonder why he took the justified role, hesn't he worried to be typecasted from now on?
Borrowing the series from a friend, who borrowed it from his friend and I have to therefore watch the entire series quickly, in order to pull off the secret borrowing of this series. What a script! Looking forward to the second viewing being in HD, as I watched it in 480i. I love this intro song as well, music had a beautiful simplicity as period music did. Well done to all involved, very well done!
Its a great show tho i get annoyed by how they have some pretty interesting characters show up for an episode or two just to get killed off once you get interested in what they are all about.
We have enjoyed this series much more than we ever expected. We are taking a break over the holidays between Seasons 2 and 3 (Netflix and local library). It does get intense - and we want to savor it as long as possible. We have also enjoyed the extra features. Bravo to everyone involved in this marvelous work. It is of the highest quality and I think it will be beloved for a long time to come. What a wonderful legacy!
I've only watched the first 5 episodes and already I'm disappointed that it is not/will not be a complete series. Fantastic writing and acting, not to mention how intriguing the story is. I've read that the actor's contracts were not renewed because HBO was skeptical about the cost in the economic (with the setting, props, etc the average was about $4.5 million per episode), but it's still so disappointing that such a phenomenal work of art could not be fully realized. RIP Deadwood :(
Best television I have ever seen. A true masterpiece. Thankfully the Canadian history channel did not censor a single word. Bitterly disappointed at ending.
I agree; one of the best. We are watching it with NetFlix and getting the perk of not waiting months between seasons. I'd watch the whole three seasons in three days, but my wife can't take the immersion.
Television doesn't get any better than this. An intricate and compassionate stake on the claim of humanity. It's unbelievable that it is not on anymore, HBO just seems to love going against the wishes of their viewers. Or maybe like a large portion of the world today they are obsessed with crap.
HBO stated that Deadwood was "too expensive to maintain". Which certainly makes sense if you observe the production value from, say season 1 and season 2. I don't think the experience differed all that much, but you'll notice WAAAY more extras in the background, more animals, more scenery, etc. Just watch any episode from season 1 and any from 2 and you'll know what I'm talking about.
@gilsaly hbo CHOSE to cancel this in favour of John From Cincinnati, which they cancelled after one season. HBO has been a joke for the better part of the decade, and I fully expect them to not renew Game of Thrones after 2 or 3 seasons, cause that's exactly how they roll.

Deadwood isn't for those seeking action entertainment.
I think it's mostly about illustrating what the times were like then. That's why there's always a tense feeling of restrained violence—when it's used, its effect is to highlight a point or theme in the story.
Deadwood is about lawlessness and corruption, the interactions between so-called "civilized" people in a superficially civilized time and place, and the choices they make to live and stay alive.
was in deadwood when i was 12, visiting was unusual to me. never seen a Saloon...heard of it from my parents, but until i saw it and then many years later this series came out...i remembered! this town, Deadwood, is the impetimy of the true WEST! next to TOMBSTONE...

Pfffffffffffft Prison Break and 24 are garbage boring as hell cant stand to watch them at all. Deadwood kills both those shows in a fucking heartbeat.
Because even though it was making money, it didn't have a big enough return on investment for HBO to continue funding it. Unlike regular channels which have advertising up the wazoo, HBO has to invest money in shows and then wait and hope it pays out, just like movies, where regular channels can take advertising money to fund new shows. Deadwood cost 5 million an episode to film, so HBO decided to do two new shows instead of the final season of deadwood. Stupid HBO.
Neither is Prison Break, so what my mistake. Still liked both shows much more than Deadwood, which was interesting only in the beggining then got boring and relying too much on cursing. The thing is that 24 is still running (and will continue next year) and Prison Break is coming back in April while this show is dead.
G.W.Bush was elected, TWICE, as the president of the USA. Now that should tell you something: Just because something is popular, doesn't make it GOOD.
That aside; I prefer Prison Break and 24 over Deadwood.
Sure there is a lot of cursing in the show, but it's not as if it lacks substance. Deadwood is essentially a large character study, designed to exemplify the fact that none of it's characters are truly good or truly evil, and to get you to compare that to real life. Prison Break and 24 (both good shows) are action based and rely on relatively little in depth analysis from the user, a genre which is inherently more popular. Comparing them based solely on popularity seems a bit unfair.
this show was great.. HBO is fucking COCKSUCKER.. i hate hbo since they canceled carnivalé and also they canceled deadwood.. hbo is all cunts and stupids..
i agree hbo sucks now all the good shows are gone , deadwood, sopranos, carnivale, curb your enthusiasm all the good stuff is gone and hs been replaced by fagget shit
One more season was planned, 4 seasons for the four years between the time the show starts in real life and the time Deadwood burned down for good, but after the third season HBO decided that the return on investment was not big enough to justify funding a fourth season at 5 million an episode, so instead they funded two separate new shows for the same price it would cost to do just Deadwood, though I forget which ones...
How can they plow money in to series like Lost, but Deadwood, it's too good to even think about. TWO seasons and then... It's dead. Deadwood. Drunken like shiet here...
They could too afford it. They decided the return on investment wasn't high enough, not that it was non existent. Stupid HBO. To be fair though, it costs 5 million an episode to make Deadwood, and by spending the same amount of money on two new shows, they were able to double their profits.
The Wire wasn't canceled. The author of the show decided he didn't know enough about another facet of the Baltimore underworld (Season 1 is dealers, 2 is dockworkers, 3 is the city government, 4 is the schools, and 5 is the media) to make another season, and he didn't want to redo anything he had already done. Carnivale, Deadwood, Rome, and The Sopranos, were canceled. (Though The sopranos were told after season 5 to write a final season.)
Incorrect. Into their final seasons of filming they were told that was it, and that they should make this the last season. The teams behind both expressed a wish to continue, but HBO said they would only give them one more season. The Wire on the other hand, was offered a contract for several more seasons, and it's author (who was also head of the project) turned them down.
Again, a shining example of HBO's ability to make shows which are the best on television, and then an inch before the finish line, turn them into the best shows, off television.
heeheehee yeah, kind of frustrating at times. makes me wonder how long true blood will last. I love true blood but, just kind of wonder if it will be allowed to end.
This is not the frist time a show, agreat show at that, has been canceled with no closure to the series. Thank you HBO. Not only will I not be able to continue watching one of my favorite shows, but I will not watch any of your new ones either for fear of the same thing happening again. Great marketing strategy there boys.
It's all about the amount of viewers... I agree that Deadwood was a great show but a channel can't keep on losing money. I hope that those two Deadwood-films are being made some day.
Why did they cancel the show? It was excellent. The swearing was a bit extreme, but not too much for the time and conditions that we see in this town. Btw, does George Hearst, William Randolph's father, remind you of anybody living today or since?
They cancelled it because it cost too much money. You see, the same time Deadwood Season 4 was being put into motion, HBO had already committed to Season 2 of Rome, which cost billions to make. They created huge sets for the show, and used hundreds of extras in full armor. Apparently that's how Deadwood got cancelled. HBO said Milch could do 6 episodes or two 2-hour movies to end the series, but they released all actors from contracts making it impossible to do either.
My analysis on what the opening credits mean. The wild stallion is a symbolic spirit, not an actual being, otherwise they would be trying to capture it. It races through the town as it functions. No matter how humankind evolves as a civilization, a natural wild spirit will always survive and persist. This can be vibrantly observed in the history of late 19th Century Deadwood, SD, and can be see after and before in other societies.
the series was amazing. violence, lust, friendship, good vs evil, poetry...raw mankind...and full of surprises. and the music with the opening credits is wonderful stuff, as well as the visuals. don't know what's with hbo...they get great shows like this and carnevale and then cancel them. if you're not willing to shell out the money to produce these things, hbo, then don't effing start!
And Anna Gunn's name is there as well so you know it's from the 2nd season. And I have to agree with Spiker in that every HBO show always has terrific intros.
John from cincinnati was bad (IMO). I was never a fan of Sex and the City. I can only think of 2. I can think of a whole lot more for every other network.
When I got the whole first two series on DVD in Beijing for 50p, I watched about 8 episodes back to back in one day. This is an awesome show, and this theme tune is pretty brilliant. And catchy.
It boggles my mind that shows like "True Blood" are being picked up for a fifth season, but this brilliant show only lasted three seasons.

Rome/The Sopranos weren't cancelled. Into their final seasons of filming they knew that was it.
Trolloc1986 2 years ago
Incorrect. Into their final seasons of filming they were told that was it, and that they should make this the last season. The teams behind both expressed a wish to continue, but HBO said they would only give them one more season. The Wire on the other hand, was offered a contract for several more seasons, and it's author (who was also head of the project) turned them down.

I miss carnivale. (sighs)

Six Feet Under's last episode doesn't suck =) It's PERFECT.

In the opening credits, the side shot of the breast is my favorite. It defies gravity man!!!

what a show.such a pity its gone, carnivale also, why bother if ur not gonna finish...

Why did they cancel the show? It was excellent. The swearing was a bit extreme, but not too much for the time and conditions that we see in this town. Btw, does George Hearst, William Randolph's father, remind you of anybody living today or since?
Flowbee79 4 years ago

I agree as well. I love Deadwood, Oz, Big Love, Curb, and a lot of other shows on HBO. HBO is the king of original series'!

And catchy.
