I would like to personally thank whoever made this movie. Because of your soundtrack, and my quick mindedness to steal said soundtrack, I passed an assignment I needed for my diploma. :) Thankyou Kindly.
GREECE AS A COUNTRY GOT IT'S NAME IN 1820 !! SO HOW CAN IT BE ANCIENT GREECE OR GREEKS WHEN THEY NEVER HAD A NAME ??
ON THE OTHER HAND THE ANCIENT PEOPLE AND ANCIENT COUNTRY WICH IS MENTIONED IN THE BIBBLE IS " MACEDONIA" ..
THE WORD GREEK IS A MODERN TERM USED TO DESCRIBE THE UNITED SPEAKING ATHENIAN GREEKS MODERN LANGUAGE AS OF 1920, AS GYPSYS OR KARUELLATHA> COW COUNTRY :)) POLE= FLAT PLAIN IN MACEDONIAN WHAT IS IS IN GREEK ?
Are you on something? Do you realise what kind of crap you just posted? The name of the country is Hellas (Greek Ελλάς), officially the Hellenic Republic. The Hellenes bear the same name from the time of Homer. Macedonia is mentioned in the scriptures in the context that is a part of Hellas.A Slavo-whatever Greek-wannabe, is the last one who is going to dispute the historical continuity of this nation since he still struggles to define who he is by stealing thehistory of his neighbor.
LISTEN HERE YOU PALIGOLO !! HOW MANY NAMES HAVE YOU GYPSY GREEKS GOT MATE ??
ELLATHA , HELLAS, ELLINIKA , KARUELLATHA ,GREECE ???? GREECE PRIOT TO 1820 NEVER HAD A NAME !! NO ONE IN THE WORLD REFERS TO GREECE AS HELLAS OR WHAT EVER UNTILL 1820 !!
PRIOR TO THAT YOU IDIOTS WERE COLLINISED BY THE ROMANS !! AND THEN THE 1ST KING OF THIS NEWLY FORMED COUNTRY WAS CALLED KING OTTO OF GREECE WHOM IS GERMAN !! THESE SO CALLED MODERN GREEKS NEVER HAD KINGS IT WAS ONLY THE ANCIENT MACEDONIAN KINGS
Inconsistent nonsense, don't know really where to start to answer these utter crap. A Slavogypsy republic that was called until world war II as Vardar and now suddenly wants to become part of the Hellenic heritage of Macedonia is what you should worry about and not the Hellenes. We have been around since the dawn of time and whether you like it or not are always gonna be there to remind you that you are the rejects of the Balkans until you show courage and accept who you really are.
1. Greeks was the name for that territory long before 1820.
2. Romans named all Greeks after a single tribe of HELLENES that lived in the region of Epirus( south of todays Albania)
3. Ancient Greece never has existed, but it is the best possible translation for the original Ἑλλαδα,-ας which includes whole territory of the south Balkan peninsula the HELLENES populated. Ionia was a separate region of Asia minor shore city-states (πολυς) so shut the fuck up dude!
@JANDAR69 Hey idiot, do you know what language the New Testament was originally written in? It was written in Greek. When the Apostle Paul went to Macedonia to preach, he spoke GREEK and all of his epistles, including the ones to people in Macedonia, were written in Greek. You are an idiot.
By Late Antiquity, the Greeks referred to themselves as Rhomaioi (Greek: Ῥωμαῖοι) or Romioi (Greek: Ρωμιοί), i.e. "Romans", since after AD 212 virtually all Greeks were Roman citizens. After the establishment of Christianity by Theodosius I, "Hellene" was applied to the followers of the polytheistic ("pagan") religion. A unique form is used in Georgian, where the Greeks are called berdzeni (Georgian: ბერძენი), probably deriving from the Georgian word for "wise".[2][3][4][5]
@JANDAR69 "Αλέξανδρος Φιλίππου και Έλληνες πλην Λακεδαιμονίων" try to translate in your slavic language what Alexander the Great said in his own(Greek of course). We gave you religion, alphabet and civilization but you cannot take our History! MACEDONIA IS GREEK!
@JANDAR69 go and learn some history man -or go to hell!!!!i bet people from your country were still on the trees eating bananas ,when ancient greeks invented democracy,in th Golden Age of Pericles-500 years B.C!!!
29 MAY 2011. The last stand and sacrifice of the defenders of Constantinople could not be a better example of self determination, patriotism and selflessness for the extreme challenges that we face these days. As our far ancestors at the fields of Thermopylae, on the walls of the Polis and the mountains of Pindus, History calls as once again to defend our motherland against an insidious enemy which silently enslaves us. Paleologos battle cry echoes the centuries! ΙΤΕ ΠΑΙΔΕΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ!
part of Serbia,Bosnia and if i am not mistaken Croatia was in Byzantian Empire, and part of Bosnia and Serbia will be again...i am a Serb (actualy Yugoslavian) and i would be proud that Byzantia forms once again...to be ruled by East Romans and Greeks...salute to my Greek friends :))) and to all other former Byzantian lands <3
the fall of Constantinople it's not only about bravery and self sacrifice... but also about betrayal. the people of Consatntinople were left to die alone... that's clear... what is not clear is why the Kerkoporta Gate was open during the final ottoman assault??? it's also a mystery why some of the byzantine noble families were allowed by the ottomans to keep their possesions and to continue their trade. was is a reward granted by the sultan for their betrayal? well, those are questions...
@bogdancomm Salutari prietenul meu. If you take into account the historical background you might interpret it. For centuries the undermining policy of Rome against the Empire, the great schism of 1054 and on top of all the atrocities of the crusaders in 1204 resulted into Byzantines holding the West into detestation. Mutual political and religious anathemas fueled hate and resentment . On the other hand, the Turkish Islam offered religious autonomy and that was extremely appealing to zealots.
@bogdancomm On the other hand a fraction of the Byzantine administration, mostly the Phanariots who were more educated & in favor of flexible diplomacy endorsed reaching out the West for help even if that meant dogmatic concessions, all for the sake of the State. That resulted in John VIII signing the Ferrara-Florence Union that practically never took place coz of the fierce reaction of the Church, the people and even some nobles. Constantine Paleologos stick to that policy but help never came
@Palaiologos Most notably, Loukas Notaras was unofficially the head of the reactionary wing of the administration. He has been ( not proved) the infamous public statement '' Better the Sultan's turban than the Pope's mitre! '' . Even if he said it or not it still reflects the feelings of the Anti- Unionists. The Turks used good old Byzantine politics: divide and conquer., but, nevertheless, the vast majority of Greeks and western mercenaries fought 'till the bitter end against the invader.
@Palaiologos Well, at least Mehmed showed a little dignity; he kept his promisses. Even after those 3 days the turkish troops were allowed to plunder, he granted the survivors freedom and civil rights, the european crussaders were far worst! they simply pillaged like barbarians and Constantinople never recovered. ironicaly they were christians. But dealing with the turks was a big mistake. We lost the pearl of christianity: CONTANTINOPLE! Maybe Mehmed kept his word, but his successors didn't.
@Palaiologos You are telling a one sided story don't you think?? How about all of the atrocities that the Byzantines commited against the west and especially the crusaders. The Emperor Alexius promised to lead the crusaders and he did not. The Emperor Alexius promised to send Byzantine troops to help the crusaders and he did not. Alexius even encourage violence against Catholics living in Constantinople. Both sides are guilty, not just the west. I am Greek and Orthodox by the way.
Name the atrocities the Byzantines commited against the West. Emperor Alexius is responsible for providing the excuse to the crusaders to sack the City but that is not an excuse for the crimes commited in 1204. You are disputing a crime that the West have admitted even the next day it was comitted and recently again through the preceding Pope. The Byzantines are guilty of political and policy errors, the crusaders are guilty of destroying the one of the 2 lungs of Christianity
@Palaiologos I already named them. Alexius Broke his promise to lead the Army. Alexius made a secret pact with Saladin which means that he sided with the Muslims against fellow Christians. Alexius did not send troops to back up the crusaders when they were short on supplies and soldiers. Alexius encouraged and tolerated violence against Latin Christians living in Constantinople. Alexius completely abandoned the Crusaders in the holy land. (CONTINUED)
@Palaiologos Alexius made a secret deal with Kilij Arslan when the Crusaders were fighting the Turks in Anatolia. In 1182 Alexius incited mobs to massacre Latin Christians including women and Children. Lastly, it was Alexios IV who promised to pay the crusaders so they could get to Egypt if they would just help him regain the throne of the Empire. Once Alexios was made Emperor, he refused to pay the crusaders and launched fireships against their remaining ships. (CONTINUED)
@Palaiologos This left the Crusaders with out transportation, food or money and stranded on a hostile shore. This is why they attacked Constantinople. I am Greek and Orthodox, but I recognize the mistakes that the Emperors made and I dont try to blame everything on the Crusaders.
But what they are doing this PIGGSS of the West? They awayt the fall of vthe EAST!!! and this piggs had a lott of time they waste this time in the BLASFEMIK CITY OF BENET)IA!!!!some idiots write this fucking name like Wenetia , only idiots! beleave or not, what mathers is that you all will take place in concert of DEVILLS most wanted HAPPENING!!!I PISS OFF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Day of remembrance today, 29th of May, eternal glory to our last heroic Emperor Constantine and the last stand fighters of the Greek Empire of Byzantium.
there is so little mentioned in history class about constantinople yet it was so important in world history.
most history books claim that islamic civilization was more advanced than western europe. what they fail to mention is that the byzantine civilization was always more advanced than the islamic civilization as well as the fact that the mass exodus from constantinople in 1453 greatly accellerated the renaissance in western europe.
islam contributed all but nothing to world knowledge.
im turk girl from Istanbul i dont care how u call it constantino or constantinepolis it doesnt disturb me cuz i love greeks i love peace beetwen greece and turkey
Είμαι τουρκικά κορίτσι και μου αρέσει πάντα για την Ελλάδα =))
I dont understand why some Turks get annoyed when someone calls the City as Constantinoupolis: that was the official name from the foundation 'till the 20th century. Like an ostrich hiding its head in the ground, these people think that they can erase 1100 years of history before the Ottoman conquest with such tricks. I dont have a problem if a Turks refers to Thessaloniki as Selanik simply coz that dont make me feel insecure about the history or sovereignity of the city. Thanks for the comment
as I said , I dont mind if you call Thessaloniki Selanik, or Alexandroupolis Dedeagac, or Andrianoupolis Edirne. I and if I may say, all Greeks dont really care. For the same reason I reserve the right of calling the city with its original Greek name, the name by which actually this city was famous around the world. Some people have to understand that saying ''Constantinople'' is only offensive in the minds of demented ultra nationalists. take care
Beautiful ! But do not judge what happened. God, in his infinite wisdom, punished the pride and greed of the fallen Christian knights of the 'Fourth Crusade', and if you read about this 'crusade' and you will find the root of what happened on May 1452. Christian unitiy must be restored, and we will prevail. 29 May 1452, Never forget! Never let another fall of Constantinople happen again.
@LeMousqueteerBleu its 1453....the city wont fall if the Western Christians (especially the rival Roman Empire, calling itself "Holy Roman Empire") sent a major crusade that will defend the Byzantine Romans....
I live in the Orthodox nation of Romania and I'm proud to call myself an Orthodox Christian, but I also feel terribly sorry for what has happened to this holy Byzantine capital... How is it possible that the greatest Orthodox cathedral in the world has minarets surrounding it? How can such blasphemy be tolerated...? Asia Minor is BYZANTINE land and has for centuries been Christian... I truly hope that one day, these lands will be reclaimed by the Greeks in the name of history and of our Lord!
@koopakid10,Greeks didnt invade Turkey in WWI. They stationed their forces&undertook the administation of the Smyrna region according to the articles of the Moudros truce &Sevres Treaty,as imposed to the defeated Ottoman Empire.Only when Kemal's rebellion took place, the only organised army in the region, the Greek, undertook the task of imposing by force the decisions of the Entente. The Greeks stationed naval force to Constantinople with the other Powers as part of the occupation of the city
@koopakid10 You should know that Venizelos wanted to March on Constantinople with the Greek army instead of Anatolia but Britain and France would not let him.
greeks be proud of your history what more do u want u got the ancient spartans, troy, alexander and roman succesion u cant have it all u dont need it ur history is one of the greatest the world has seen
You know what i dont understand... How the Greek people even today are still blaming the Ottomans. If the Greek historians think back a little before 1453 and go to the year of 1204... Known as "H Tetarti Stavroforia" H Kwnstantinoupoli gonatise stous Latinous oxi stous Othamanous... The Latins crippled the beast, all the Ottomans did was finish it off.... Think about it?
lol you guys will never get istanbul back because its Turks now And all you Greek people are Gay and haters the fight was long time a go why you have to fight about it!!!
If you aint got something constructive to say or something that at least makes any sense, why dont you shut your trap and go to the next video on youtube without having to humiliate yourself?
Though historicaly the ottoman conquest of Constantinople is a turnpoint in world history, it was far from being a military miracle. The empire was just the City, some cities at the Black Sea and Peloponessos in mainland Greece, just a shadow of a glorious past. It can only be said that it was a military achievement of the 7,000 defenders behind almost 20km of walls that managed to hold back 200,000 - 250,000 ottoman troops from April,5 till May,29.
The wide scale use of cannons against a fortification such as that of Constantinople is probably the only significant military innovation the Ottomans implemented during the siege. The great walls of the Polis, 1,000 years old in 1453, were still those days the most sophisticated, complex and impressive fortification ever existed.
greek brothers no need to fight or kill anyone we just wanna let know u guys that we are taking good care of your history we are brothers....the world should know that every child that is born as a turk or greek should be more proud of their history cuz there is no other country that has better history than us...greeks and turks are brothers no matter what...
Those damned Catholics, were it not for their actions in 1204, the Empire might have been able to resist the Turks, but no, they perverted Biblical ideas for their 'holy wars' just like Islam did with their Jihad, and ravaged Constantinople, and with it, shattered the Eastern Roman Empire.
Byzantium slowly withered away b/c of her ridgidity & obsessive inward looking. She received the benefits of the cultural patrimony that had preceeded her, but she utterly failed to build upon it.
The absolutism of the imperial tyranny stifled Greek creativity. The West recreated the democratic ethic & was thus able to build on what little they learned from the Greeks.
Sounds so Edward Gibbon!obsessive inward:byzantine political theory was trully global, their diplomacy is teached even our days in Political Sciences. Failed to build upon its heritage:arts thrived in a way that West could follow up only centuries later.Rigidity:dynamic evolution was the key of 1000 years of rule.Absolutism tyranny for a medieval empire while Russia had an absolut monarch till the late 19th century, Byzantium was the ark that preserved and enriched Greco-Roman tradition.
Well, it wasn't for nothing that the word autocrator was invented for the Byzantine emperors. It is precisely this political reality that stifled the creativity of her subject people. They had to control everything & stranged life out of their society.
In what ways did the Byzantines build on the technological, economic, scientific & philosophical developements of the ancients? I'll grant the philosophical matter. I've been reading Jaroslav Pelikan re: the Capadocian saints.
Autocrator was not invented for Byzantine emperors, it's a title used in classical Greece also (i.e Alexander the Great was proclaimed Commander Autocrator of the Hellenes - Στρατηγός Αυτοκράτωρ). Economic the Byzantine empire instituted the solidus which was considered the most valuable and trusted currency for centuries both in East and West. Technological u have masterpieces of architecture, civil buildings&infrastructure.
Philosophy I can mention Georgios Plithon Gemistos who is considered maybe the greatest mind of its time. I understand that you wanna compare classical antiquity with medieval times but i think you should always take under consideration what was situation in other states that time in Europe. The Byzantines never exprerienced the so called Black Ages as the West did. Sometimes we get carried away from our passion for classical antiquity and tend to ignore all the achievements of the Byzantines.
And as far as i know and pls someone correct me if i'm wrong, the roman title imperator was replaced by the greek Basileas (Βασιλευς) the days of Heraclius&guess that autocrator was a translation of the roman imperator.Absolut monarchy or better despotism if we refer to later roman/early byzantine days, was a neccesity of its time as we didnt have city states or small kingdoms to rule but vast multiethnic empires. Even nowdays there're societies that are not ready to adapt democracy.
To be far, The Pope excommunicated them,Also Many who joined the fourth crusade deserted when they found out that Constantinople was gonna be targeted after Zara.
Alexis IV treachery is not to be forgotten either, If not for him and his vile scheme to steal the throne, None of those brain dead mercenaries would have had the idea planted in their head.
Agree on that buddy! Goes the same way now days.We keep on accussing foreign powers for their stand towards Greek foreign affairs while the same time we dont seem to realise that the first one to blame is ourselves for allowing being governed by (and this is the most lenient way i can put this) mediocre politicians. Think that the people gets the goverment it deserves&we certainly dont deserve better than the one we have. Before asking respect from others we should first respect ourselves
the frankish crusaders under the lead of the venetians were told they were going to an egyptian fortress, at that time many people were not sure of geography in the known world.. its very sad, without the sack of constantinople the byzantines could have easily driven out the turks in anatolia and they, the real romans and the real christian faith carrying, would have survived till nowadays.
Fuck jacobleb 420 for his stupid thought , he will be always an ass hole for me !! by the way we Turks didin't hide I S T A N B U L it's always there , just come & take it if you have solid balls otherwise will come to take komotini till thessaloniki !! hahaha come on relax it's only a bad joke , you 're always welcome to our Sublime city just pop in for an ouzo or Raki & the rest of mezes together with a nice plate of Gyro as you call it instead of Doner and Djajiki & Pilav / Mousakka
Well, i dont know brother, the main thing though is keeping the memory alive in our hearts. And if we can embrace the values that nurished great men as Emperor Constantine then is like having 10 Constantinoples and that is much more important of having a city. what's the point of having Constantinople and having a decadent society living in it? Bottom line is not getting back the city, but being the people that made that city and empire the cradle of great culture. thanks for commenting bro!
Byzantium, you will be forever in our hearts, you gave the undefeatable faith in Christ, preserved and saved in the Holly Orthodoxy. Long live Constantine XI and the heroes, who died for Constantinople. Their sacrifice is the lesson, which the history of Western Europe must take in order to understand who is the true heir of Rome. Because the romans never felees from battle.
It seems to me that every culture, including, of course, Turkish culture, is capable of a renaissance moment, but why did hundreds of years of the Ottoman empire produce less of value for the world than any other comparable empire in history?
Paleologos needed military help against the ottomans at his gates He signed a treaty with Rome. Unification of the church under Pope. in return Pope would have provided help against the Ottomans. It did not happen The Patriarch beat him to the punch. He made his own deal with the ottomans. He opened the gates to the city for them and he received 'ta pronomia" from the ottomans
hi everybody, i am of aramaic (syriac orthodox) roots, i just don't get why the west left constantinople to fall, i believe this historical incident encouuraged turkey or the ottoman empire (the same), to commit its genocides against the aramaic and arminian genocides through the follwing centuries to come, if the west could just stop them at the time these genocides plus the serbian bousnian fights would never existed.
I find good to make a tribute to the thousand years old Constantinople, but don't fall into the topics, please. The West was not "sinking deep" in any Dark Age. The rise of the Frankish kingdom was a time of enlightment and scientific advance, especially whith Charlemagne. Contact with the Caliphate in early VIIIth Century provided many agriculture and technological devolopment, as happened in the XIth Century. From then on, Western Europe grew unstopped until 1348 and the Black Death.
Hi mate. The kingdom of Charlemagne was the first significant political entity after the fall of western roman Empire in 476 AD. Nevertheless, it never matched the Byzantine Empire in military might, culture or economy. Carolingian Renaissance though constituting a glow in the general decadence in the West never managed to elevate itself to the Byzantines who experienced an unprecedented rise of power from its foundation in the 4th century till the Comnemus Dynasty in the 12th century.
Your understanding of history is quite poor. It's the word "Byzantine" that was invented by later historians. Many of the Byzantines were Greeks but it was a multi-ethnic empire and they called themselves Romans. You claim that all the emperors were Greeks... Justinian was not a Greek, for example. Constantine's army did not "gain independence"- where did you get such nonsense? He simply moved the capital eastward, but he, tellingly, called it the New Rome.
no its true, the byzantines called themselves "The Empire of Romans" or "Romanians". In reallity the byzantines were a multi-culteral nation in the early days, but later became mostly greek. Latin died out after the fall of rome. But it was a multi nation so-to speak.
at the first centuries the emperors werent greeks but after they were. in the late centuries of byzantium the emperor was also called "king of the greeks". i have seen it in byzantine coins
you dumb fuck;you ignorant;you uncivilised;it will be ours again! So it was written,so it shall be done!Hope you see it and cry in vain!It will always be Konstantinoupolis
The city was named Constantinople until the beginning of XXth Century, when the Turkish government, possibly Atatürk, changed its name to Instanbul, a name already used and more Turkish-like than Constantinople (even when Istanbul stands for Greek "Eis tin Polis", meaning "To the City").
Just so you know Constantine ruled over the ENTIRE Roman Empire, he was not Byzantine, or Eastern Roman, he was a Roman Emperor.....Listen, the Byzantines were "Romans", BUT, Roman did not mean what it did during the time of Augustus, it was something different, Roman just mean politically Roman, ethnically Greek.
The Byzantine Empire was DEFINITELY the Eastern Roman Empire, that said it also was undeniably Greek in culture, language and race. That part of the Roman Empire was always Greek speaking, Greek was the universal language during Roman times having been spread to a great portion of the world by Alexander the Great's army and influence. All THAT said, God bless Greece and may she reign over the Queen of cities once more and soon.
the reason why we call it teh byzantine empire is taht historians look at the middle ages there is in fact two roman empires. There is the holy roman empire based in germany and central italy and then there is the eastern roman empire based mostly in greece rest of the balkans and asia minor. People will be confused between holy roman empire and eastern roman empire, so historians decided to call the eastern roman empire teh byzantine empire eventhough greeks never called themsleves byzantines
most byzantine citizans concidered themselves rohmia the greek word for roman until the first collpase of constantinople in 1204. s After 1204 Byzantines started to call themselves greeks instead of romans because italians and french who are descendants of the romans conquered thier holy city constantinople. They also used the roman currency called the solidus or solidi. During late antiquity the Eastern Roman empire became more greek. Basilius was used instead of agustus or caeser.
why the fuck would the vatican want people to believe that? The pope has always hated the eastern romans.. haha you damn greeks, first the vatican and propaganda then the turks, the greeks and their never ending lies. stop fooling yourself cause your people have been occupied by foreghn forces for thousands of years.
While the US hegemony, with a very generous estimation, dates back to the 50's, Greek dominating presence as a superpower on both military&cultural terms lasted for centuries. In its historical route through the eons faced glory and decline but it's the historical continuity&unsurpassed influential presence that constitutes Greek history as global history itself.&Pope doesn't hate or love anyone:like most of God's "servants" on Earth like to join those providing the most prestigious privileges.
hello old friend .i sent you a post some time last year about agia sophia telling of many secrets hidden in foundaions of sacred church about 2008 'turning point' its happening .agia sophis is an astrolgical time capsule IF ONLY 'ALL' GREEKS COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT POSSESION HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM US.not long now. YOUR VIDEO IS INSPERATIONAL...
it is clear that whoever gets educated and reads history admits those facts, i have been to Constantinople and they do tourists a big turkish propaganda, presenting everything as if it is their own. example: they have changed names to everything that was greek originated like the lyra instrument, istanbul for constantinople, izmir for smyrni, edirne for adrianople and many more, also have build so many agia sofia replicas you cant identify whats the original one
Also Arabs were calling them Romans, Turks were calling them Romans. When Seljuk Turks established a kingdom in Minor Asia in the 11th century they called it the SULTANATE OF RUM, meaning the kingdom of ROme. The Westerners, Franks Italians, Germans were calling them Greeks. The Greeks still are calling themselves ROMIOI even today. In final analysis you cannot understand Byzantine culture if you seperate Roman or Greek tradition from it.
The name Byzantine did not come into existence untill the 18th century from English Historians. At the time of its existence, the Byzantines were calling themselves Romans and were fully aware of their Roman tradition. At the same time they were also aware of their Greek tradition and culture. It was a fusion of GrecoRoman civilization with the Greek element becoming more dominant in the later years.
Roman was more like a political term underlining the position held by the Byzantine state among other Christian states as lawful heirs of the Roman Empire. The Byzantines never named themselves Latins .. on the contrary they even despised this term especially after the sack of Constantinople in 1204. The so called Latin Empire of Constantinople existed only between 1204 and 1261 until Michael Paleologos recaptured the City from the Latins. The Empire was Greek from every other aspect.
And once again ( know i said this quite a few times) we should not confuse the way we define modern ethnic states with medieval times. Thanks for commenting.
Why do you give away the name Roman to the heretics and to the Germans who conquered and enslaved the Romans? The Roman Empire never changed its name into Byzantium. Roman came to mean Orthodox. Greeks were Romans. The leadership of the Roman Empire passed to the Greeks. The western historians named the Empire Byzantium in order to support the lie that the Roman Empire was the Frankish Empire of Charlemagne. The Greeks are Romans but not all the Romans are Greeks.
no, only when heraclius came, Justinion still had latin as the langua franc and the offciail langueage was that of rome, but teh empre and its army where greek (orthodox)
The empire was hellenised very early and before the arrival of Christ. Rome was speaking Greek, that's why Saint Paul wrote to Romans in Greek. Romans adopted the Greek culture form the beginning. It was a Greco-Roman Empire from day one.
Hi palaiologos! Me and my family we live in spain, but it hasn't been like that always. Unfortunately I have a very little idea of Paleologos' history, although I come from there. One of my relatives( my grand grand father) left his country (Greece) for ever in order to be part of my family. He was a Paleologos, and so, me too I suppose. I'm very thankful to you for making this video and I'm just wondering: Do you have as a surname Paleologos???
And I would like to mention Georg Ostrogorsky's words, sayin : "Even though Byzantium, for practical and theoretical reasons, insisted on the preservation of roman legacy, later on it was displaced by its original roman views" and "The evolution of the byzantine state was vividly dynamic with constant reformation so that when it reaches its end, the byzantine state has nothing in common with the roman imperium except the name and traditional claims which were not fullfiled"
Just to clarify somethin'... i disagree with Kyroz2... it's just that we discussed this twice here and I don't wanna repeat all over again my arguments.Mostly coz this period I can't be online frequently and i don't have the time to keep up with a new discussion on this matter.Just one thing. The Empire was multinational.. but was Greek in culture, tongue, art, tradition etc.Not the same defining ethnicity like we do for States that emerged the 18th century.i.e.the Ottoman Empire wasn't Turkish?
byzantine empire wasnt never empire of greek. citizens of east roman empire caled themselves romamoi( roman citzen) east roman empire was multinational, not only greek.
Mr kyroz2 I suggest you to read the facts more carefully. the true roman empire was destroyed by the ostrogoths in the 6th century AD. neither the Byzantine empire nor the Holy Roman are true successors of Rome. the official name of the byzantine empire was Vasilia Romeon, written "Βασιλεία Ρωμαίων", (i.e Imperium Romanorum).despite that fact all western europeans until 19th century and the formation of the Hellenic Republic used the terms "Imperium Graecorum", "Graecia", "Terra Graecorum"...
my greek friend, I suppose that you are greek! I like greek and greek culture great respect to you, you did great for Europe, but the fact is that Byzantine empire never existed, there was roman empire, ROMAN STATE, do you understand,
and you greeks had a great influence to this state yes, but you were only the citizens, there was not the greeks state, the citizenship didnt call greek citizenship but Roman citizinship, and other see my video Byzantine empire, the describtion, there is explanations about this topic!
3. The Western countries refered to the Eastern Roman Empire as "Empire of the Greeks". Yes, it was multicultural, but which empire wasn't? Especially in that times and with the vastness of the Byzantine Empire! And I said before, the Persian, the Ottoman, the British Empires were multicultural. Shouldn't we call them Persian or Turkish or British? The prevailing ideology in all aspects of life was Greek.
1. During the time that the Empire existed it was not called Byzantine but Empire of Romans. The term was introduced much later by scholars of Byzantine studies.
2.The term Roman was used by the Byzantines to underline the fact that they were the only legitimate heir of the Roman Empire and therefore destined to rule over the Christian World by grace of God. It was a matter of "prestige" and tradition in which both Byzantines paid much attention
My friend Kyroz2, i am not accusing of any bad will or something but in my opinion you are making the same mistake like many others about this matter: you are confusing the way that we define modern states with medieval times. The ethnic definition of solid ethnic states and on ethnic basis in general was introduced much later (17-18th century). But even today prevailing ideology is the main parameter ie. the US .
thanks friend, I really respect you, your video is full of emotions, i like it, great tribute to the great emperor! During the ancient Roman empire birth something beautiful, the culture of the ancient greeks was accepted and infuence all Romans, There will be none Seneca, Cicero, Vergilius, there all was insipirated by ancient greeks!
yes the greeks influence with their culture, literaterute, philosphy all world, at this time birth so call Greeco-roman civilization ancient civilization what we know here in the west from the rennesance time!
The greeks polis was died but the greek culture and greek nation lived! but no in Greek state but in the Roman state as the citiziens of the Roman empire then of Eastern Roman Empire, yes it was the multicultural empire, also Hungary was the multiculural empire, Ottoman empire was multiculural, but the state itself was ROMAN, none GREEK, they spoke greeks, yes but the state was roman not only by tradition it was unbroken continuance,
The byzantine emperors called themse Basileos thon Rhomaioi, Latin emperor of the Romans, The law was the roman no greeks, magisterial system was roman, the state simply was Roman, and they preserved so called Greco-Roman civilization no only Greeks civilization, thanks of Byzantine ( eastern ROman) emperor Iustinianus no greek empreror, now all Europe use the Roman civic law in their law and administrative system, even you greeks,
Even from the days of Emperor Constantine and the foundation of the new Capital in ancient Byzantium, the East was fully Hellenized. After the crisis of 3rd century, the Roman administative system collapsed. The transition from the Roman Hegemony(Principatus) to the total dominance of Imperial power (dominatus) introduced by Diocletian was followed by a new administrative system based on 2 branches :Central and Praefectures administation.
This system was nothing like the one during Roman times. And moreover, from the Heraclius Dynasty it was replaced gradually by the Themata, a system that proved to be the backbone of Byzantine power. So, there is not true that the administative system was Roman. As for the language of law, I agree that the first centuries was Roman. But later it was replaced by Greek and gradually Roman was totally displaced in Byzantine law and administative system.
Even from the reign of Justinian, even though most of the Corpus was in Roman(Codex, Digesta(Pandektis in Greek), Institutiones) the last part that included the new laws, the Novellae (Neares in Greek) was in Greek because the Latin language was not understood in the East. I can also mention the Eclogue and the Basilika. The Basilika, issued by Leo VI the Wise(late 9th century)was a revisal of the Corpus and was written in Greek along with new laws introduced by Leo and Basil I also in Greek.

NO SUCH THINKG AS ANCIENT GREEKS OR GREECE YOU
EGG HEADS !!!

Shut the fuck up.

29 MAY 2011. The last stand and sacrifice of the defenders of Constantinople could not be a better example of self determination, patriotism and selflessness for the extreme challenges that we face these days. As our far ancestors at the fields of Thermopylae, on the walls of the Polis and the mountains of Pindus, History calls as once again to defend our motherland against an insidious enemy which silently enslaves us. the fall of Constantinople it's not only about bravery and self sacrifice... but also about betrayal. the people of Consatntinople were left to die alone... that's clear... what is not clear is why the Kerkoporta Gate was open during the final ottoman assault??? it's also a mystery why some of the byzantine noble families were allowed by the ottomans to keep their possesions and to continue their trade. was is a reward granted by the sultan for their betrayal? well, those are questions...
bogdancomm 1 year ago
@bogdancomm Salutari prietenul meu. If you take into account the historical background you might interpret it. For centuries the undermining policy of Rome against the Empire, the great schism of 1054 and on top of all the atrocities of the crusaders in 1204 resulted into Byzantines holding the West into detestation. Mutual political and religious anathemas fueled hate and resentment . On the other hand, the Turkish Islam offered religious autonomy and that was extremely appealing to zealots.
Palaiologos 1 year ago
@bogdancomm On the other hand a fraction of the Byzantine administration, mostly the Phanariots who were more educated & in favor of flexible diplomacy endorsed reaching out the West for help even if that meant dogmatic concessions, all for the sake of the State. That resulted in John VIII signing the Ferrara-Florence Union that practically never took place coz of the fierce reaction of the Church, the people and even some nobles. Constantine Paleologos stick to that policy but help never came
Palaiologos 1 year ago
@Palaiologos Most notably, Loukas Notaras was unofficially the head of the reactionary wing of the administration. He has been ( not proved) the infamous public statement '' Better the Sultan's turban than the Pope's mitre! '' . Even if he said it or not it still reflects the feelings of the Anti- Unionists. The Turks used good old Byzantine politics: divide and conquer., but, nevertheless, the vast majority of Greeks and western mercenaries fought 'till the bitter end against the invader.
Palaiologos 1 year ago
@Palaiologos Well, at least Mehmed showed a little dignity; he kept his promisses. Even after those 3 days the turkish troops were allowed to plunder, he granted the survivors freedom and civil rights, the european crussaders were far worst! they simply pillaged like barbarians and Constantinople never recovered. ironicaly they were christians. But dealing with the turks was a big mistake. We lost the pearl of christianity: CONTANTINOPLE! Maybe Mehmed kept his word, but his successors didn't.
bogdancomm 1 year ago
@Palaiologos You are telling a one sided story don't you think?? How about all of the atrocities that the Byzantines commited against the west and especially the crusaders. The Emperor Alexius promised to lead the crusaders and he did not. The Emperor Alexius promised to send Byzantine troops to help the crusaders and he did not. Alexius even encourage violence against Catholics living in Constantinople. Both sides are guilty, not just the west. I am Greek and Orthodox by the way.
AegeanKing 1 year ago
@AegeanKing
Palaiologos 1 year ago
@Palaiologos I already named them. Alexius Broke his promise to lead the Army. Alexius made a secret pact with Saladin which means that he sided with the Muslims against fellow Christians. Alexius did not send troops to back up the crusaders when they were short on supplies and soldiers. Alexius encouraged and tolerated violence against Latin Christians living in Constantinople. Alexius completely abandoned the Crusaders in the holy land. (CONTINUED)
AegeanKing 1 year ago
@Palaiologos Alexius made a secret deal with Kilij Arslan when the Crusaders were fighting the Turks in Anatolia. In 1182 Alexius incited mobs to massacre Latin Christians including women and Children. Lastly, it was Alexios IV who promised to pay the crusaders so they could get to Egypt if they would just help him regain the throne of the Empire. Once Alexios was made Emperor, he refused to pay the crusaders and launched fireships against their remaining ships. (CONTINUED)
AegeanKing 1 year ago
@Palaiologos This left the Crusaders with out transportation, food or money and stranded on a hostile shore. This is why they attacked Constantinople. I am Greek and Orthodox, but I recognize the mistakes that the Emperors made and I dont try to blame everything on the Crusaders.

there is so little mentioned in history class about constantinople yet it was so important in world history.
most history books claim that islamic civilization was more advanced than western europe. what they fail to mention is that the byzantine civilization was always more advanced than the islamic civilization as well as the fact that the mass exodus from constantinople in 1453 greatly accellerated the renaissance in western europe.
islam contributed all but nothing to world knowledge.

Some people have to understand that saying ''Constantinople'' is only offensive in the minds of demented ultra nationalists. take care

Palaiologos 2 years ago
The wide scale use of cannons against a fortification such as that of Constantinople is probably the only significant military innovation the Ottomans implemented during the siege. The great walls of the Polis, 1,000 years old in 1453, were still those days the most sophisticated, complex and impressive fortification ever existed.

VictorLepanto 2 years ago
Sounds so Edward Gibbon!obsessive inward:byzantine political theory was trully global, their diplomacy is teached even our days in Political Sciences. Failed to build upon its heritage:arts thrived in a way that West could follow up only centuries later.Rigidity:dynamic evolution was the key of 1000 years of rule.Absolutism tyranny for a medieval empire while Russia had an absolut monarch till the late 19th century, Byzantium was the ark that preserved and enriched Greco-Roman tradition.
Palaiologos 2 years ago
Well, it wasn't for nothing that the word autocrator was invented for the Byzantine emperors. It is precisely this political reality that stifled the creativity of her subject people. They had to control everything & stranged life out of their society.
In what ways did the Byzantines build on the technological, economic, scientific & philosophical developements of the ancients? I'll grant the philosophical matter. I've been reading Jaroslav Pelikan re: the Capadocian saints.
VictorLepanto 2 years ago
Autocrator was not invented for Byzantine emperors, it's a title used in classical Greece also (i.e Alexander the Great was proclaimed Commander Autocrator of the Hellenes - Στρατηγός Αυτοκράτωρ). Economic the Byzantine empire instituted the solidus which was considered the most valuable and trusted currency for centuries both in East and West. Technological u have masterpieces of architecture, civil buildings&infrastructure.
Palaiologos 2 years ago
Philosophy I can mention Georgios Plithon Gemistos who is considered maybe the greatest mind of its time. I understand that you wanna compare classical antiquity with medieval times but i think you should always take under consideration what was situation in other states that time in Europe. The Byzantines never exprerienced the so called Black Ages as the West did. Sometimes we get carried away from our passion for classical antiquity and tend to ignore all the achievements of the Byzantines.
Palaiologos 2 years ago
And as far as i know and pls someone correct me if i'm wrong, the roman title imperator was replaced by the greek Basileas (Βασιλευς) the days of Heraclius&guess that autocrator was a translation of the roman imperator.Absolut monarchy or better despotism if we refer to later roman/early byzantine days, was a neccesity of its time as we didnt have city states or small kingdoms to rule but vast multiethnic empires. Even nowdays there're societies that are not ready to adapt democracy.
Palaiologos 2 years ago
To be far, The Pope excommunicated them,Also Many who joined the fourth crusade deserted when they found out that Constantinople was gonna be targeted after Zara.
Alexis IV treachery is not to be forgotten either, If not for him and his vile scheme to steal the throne, None of those brain dead mercenaries would have had the idea planted in their head.
This goes to show the dangers of Autocracy.

The Ottoman empire and the Byzantine , Share much in common for the manner which they declined and fell.
Obasiliasfilosofos 2 years ago
How so? The Byzantine Empire fell through sheer military pressure on all fronts and a stab in the back in the form of the fourth crusade.
The Ottoman Empire fell due to corruption, an inefficient economy and technological backwardness, a fall that lasted centuries.

Ennio444 3 years ago
Palaiologos 3 years ago

Justinh420 2 years ago 2
More like they called themselves '' Romans'' as being citizens of the Empire of Romans

The city was named Constantinople until the beginning of XXth Century, when the Turkish government, possibly Atatürk, changed its name to Instanbul, a name already used and more Turkish-like than Constantinople (even when Istanbul stands for Greek "Eis tin Polis", meaning "To the City").
So, please, don't speak from ignorance.

ITSKonstantinoupolis 3 years ago
The Byzantine Empire was DEFINITELY the Eastern Roman Empire, that said it also was undeniably Greek in culture, language and race. That part of the Roman Empire was always Greek speaking, Greek was the universal language during Roman times having been spread to a great portion of the world by Alexander the Great's army and influence. All THAT said, God bless Greece and may she reign over the Queen of cities once more and soon.

I agree, Constantinople should be liberated.
ITSKonstantinoupolis 3 years ago 2
the reason why we call it teh byzantine empire is taht historians look at the middle ages there is in fact two roman empires.
Bronxguyanese 3 years ago
most byzantine citizans concidered themselves rohmia the greek word for roman until the first collpase of constantinople in 1204. s After 1204 Byzantines started to call themselves greeks instead of romans because italians and french who are descendants of the romans conquered thier holy city constantinople. They also used the roman currency called the solidus or solidi. During late antiquity the Eastern Roman empire became more greek. Basilius was used instead of agustus or caeser.
Bronxguyanese 3 years ago
why the fuck would the vatican want people to believe that?

Byzantine Empire was the Eastern Roman Empire.
The name Byzantine did not come into existence untill the 18th century from English Historians. At the time of its existence, the Byzantines were calling themselves Romans and were fully aware of their Roman tradition. At the same time they were also aware of their Greek tradition and culture. It was a fusion of GrecoRoman civilization with the Greek element becoming more dominant in the later years.
erevos111 3 years ago
Actualy the name byzantine existed in ancient greece as constainoble was once known as byzantium an ancient greek city hence the name constainoble.

PedroAFC 3 years ago
Roman was more like a political term underlining the position held by the Byzantine state among other Christian states as lawful heirs of the Roman Empire. The Byzantines never named themselves Latins .. on the contrary they even despised this term especially after the sack of Constantinople in 1204. The so called Latin Empire of Constantinople existed only between 1204 and 1261 until Michael Paleologos recaptured the City from the Latins. The Empire was Greek from every other aspect.
Palaiologos 3 years ago
And once again ( know i said this quite a few times) we should not confuse the way we define modern ethnic states with medieval times. Thanks for commenting.
Palaiologos 3 years ago
Why do you give away the name Roman to the heretics and to the Germans who conquered and enslaved the Romans? The Roman Empire never changed its name into Byzantium. Roman came to mean Orthodox. Greeks were Romans. The leadership of the Roman Empire passed to the Greeks. The western historians named the Empire Byzantium in order to support the lie that the Roman Empire was the Frankish Empire of Charlemagne. The Greeks are Romans but not all the Romans are Greeks.

Palaiologos 3 years ago
byzantine empire wasnt never empire of greek. citizens of east roman empire caled themselves romamoi( roman citzen) east roman empire was multinational, not only greek.
kyroz2 3 years ago
Discussed this issue twice here ... thanks for commenting mate
Palaiologos 3 years ago
Mr kyroz2 I suggest you to read the facts more carefully. the true roman empire was destroyed by the ostrogoths in the 6th century AD. neither the Byzantine empire nor the Holy Roman are true successors of Rome. the official name of the byzantine empire was Vasilia Romeon, written "Βασιλεία Ρωμαίων", (i.e Imperium Romanorum).despite that fact all western europeans until 19th century and the formation of the Hellenic Republic used the terms "Imperium Graecorum", "Graecia", "Terra Graecorum"...
ImperatorGraecorum 3 years ago
my greek friend, I suppose that you are greek! I like greek and greek culture great respect to you, you did great for Europe, but the fact is that Byzantine empire never existed, there was roman empire, ROMAN STATE, do you understand,
kyroz2 3 years ago
and you greeks had a great influence to this state yes, but you were only the citizens, there was not the greeks state, the citizenship didnt call greek citizenship but Roman citizinship, and other see my video Byzantine empire, the describtion, there is explanations about this topic!
kyroz2 3 years ago
Palaiologos 3 years ago
Palaiologos 3 years ago
My friend Kyroz2, i am not accusing of any bad will or something but in my opinion you are making the same mistake like many others about this matter: you are confusing the way that we define modern states with medieval times. The ethnic definition of solid ethnic states and on ethnic basis in general was introduced much later (17-18th century). But even today prevailing ideology is the main parameter ie. the US .

And ... wanna say .. i really liked your video
Palaiologos 3 years ago
thanks friend, I really respect you, your video is full of emotions, i like it, great tribute to the great emperor! During the ancient Roman empire birth something beautiful, the culture of the ancient greeks was accepted and infuence all Romans, There will be none Seneca, Cicero, Vergilius, there all was insipirated by ancient greeks!
kyroz2 3 years ago
yes the greeks influence with their culture, literaterute, philosphy all world, at this time birth so call Greeco-roman civilization ancient civilization what we know here in the west from the rennesance time!
kyroz2 3 years ago
The greeks polis was died but the greek culture and greek nation lived! but no in Greek state but in the Roman state as the citiziens of the Roman empire then of Eastern Roman Empire, yes it was the multicultural empire, also Hungary was the multiculural empire, Ottoman empire was multiculural, but the state itself was ROMAN, none GREEK, they spoke greeks, yes but the state was roman not only by tradition it was unbroken continuance,
kyroz2 3 years ago
The byzantine emperors called themse Basileos thon Rhomaioi, Latin emperor of the Romans, The law was the roman no greeks, magisterial system was roman, the state simply was Roman, and they preserved so called Greco-Roman civilization no only Greeks civilization, thanks of Byzantine ( eastern ROman) emperor Iustinianus no greek empreror, now all Europe use the Roman civic law in their law and administrative system, even you greeks,
kyroz2 3 years ago
Even from the days of Emperor Constantine and the foundation of the new Capital in ancient Byzantium, the East was fully Hellenized. After the crisis of 3rd century, the Roman administative system collapsed. The transition from the Roman Hegemony(Principatus) to the total dominance of Imperial power (dominatus) introduced by Diocletian was followed by a new administrative system based on 2 branches :Central and Praefectures administation.
Palaiologos 3 years ago
This system was nothing like the one during Roman times. And moreover, from the Heraclius Dynasty it was replaced gradually by the Themata, a system that proved to be the backbone of Byzantine power. So, there is not true that the administative system was Roman. As for the language of law, I agree that the first centuries was Roman. But later it was replaced by Greek and gradually Roman was totally displaced in Byzantine law and administative system.
Palaiologos 3 years ago
Even from the reign of Justinian, even though most of the Corpus was in Roman(Codex, Digesta(Pandektis in Greek), Institutiones) the last part that included the new laws, the Novellae (Neares in Greek) was in Greek because the Latin language was not understood in the East. I can also mention the Eclogue and the Basilika. The Basilika, issued by Leo VI the Wise(late 9th century)was a revisal of the Corpus and was written in Greek along with new laws introduced by Leo and Basil I also in Greek.
Palaiologos 3 years ago
And I would like to mention Georg Ostrogorsky's words, sayin : "Even though Byzantium, for practical and theoretical reasons, insisted on the preservation of roman legacy, later on it was displaced by its original roman views" and "The evolution of the byzantine state was vividly dynamic with constant reformation so that when it reaches its end, the byzantine state has nothing in common with the roman imperium except the name and traditional claims which were not fullfiled"
